KCSD 96 iPad Initiative Handbook

The goal of Kildeer Countryside School District 96 is to maximize the learning potential of all students in an effort to prepare them for a successful future as 21st century citizens. In an effort to do so, KCSD 96 is putting a 1:1 iPad initiative in place for all middle school, fourth and fifth grade students at KCSD 96. The iPads will follow the students through eighth grade.

The focus of the 1:1 iPad Initiative is to provide tools and resources to the 21st Century Learner. Excellence in education requires that technology be seamlessly integrated throughout the educational program. Increasing access to technology is essential for that future, and one of the learning tools of these 21st century students is the iPad. The individual use of iPads is a way to empower students to maximize their full potential and to prepare them for college and the workplace. According to studies and school reports, students who use a computing device in a 1:1 education environment are more organized and engaged learners, attend school more regularly, advance their knowledge and understanding of technology, and become constructors and designers of information and ideas. The iPad is a next generation device that makes learning more engaging and accessible. Learning results from the continuous dynamic interaction among students, educators, parents and the extended community. Technology immersion does not diminish the vital role of the teacher. To the contrary, it transforms the teacher from a director of learning to a facilitator of learning. Effective teaching and learning with iPads integrates technology into the curriculum any time, any place. KCSD 96 believes that the use of 1:1 devices will aid in developing independent, self-initiated learners; provide for collaboration and communication between students and teachers; and extend student learning beyond the classroom.

The policies, procedures, and guidelines outlined in this document apply to all iPads used at KCSD 96. Additional requirements are at the discretion of each classroom teacher.

1. MOBILE DEVICE SPECIFICATIONS

The mobile device selected for use is an Apple iPad (Wi-Fi only).

2. ISSUING OF IPADS

iPads will be distributed to students at the beginning of the school year provided the District received an electronic signature for the user agreement during registration from both parents and students. iPads will be returned during the final week of school or earlier so they can be checked for serviceability. If a student transfers out of KCSD 96 during the school year, the iPad must be returned at that time. If a student fails to return the iPad at the end of the school year or upon termination of enrollment at KCSD 96 he/she is subject to financial liability until the iPad is returned or the replacement cost of the iPad is received.

3. TAKING CARE OF THE IPAD

The student is responsible for the care of the iPad they have been issued by the school district. iPads that are broken or not working properly must be reported to a teacher and taken to the school Technology Lab or Learning Center for an evaluation of the equipment. A student

3

Page 4: iPad Policy Revision 16 2017-2018 - Amazon Web Services · • iPads must never be left unsupervised ANYWHERE, including unlocked lockers, vehicles, the cafeteria, gym, or anywhere

should never try to repair the iPad themselves, or have someone outside the district work on it, as this could void the warranty and cause the student to be without an iPad for an undetermined amount of time.

3.1 General Precautions:

• No food or drink is allowed near the iPad.• Charger cords/cables/ear buds must be inserted into and removed from the iPad carefully to

prevent damage.• iPads must remain free of any writing, drawing, etching, stickers, or labels that are not the

property of KCSD 96.• iPads must never be left unsupervised ANYWHERE, including unlocked lockers, vehicles,

the cafeteria, gym, or anywhere on the school grounds.• Students are responsible for keeping iPad batteries charged daily for school use.• Students must honor and abide by all KCSD 96 policies, rules and guidelines.• Do not put the iPad on top of a stack of books or papers as it can slide off and be damaged.

3.2 Carrying the iPad:

The protective KCSD 96 issued case provides the iPad with sufficient padding to protect it from normal treatment and provide a suitable means for carrying the device within the school, and to home and back each day.

The guidelines below should be followed:• NEVER remove the protective KCSD 96 issued iPad case. Only KCSD 96 cases are allowed

on the school-issued iPads.• iPads should be placed carefully inside backpacks when carried to and from school. iPads

should not be placed under or between books; this puts too much pressure and weight on the iPad screen.

3.3 Screen Care:

While made of durable glass, iPad screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure and impact on the display. Please adhere to the following rules:• Do not lean on top of the iPad.• Do not place anything on or beside the iPad that could put pressure on the screen.• Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth only. Do not use liquid of any type

(including Windex) to clean the screen.• Do not “bump” the iPad against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc., as it can damage the

screen.• Use caution: iPad screens can be scratched by rough or sharp objects like keys and rocks.

3.4 iPad Identification:

• Each school owned iPad is labeled in the manner specified by the school. Labels are NOT to be intentionally removed from the iPads. iPads can be identified in the following ways:

• Serial number• KCSD 96 Label

3.5 Storing your iPad:

• When students are not using iPads, the devices should be stored in a locked room, secure locker, teacher’s locked classroom, or in a secure, designated location at home or school.

• iPads should never be left in a vehicle (locked or not). Not only can temperature changes cause damage, cars are also popular targets for thieves.

3.6 iPads Left in Unsupervised Locations:

• Under no circumstances should iPads be left in unsupervised areas.• Unsupervised areas include the school building and grounds, cafeteria, hallways, Learning

Center, gym, dressing rooms, Technology labs, restrooms, or any unlocked classroom. • Any iPad left unattended is in danger of being stolen. If an iPad is found in an unsupervised

area, it must be taken to the Learning Center, Technology Lab or school office. The responsible student may be subject to disciplinary action.

4. USING THE IPAD AT SCHOOL

iPads are intended to be used at school each day. Free wireless access is provided by KCSD 96 while on District property. In addition to teacher expectations for iPad use, access to the district website including school messages, announcements, calendars and schedules through the browser is available. The student is responsible for bringing his or her iPad to all classes and making sure the iPad is charged at home on a daily basis. The student will use his or her iPad device in class only when so instructed by his or her teacher. iPads are not allowed to be used in the locker rooms or restrooms. Do not loan iPads or accessories to others. Do not borrow an iPad from another student. Do not share passwords, login information or usernames with others. Do not access another person’s iPad without their consent.

4.1 iPads Left at Home:

• If the student leaves his or her iPad at home, he or she is responsible for getting his or her coursework completed by alternate means.

• The iPad is similar to any instructional material necessary for daily classwork. • If leaving the iPad at home is a frequent occurrence, the student may be subject to

disciplinary action.

4.2 iPads Undergoing Repair:

• Based on availability and determined by individual circumstance, loaner iPads may be issued during the time frame of the repair.

• In the case that no loan is available, the student will be required to complete assignments by alternative methods.

4.3 Screen-savers and Backgrounds:

• During orientation, students will set their backgrounds as a self-portrait for quick iPad identification purposes throughout the entire school year.

• Sound must be muted at all times during school unless permission is obtained from the teacher.

5. MANAGING FILES AND SAVING WORK

Every student should save work to either a district server, Schoology account, Dropbox or Google Drive from his or her iPad. The student may also e-mail documents to themselves. Storage space will be available on the iPad – BUT it will NOT be backed up by the District in case of re-imaging. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion.

• The school district cooperates fully with local, state, or federal officials in any investigation concerning or relating to violations of laws.

10. REPAIRING OR REPLACING YOUR IPAD

10.1 Apple Warranty:

• Apple warrants the iPads from defects in materials and workmanship. This limited warranty covers normal use, mechanical breakdown, or faulty construction and will provide replacement parts necessary to repair the iPad or replace it.

• The Apple warranty does not warrant against damage caused by misuse, abuse, accidents, or device viruses. If this happens, the iPad must be sent off for repair by the KCSD 96 Technology Department.

• If iPad misuse and abuse becomes a habitual problem, an administrative decision will be made regarding the student’s further take-home privileges.

10.2 Insurance Coverage:

• The annual technology fee paid as part of registration will pay for the initial iPad case, apps, and self-insurance for the school-issued iPad for repair and replacement in the event of theft, loss or accidental damage.

• All repair/replacement claims must be reported to the homeroom teacher as soon as possible so that the iPad can be repaired by the KCSD 96 Technology Department.

• This plan does not cover the loss or damage of the case, charger and USB charging cable. It also does not cover intentional damage to the iPad itself. Students and parents may be responsible for repair and/or replacement of an intentionally damaged iPad, case, charger or USB charging cable.

10.3 Reporting Theft or Vandalism:

• In the event of fire, acts of god, theft or vandalism, the student and his or her parents must report the incident immediately to the homeroom teacher and principal who will notify the KCSD 96 Technology Department. If procedures fail to locate a presumed stolen device on district property, it is mandatory that a police report immediately be filed by the parents and student and a copy of the report be provided to the Principal.

• A student making a false report will also be subject to school disciplinary action. • The District may work with law enforcement agencies to be aware of this district-owned

equipment.

10.4 Loss/Replacement of iPads:

• If a student loses or destroys the school-issued iPad, an administrative decision will determine whether the student will be issued a loaner iPad (if available), whether home privileges will be continued or denied, or whether the student must complete assignments using alternative methods for the rest of the school year without an iPad.

11. IPAD TECHNICAL SUPPORT

The KCSD 96 Technology Department coordinates all aspects of technical support for the iPad.
