Why use an Apple TV? Before looking at how you can use an Apple TV it is important to understand why you would want to use it and also the limitations within many schools and the difficulties with how networks are managed. The predominant reason for using an Apple is that it allows you the Teacher to use your iPad in the following ways: 1. Allow a presentation from the iPad from any point within your room 2. The iPad can been used for more than just presentations and also be used as a visualizer to show demos

and equipment that the whole classes will be able to see 3. Enable student to contribute directly from the iPad to the rest of the group 4. Use the camera to stream video showing exemplar work to the rest of the group……….. What are the down sides: It relies on the WiFi network being able to recognise both the iPad and the Apple TV at the same time. Unfortunately many networks are not able to use this due to security issues and connectivity. The only way around this involves no use of an internet connection and setting on your own localised WiFi network. This will not be connected to the internet but will allow you to use the iPad and your Projector to present to a much higher standard and enhance your teaching and learning. If you do also have and iPhone this also possible to do with an internet connection. The main issue will be that you will be paying for this connection with your mobile data.

Connection via Apple TV and WiFi What is an Apple TV: The apple TV is available from Apple and has a cost of around £99.00. It is connected to a TV or Projector Via the HDMI lead.

The most obvious way to connect the Apple TV is to use the HDMI cable from your TV or projector Once connected you will need access to some form of independent WiFi hub. This can be done with: • iPhone (4 onwards) • Old WiFi hub • Apple Airport Express Base station (£79.00) To Connect to the Apple TV you first need to set up a link to your

WiFi hub One connected use the iPad home button to double click to show the dialogue strip at the bottom of the screen. Swipe it to the Right to show the Airplay logo

Connecting the Apple TV to a VGA only Projector

One of the main issues connecting to a projector is that the AppleTV only has a HDMI Port. To enable you to connect to the projector you will need to purchase the appropriate adaptor. Their are several ways of doing this but the main way is to connect using the Kanex ATV Pro Airplay Mirroring For VGA Projector Cable £49.95.

This adaptor allows you to connect your VGA projector or monitor to the AppleTV. The adaptor will not require any external power. You will also be able to run any sound via the adaptor to run the sound via the rooms sound system
