Something promising is happening in Indianola. Introducing the Indianola Promise Community. The Indianola Promise Community is a Delta Health Alliance initiative that unites health care, education, community and aith-based services to provide people the opportunity to realize their promise as active members and leaders in the Indianola community. Starting with prenatal care, through inancy, as toddlers, teens, students and high school graduates, IPC will ortiy the eorts o young Indianola residents as they tackle lie’s challenges. Here is a glimpse at the many efforts already underway this summer. Summer Camps This summer, over 600 children are enrolled in IPC summer camps throughout Indianola. Delta Missions operates one o those camps. It’s called The Character Development Summer Mentoring and teaches campers new character develop- ment traits (like positive attitude) each week, using the Head, Heart and Hands curriculum. At the Rasberry Men’s Club Summer Camp, called the Student Summer Development In itiative, campers ranging in age rom 13 - 18 years o age receive mentoring and continuing educ ation to improve their readiness or upcoming grade levels, or college and / or workorce development. As part o its Summer Outreach Program summer camp, the City o Indianola champions physical education with swimming lessons. The BB King Museum applies learning in art (perorming and visual arts) to the more practical aspects o living like nutrition, calling their camp “The Art of Living Smart.” At the Indianola Main Street camp, called Planting the Seeds for Careers  in Agriculture, teenagers tour area arms, restaurants, research acilities and more. The Color Me A Rainbow Big Read Program summer camp uses technology to kick-start reading skills in children age 3 – 5. The Care Delta Summer Youth Project teaches Middle Schoolers health and wellness. At its College Readiness and  Workfor ce Development Program, the Kepleré Institute o T echnology certies some teenagers in nursing and childcare while preparing others or college. T.E.E.N. (Targeting Exercise Energy Now) teaches Middle Schoolers how to incorporate exercise into their daily lives. The Small World Summer School brings a global variety o cultures to Indianola children, ranging in age rom 3 – 5 years old, using math, science, language arts, music and more.

Southgate Park PlaygroundAugust 7, next to Bethune Recreation Center Building, in what is now an open eld, 350 Indianola volunteers will builda playground designed by experts in play, Southgate’s children.

Starting at 8:30 AM, in six hours the playground will be complete,and its designers will be playing on it, thanks to the eorts o neighborhood residents, city leaders and KaBOOM!

IPC HQBy the Fall o 2010, in the newly reurbished IPC Headquartersoce in Indianola’s downtown business district on Front Street. Inthese oces, a new health clinic will oer residents greateraccess to health care, providing evaluation and treatment, as wellas screening or dental care, prenatal care, heart disease,

diabetes and other chronic conditions. The building will alsohouse IPC’s management, providing a place or residents to meetwith IPC managers to plan and evaluate IPC programs.

Building youngminds at thePromise SchoolThroughout thesummer, the PromiseSchool will bepreparing youngIndianola students or

kindergarten, underthe auspices o Mississippi State Universityand the Sunfower-Humphreys CountiesProgress, Inc. About 170 students enterthe Indianola Public School system eachyear. This all, over 100 students will spendthe summer preparing to make the most o their rst year in public school. Throughoutthe country, students with Pre-K schoolinghave achieved signicantly better peror-mance than those who have had none. This

approach has been underway in Indianolaor about a year and it’s starting to pay o.
