The decision followed a visit by the UCI (cycling’s governing body) inspectors who ruled that the venue simply wasn’t hilly enough and wouldn’t challenge the world’s best. While I welcome that decision as a victory for common sense, it was still one tinged with concern as apparently the inspectors were due back here as we went to press, with the express intention of finding another Essex venue to fill the void. As someone who’s ridden on just about every patch of green belt in the East London/Essex region over the last 30 years, I can only predict the search will prove fruitless. Especially as the UCI team has decreed a height difference of around 300 metres from the lowest to the highest point of the course is a minimum requirement, plus any venue must have seating capacity for 3,000 spectators. I put all these points to Peter King, chief exec of British Cycling. He said: “There’s always been an obvious conflict between the desire of the IOC and Locog to have as many events as possible within a few minutes of the main Olympic Village and the fact that there are no really good sites for world class mtb competition within that parameter. The choice of the Weald was based upon a plan to create a challenging circuit in terms of the terrain to make up for the lack of height variation but the UCI has finally decided that such a plan will not provide an acceptable course.” And of the plan for another Essex venue? King continued: “The time that it has taken to come to this conclusion and the extent to which Essex and Brentwood have, in the meantime, relied upon it in planning for the Olympic legacy phase has now brought a political dimension to the debate. That’s why the next stage is to scour the entire county of Essex to establish if there is another site which can be turned into a course worthy of the Olympic Games before, possibly, casting the net wider. We want the 2012 mtb event to go into the history books for all the right reasons and the course used must be the best it can reasonably be.” Obvious favourites Epping Forest and the Chilterns seem off the cards though; the former because of rights of way issues, and the latter because of distance. So for now the discussion continues and we’ll keep you updated. PS — Details of our 2008 reader holiday to the Alps have now been confirmed.
