Overview

Dollars & Cents is a great way to practice basic money skills. The three programs in this collectionrange in difficulty from identifying coins to calculating change.

• Counting Coins is a coins-only program with four activities: identifying coins, sorting, matching,and purchasing items from a vending machine.• In Spending Money, users experience a shopping trip to a mall, finding items on a list andselecting bills and coins to make each purchase.• Making Change is the most challenging of the three programs. Users play the role of storecashier, entering the cash given and then selecting the correct amount of change to return.

The many adjustable settings in Dollars & Cents are designed to help a variety of individuals usethe program successfully. Settings include the number of items shown, which coins and bills areused, whether auditory prompts are included on button rollovers, and a choice between US orCanadian currency. Attainment also builds-in scanning for switch users. See Options-Settings.

Log In

Dollars & Cents will automatically log in users as Guest until one or more user login accounts havebeen created. Results are saved when logged in with a user account. Results are not saved whenlogged in as Guest. Once accounts are created, the program will open to the Login window. Selecta name from the pull-down list and click OK. To add user logins, adjust user settings, or view userresults, go to Options by clicking the gear icon in the upper right corner of the opening screen.

Counting Coins

Counting Coins focuses on identifying coins, determining individual value, and combining values.Select an activity to begin.

Name Activity

Name ActivityA set of coins is displayed on a black tray. Click on a coin to display the coin’s name(s), value, anda larger, detailed image. Click on the large coin to see the reverse side of the coin. Select the Exitbutton to leave the Name activity. Results are not stored for this activity because of itsexploratory nature.



Sort Activity

Sort ActivityTwo types of coins and two tubes are presented. Drag each coin into the tube labeled with thecorresponding value. The value of each coin put into the correct tube is added, and this total isshown below each tube.



When all the coins have been put into their tubes, a mathematical equation shows the sum of thecoins. A forward arrow button will appear during the animation sequence of the equation. To skipviewing the animated equation, click the forward arrow to proceed to the next problem. The Sortactivity becomes progressively more difficult after five consecutively correct answers. Resultsfrom this activity are saved for users logged into their account.



Match Activity

Match ActivityCoins are displayed in the center of the screen, and coin receptacles labeled with coin values arepresented in each corner. Drag the coin set to the matching coin receptacle. The type of coins andcoin receptacles displayed can be selected in Options-Settings. Choose from four types of coinreceptacles: Box, Pig, Purse, or Bank. Results from this activity are saved for users logged intotheir account.



Vending Activity

Vending ActivityThis activity simulates buying products from a vending machine. An item is shown behind thesliding door. The price is displayed to the right of the coin slot. Deposit coins by dragging them tothe coin slot. The sum of the coins deposited is displayed to the left of the coin slot. Continue todeposit coins until the specified price is reached. Exact change is needed to purchase items. If acoin is added that exceeds the targeted price, the machine will reject it. Once the price ismatched, the glass door slides open revealing the purchased item. Press the forward arrow topurchase another item. Choosing a difficulty level in Settings helps challenge all users. Resultsfrom this activity are saved for users logged into their account.

Spending Money

Spending Money provides practice in selecting appropriate bills and coins to reach a given total.Choose Shop to select items and pay for them, Quiz to only pay for purchases (Quiz results aretracked), or Exit to leave Spending Money.

Shop

ShopThe Shop activity opens in one of eight stores in a mall. A shopping list is posted on the right sideof the screen. Each store displays five random items for sale. Multiple items may be selected andpurchased from a store. Some words on the list refer to a specific item found in the store. Others,like“clothes,” “shoes,” or “snack,” are general descriptions for which various items are acceptable. Ashopping trip always starts with enough money in the wallet to complete the list unless too manyextra items are purchased.

Tip: Settings can restrict purchases to listed items only or allow buying additional items.Encourage bargain shopping by finding the least expensive item fitting the description so moneymay be left over to buy additional items.

Travel from store to store using the Left and Right arrow buttons. When a store displays an itemon the shopping list, click on the item to select it for purchase. A price tag will pop up behind theselected item, showing its price and description. Click on the selected item again to put it backwithout purchasing. The price tag at the top of the screen shows a running total of items selectedin the store. The wallet indicates the amount of money available.



To purchase the selected items, press PAY. The checkout screen displays the money from thewallet on the left side of the screen. The amount owed shows on the cash register. Click on billsor coins to select them for payment. The current amount of money selected is displayed at thetop of the screen. Continue to select money until the amount matches or exceeds the amountshown on the cash register. Press UNDO to return the last coin or bill selected. Press PAY to givethe money to the cashier. A prompt will appear if the amount given is not enough. If the amountpaid exceeds the total price, the change is returned. Once successfully paid for, the items arechecked off the list and shopping resumes. Continue shopping until all items on the list havebeen checked off. Results from Shop are not saved in Results. Results from Quiz are saved forusers logged in.



Quiz

QuizThe Quiz activity is the checkout component of shopping. Available money is displayed on the leftside of the screen. Select bills and coins until the amount matches or exceeds the amount shownon the cash register. When ready, press PAY. Once you have successfully paid the correct amount,the programpresents a new price tag and set of money. In Settings you may choose an option that requiresshoppers to select exact change. Results from Quiz are saved for users logged in (see Results).

Making Change

Making Change teaches applied money skills by simulating a cash register to collect payment andmake change.

Start - Cashier

StartMaking Change is a two-step process of entering the cash given and then selecting the change toreturn. A purchase price is randomly generated and shown on the Total cash register panel. Thecoins and bills tendered are shown, and an audible prompt is given to “Count the money andenter it.” To hear each money value, click on individual coins or bills. Tally the amount of moneyshown and enter that amount on the keypad. To hear the amount entered or the total purchaseprice, click on the corresponding display panel. The amount entered appears in the amounttendered display panel on the cash register. Press UNDO to clear the last number entered. Note:You must always enter the cents even if no coins are presented. However, you do not need toenter decimal points.



When ready to continue, press the ENTER key. If the amount entered is correct, the moneydrawer opens to make change. The cash register opens and prompts to “Give the customer theirchange.” The dollar amount to return to the customer appears in the Change Back display panel.Click on the coins or bills in the cash drawer to select them. The money selected will move to theright side of the screen while the cash register displays a running total. UNDO returns the last coinor bill to the cash drawer. To hear the current amount selected or the total change to return, clickthe display panel. Give the customer their change by clicking ENTER. If the amount of changeselected is correct, another transaction begins.



Quiz

Quiz is the Change Back portion of Making Change. Quiz will track users’ scores.

Options - Settings

Choose Dollars & Cents Options to add users’ names (so their results will be saved), personalizeadjustable settings, set scanning details, and view and print user results.General Options Open Options by clicking the gear icon in the upper right corner of program title pages (alsoavailable on the Log in window.) At the top of the general options screen are buttons to Deleteand Add user names. • Delete a user account by selecting the user name from the drop-down list of names andpressing Delete.• Create a user account by pressing Add, typing the user’s name, and pressing Next. An optionalpicture of the user can be added that will be displayed by the user’s name on the login menu.Cancel will skip adding the photo. Snapshot will take the photo shown in the preview window.Finish will use the photo with the user's name.• Store connects to iTunes store for an in-app purchase of Unlimited Users for Dollars & Cents.Without the in-app purchase, two user accounts can be created and saved. (The two users andGuest have unlimited use of this program.)• Allow Guest Logins, when OFF will remove Guest as a login option. When a user is logged in asGuest, results are not saved. Guest can be removed as a login choice only after one or more loginnames have been added.• Auto Login (when only 1 user exists) will automatically log in the user so the log in window will



not be seen. This is available when only one user account has been created.

SettingsSettings are located in the Options, press Settings button.There are five tabs with adjustable settings.

Program Settings tab• Country: Select United States or Canadian currency.• Quiz Problems: Select the number of problems given while in Quiz mode.• Currency: Individual bills and coins that will be used in the activities.



CC-Counting Coins tab• Enable Counting Coins: Turn off to remove the program button from the title page so CountingCoins will not be accessible to this account.• Only show primary sides of coins: Coins will not be flipped or rotated except in Name activity.• Match Container: Select Bank, Box, Pig, or Purse as the container shown in Match activity.Vending Activity: • Select difficulty level of the Vending activity.

Simple only the exact coins needed to make the purchase are offered.Normal offers a variety of coins including extra coins. Purchases are scored by reaching

the total needed, not what coins were used.Advanced offers a variety of coins including extra coins. Purchases are scored by the coins

selected.



SM-Spending Money tab• Enable Spending Money: Turn off to remove the program button from the title page so SpendingMoney will not be accessible to this account.• List Only: Turned on restricts the purchases to items only on the shopping list.• Choose how many items are displayed on the shopping list and the maximum amount of moneyavailable.Quiz Mode• Exact amount: Select to require exact change for purchases.• $20 or less: Select to limit the dollar amount of purchases.• Stores: The number of stores in the mall can be limited.



MC-Making Change tab• Enable Making Change: Turn off to remove the program button from the title page so MakingChange will not be accessible to this account.• Keypad -Reverse order: Turn on to display the keypad buttons arranged in ascending order fromtop to bottom (like a telephone).• Change Back-Calculate own change: Increases the difficulty level by not showing the amount tobe returned. The amount of the purchase and the amount tendered will be shown; the studentmust do the math to calculate the amount of change.



System tabAlternative Access: Built-in scanning provides program access with switches. To use scanning,select one or two switch; by default scanning is disabled. Auditory Rollover: Slide and pause over items to hear auditory confirmation.Show Touches: Adds a visual confirmation of activating touches. Sound: Sound components can be turned off.Icon: Select Set to take a picture that will show by the user's name on the Log in window.

Results

Results from activity in Dollars & Cents is saved when students are logged into their account thathas been created. (See Options-Add) To view saved Results open Options then select Resultsbutton.Results are not saved while logged in as Guest.

To view details highlight an entry and press View.
