Normal prostate

Benign prostate glands are lined by two cell layers, simple columnar epithelium lined glands resting on a cuboidal cell layer. The glands are scattered in a fibromuscular stroma. Concretions called corpora amylacea (rice bodies) are often seen in benign prostate glands.

Adenocarcinoma of Prostate

Malignant prostate glands lose the two cell layer architecture. They glands are lined by single cell layer. The cells have prominent nucleoli and crystalloid structures may be seen in the lumen. Special stains (like Keratin 903) to identify the basal cuboidal cells are utilized to document the absence of two cell layers.

Gleason score

Gleason’s scoring method identifying specific pattern of tumor architecture is used in determining the grade of prostate cancer. The higher the grade the worse prognosis.
