The first thing I want to do is express a big THANK YOU to Marcia and her luncheon and rally hosts for a very suc- cessful 2015-16 year. Our unit membership increased and our luncheons and rallies took many of us to new places. It was a GREAT year! Now, we are looking ahead to the 2016-17 year. As you can tell by the Luncheon and Rally schedule included later in this newsletter, I tried to get the unit to some new places, hoping you will find them interesting enough that you will make plans to attend as many of the functions as possible. The four rallies are set up to take advantage of local celebrations that I hope you will find interesting and enjoyable. I want to express my deepest THANK YOU to those who agreed to host a luncheon or rally. Without your help, nothing would happen. The first Iowa Luncheon will be hosted by Gene and Carolyn Haller on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Hwy. 63 Diner, 3030 Marnie Dr. in Wa- terloo, IA. The luncheon time is 11:30 AM and Gene and Carolyn would like to see as many unit members as possible. In order to know who is coming and so they don’t start eating before all arrive, you should contact Carolyn at 319-230-0020 or by email at [email protected]. MEMBERS WELCOMED AT ALLISON RALLY Our newest Iowa Unit members are Doug and Deb Ford, who reside at 105 Rustic Lake Dr. in Colena, IL. They are retired and have been married for 43 years. They are the parents of two daughters with three grand- daughters and one grandson. Before retiring, Deb was the Ac- counting Director for the Orient, IL School District where she was responsible for all the district’s financial and budget activi- ties. Doug worked in John Deere’s combine production facility in E. Moline, IL. Deb is a native Iowan, having graduated from Wapello High School. Doug is a native Illinoian. Deb says her hobbies are reading and counted cross-stitching, while Doug enjoys camping and woodworking, although he hasn’t been active in the latter for some time. Although Norman “Norm” and Pat Van Klompenburg have been Iowa Unit members since 2014, they were able to attend their first Iowa Unit rally in August at Kalona, IA. Norm retired from a lifetime of work in mental health administration. Pat worked as an Office Manager/Secretary in both the South Dakota and Iowa state governments. The couple live at 1012 S. 13 th Ave. W., Newton, IA. They are the parents of two sons with three granddaugh- ters. Pat claims bridge and cooking and baking as her hobbies, while Norm enjoys astronomy, photography and woodworking as his past-times. Norm said he saw an Airstream trailer when he was still going to school and always dreamed of having one. Finally, his dream came true. The Iowa Unit welcomes these two couples into the unit and hope to see them at our future luncheons and rallies.

SMALL TOWN—BEAUTIFUL RALLY SITE The joint Iowa-North Iowa Rally at Allison, IA on October 6

th thru

9th

started off with a forecast of rain, which did occur during Thursday night. However, by the time everyone arose on Friday

morning, the skies had cleared and the temperatures had dropped into the low 40's. Following a deli-cious breakfast prepared and served by Iowa Unit members Don and Sue Storjohann and Carol Heckman, it was off to visit “Retrieving Freedom”. This re-markable business, started in 2012 has two facilities (Waverly, IA and Senatobia, MS) where dogs are trained and matched with veter-ans suffering from PTSD and also with youth and adults suffering from autism. The building at Wav-

erly just opened in June of this year. The Iowa Co-President, Scott Dewey, and a female employee explained the process, from an obtaining an 8-week old puppy to final placement as a trained dog at 2 years of age. The cost of a trained dog runs from $15,000 to $17,000, with the client expected to pay $5,800. The opera-tion exists on donations, grants from businesses and individuals and from fund raising efforts. No government money is used. This extremely worth-while operation was a very interesting

and informative stop.

Following lunch at the East Bremer Cafe in Waverly, it was on to Greene, IA where the group visited American Tool & Engineering.

THIS MONTH’S RECIPE In response to your newsletter team’s plea in the August newsletter, Sharon Urich was good enough to send us her muffin recipe. They sure sound like delicious eating!

Easy Blue Berry Muffins 1 ½ cups flour 1 egg 3/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup oil ½ tsp salt 1 ½ tsp vanilla 2 tsp baking powder 1 cup blueberries Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Use 10 paper cupcake liners and a muffin baking pan. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. In a 1-cup measuring cup, mix the beaten egg, oil and vanilla. After mixing the last 3 ingredients, add milk to make one cup. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently. If using frozen blue berries, place about 1 tsp. of flour in a bowl and add 1 cup of blue berries. Mix to coat, stir into batter and spoon into cup cake liners. If using fresh blue berries, just add them to the batter, without coating. Let filled liners, in pan, rest on counter for 10 min-utes; sprinkle with raw or coarse sugar on top and bake for 17-20 minutes. Nutrition Info per muffin: 205 calories, 30 gms carbs, 8 gms fat, 21 mg choles-terol A big THANK YOU goes to Sharon for helping us. Next month, we will have Sue Storjohann’s Pumpkin Nut Bread which we all enjoyed at the October rally Now we just need more of you to send us more recipes.

PLANNING FOR 2017 REGION 8 RALLY Region 8 President and First Lady, Gary and Linda Rush, are in the process of distributing rally re-sponsibilities for the 2017 Region 8 Rally to be held in Osceola, IA next April 27-30. The rally theme is in keeping with the 50

th anniversary of

Region 8. Attendees are asked to come with 50's clothing to fit in with the occasion - bobby socks, saddle shoes, white bucks, big flare skirts, levis, etc.. The Iowa Unit was asked to take care of four duties at the rally. These were Parking, a Wednesday evening Soup Supper, a Breakfast and a Day Tour to Des Moines. Chairpersons have been secured for each of these responsibili-ties and your President sincerely thanks those who agreed to fill these positions. Parking (the Iowa Unit’s responsibility as host unit) will be co-chaired by Paul Ryan and Chuck Helle. The Wednesday Soup Supper will be chaired by Nancy Helle, the Oatmeal and Ice Cream Break-fast will be chaired by Marcia Woolley and Scott and Kathy Allen have agreed to handle the Day Tour to Des Moines. Your president, as well as your Region 8 President, say THANK YOU to those who agreed to serve. All of these mem-bers will need help, so when the 2017 Region 8 Rally comes up next April, plan to attend and help with one, or more, of our unit responsibili-ties. Many hands make light work!

A newly married man asked his wife, “Would you have married me if my father hadn’t left me a fortune?” “Honey,” the woman replied sweetly, “I’d have married you no matter who left you a fortune.”

This family-owned business fabricates molds (mostly from aluminum) for numer-ous companies to use in pro-ducing their products. Large blocks of aluminum are shaved, drilled and shaped to make the molds. For one of their orders, a block of aluminum weighing 11,000 lbs. was cut down to only 5,700 lbs. by the time it left the plant. The variety of molds they have been paid to make are countless and a few of the products made in molds they produced were on display. Following a “dinner on your own” evening meal, rally attendees gathered at the park lodge for an evening of “robber bingo”. There were several surprisingly nice white elephant items won, although there were also several that resulted in hearty laughs and red faces when opened. One was a Playboy jigsaw puzzle won by Ted Holman and another, won by Carol Heckman, was a miniature toilet that made flushing sounds when the handle was pulled. Everyone headed back to their Air-streams with a happy and fun evening behind them.

A cool, but sunny, morning greeted rally attendees when they awoke on Saturday morning. For those who desired a hearty breakfast, the local Lions Club prepared and served omelets for $5.00 as part of a local 3-mile race venue. Numerous WBCCI members availed themselves of a good breakfast to start the day. Then, they were free to do their own thing. Some went to Trains on the Farm, others visited the Little Brown Church and others just took the opportunity to relax and visit. Climbing to the top of the “mountain” and relaxing on a bench was popular. The Iowa Unit held a business meeting at 5:00 PM to pay bills, ap-prove the secretary and treasurer reports and take care of other

business. A catered supper was en-joyed by all before Dwight Olson, Region 8 2

nd Vice

Presi-dent, installed the Iowa and North Iowa Unit officers for 2016-17. Cake and ice cream were served at the New Officer Reception before everyone retired to their rigs for the night.

The pastry and fruit breakfast on Sunday morning was served by members of the North Iowa Unit, before everyone pitched in and returned the Lodge at Wilder to it’s original (or cleaner) condition prior to heading for home. North Iowa member Fred Marcalus and Don and Sue Storjohann and John and Carol Heckman of the Iowa Unit deserve congratulations and a big THANK YOU for hosting a great rally to end our 2016 rally year.

SWISS FESTIVAL RALLY Three Iowa Unit couples were in attendance at the 54

th Annual

Swiss Festival Rally in Sugarcreek, OH from September 24th

to October 2

nd. They were Paul and June Ryan, John and Carol

Heckman and Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka. For the Ryans and Heckmans, it was their first time at Sugarcreek. True to tradition though, when the Airstreams showed up, so did the rain. Al-though the area had been having a very dry period, things got wet in a hurry. It rained on five days during the rally, but the

tours of schools and businesses in the area were still well attended and the rain did not dampen the fun.

As is normal with the rally tours, four new stops replaced four old stops on the tours this year. One was a Amish casket maker (a younger man took over when the previous maker retired), an Amish dry goods store, a broom-making busi-ness and a Coleman Museum owned and operated by an Amish gentleman. Two Amish schools, in session, were still on the tour schedule and were big hits, as usual. At

the Coleman Museum, one could see unbelievable displays of prod-ucts Coleman made, or still makes, from lamps to coolers to cooking ranges and much more. Doris Jean even found the range model she learned to cook on, oh, so many years ago.

Keim Lumber in Charm, OH is much, much more than a lumberyard. In a town of 69 population, they employ over 400 people and sell every-thing from lumber and wooden slabs to hardware, appliances and finished furni-

ture. Also, no trip to Sugar-creek would be complete with-out making a visit to Lehman Hardware in Kidron, about 20 miles north. This “everything” store (from toys to kitchen appliances, fudge to hard-ware) also has a fantastic dis-

play of relief carvings. Paul Weaver, an Amish gentleman, has created more than 20 wooden carvings; all in 3-D relief. It takes an average of three months per carving and he has been doing this in his free time for more than 20 years. You have to see it to believe the intricate work he has done.

The only meal prepared and served at the rally is the traditional ham and bean soup supper on Thursday; the “Amish in the Park” day. Two hundred pounds of beans and five “biggest you have” hams were cooked, outdoors, in five cast iron kettles over wood fires. The weather did not co-operate this year and the cooking had to be done with the cooks under umbrellas and wood covers over the bean pots. Larry Kurkowski and his crew still got the job done and everyone enjoyed all the ham and bean soup they wanted. All were encouraged to come back and take as much soup with them as they wanted for meals down the road. Free buggy rides, cooked-on-site apple butter, putt-putt ice cream and a horse-shoeing demonstra-tion were also available. Mothers of children attending the two schools that were on tours spent hours baking and brought pies, cakes, cookies and bread to sell to help support the schools. They were well received and their baked goods were delicious. Their corn-bread went especially well with the ham and beans. Yumm!

The evening entertainment throughout the rally was excellent, with the Cambridge City Band, Crystal Gage (you would remember her as the young female singer at Lewisberg who loved to rub men’s bald heads), Dave and Daphne and Popular Demand (a men’s barbershop quartet). Door prize drawings each evening, along with cookies and hot chocolate made for a great rally.

Contrary to rumor, the Swiss Festival Rally WILL BE HELD in 2017. Members of the sponsoring unit (Lake of Lakes, Ohio) are getting older and fewer in number, so there has been talk of dropping the rally. Larry and Karin Kurkowski, Rally Co-Chairs, emphati-cally stated “there will be a rally next year”. They are among a group of WBCCI members investigating ways to keep the rally going. Chuck and Doris Jean (although they have been to Sugar-creek at least four times) are again considering organizing and leading an Iowa Unit caravan to Sugarcreek next year, so keep your eyes and ears open for further details. If you have never gone (or have been there and want to go back) keep the last ten days of September, 2017 open. We’ll see what happens.

PLEASE AND THANK YOU As your newsletter team has done in the past, we are renewing our request for recipes, articles and pictures to include in future Iowa Unit newsletters. We are all family and, as such, are interested in where our family members go and what they do. We realize that winter is upon us and traveling is limited, but we’re sure not all of you stay home all the time. So, help us out!

TIME TO MAKE PLANS FOR OUR MAY TULIP TIME RALLY Although it is still several months until the Iowa Unit holds our first 2017 rally, it would be wise to make reservations for a camping site now. The rally will be at Roberts Creek East Campground on County Road G-28, about 4.5 miles west of Pella, IA. This is a Marion County Park and reservations can be made a year in advance, so they can be made anytime. The rally dates are May 4 to 7,

2017, in conjunction with Pella Tulip Time. This is the weekend following the Region 8 Rally at Osceola and will be the first weekend in May, rather than our usual second weekend. Tom and Shirley Herron, our rally hosts, have reserved Space 2 and Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka have reserved Space 3. Because the rally will involve Tulip Time, there will probably be a pretty high demand for camp-ing sites, so getting one reserved as soon as possible is a very good idea. The cost is $16.00 per night with 30 amp electricity. Water is available, although not for direct hookup. Water tanks can be filled and there is a dump station. A map of Roberts Creek East is shown below so you can see the camping sites and instructions for making a reservation are also listed. Sites 1 thru 29 are reserv-able, while Sites 30 thru 50 are first come - first serve. Making a reservation is somewhat complicated, but just stick with it. If your reservation includes a Friday, you must also include and pay for Saturday. That should be no problem since our rally will run from Thursday to Sunday morning. Once you have made a reservation, please drop Tom and Shirley a note so they will know how many to plan for.
