Kevin Dresser, the 2016 National Wres-tling Coaches’ Association Coach of the Year, enters his second season as the Iowa State head wrestling coach.

In his fi rst season at Iowa State, Dresser took a team that won just one dual in 2016-17 and led them to an 8-10 dual mark. At 149 pounds, Jarrett Degen qualifi ed for the national tournament and wrestled to the round of 12 before being eliminated.

Iowa State Athletics Director Jamie Pollard aimed high during the search with the goal of returning the Cyclone wrestling program to national prominence. Pollard believes Dresser’s championship pedigree as an athlete and coach will be a natural draw to recruits as well as an inspiration to the wrestlers on the current roster.

Dresser compiled a 160-51 dual record at Tech and won ACC dual meet titles in 2015-2016-2017 and league tournament championships in 2013 and 2014 (this year’s ACC tournament is March 4). He has coached 65 NCAA Championship qualifi ers, 20 All-Americans and fi ve ACC Most Outstanding Wrestlers. Dresser was named ACC Coach of the Year the last four years in a row and the state of Virginia’s coach of the year fi ve times.

Much of the Hokies’ success can be traced to Dresser and his staff ’s recruiting acumen. Six of his classes have ranked among the Top 11 nationally, including the 2013 group that was No. 2 according to InterMat.

Dresser was named Virginia Tech’s coach in 2006-07 after a legendary high school coaching career in Virginia. He led Chris-tiansburg High School (1996-2006) to fi ve state championships and three runner-up fi nishes in 10 seasons. Before that, he took Grundy High School (1988-96) to eight state titles in as many years. Dresser coached 69 state champions and four of his teams ranked in the Top 10 nationally.

As a competitor, he won two state titles and compiled a 112-11-1 record at Humboldt (Iowa) High School before a distinguished collegiate career at Iowa. The two-time All-American and two-time Big Ten champion won the 1986 NCAA Championship (when he won the Mike Howard Award as Iowa’s MVW) and placed fourth at the national meet in 1985. The Hawkeyes won national titles in each of his fi ve seasons on the roster.

Dresser has been inducted into the Iowa School Athletic Asso-ciation Wrestling Hall of Fame (2009), the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame (2014) and the Roanoke Valley Wrestling Hall of Fame (2015). He was also presented a Lifetime Service Award by the Virginia chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2013.

Dresser earned a B.S. degree in general studies from Iowa in 1986. He and his wife, Penny, have three children: Emma, Anna and Jack.

IOWA STATE WRESTLING IS HOMEGROWN AND YOUNG• Iowa State’s roster contains 42 wrestlers. Of those 42, 30 were recruited out of the state of Iowa.

• The Cyclones brought in 19 newcomers this season. 13 of those new faces are from the state of Iowa.

• Although loaded with in-state talent, the Cyclones have the rest of the map covered as well. The states of Ohio (2), Montana (2), Georgia (1), Hawaii (1), Kansas (1), Michigan (1), Texas (1), Minnesota (1), Oregon (1) and Illinois (1) are also represented on this ISU roster.

• The youth of Iowa State can’t go unnoticed. The lineup consists of 32 underclassmen and just 10 upperclassmen. 24 of the 32 underclassmen are freshmen or redshirt freshmen.

A FRESH START• Iowa State received a trio of transfers that will have an imediate impact this season. Alex Mackall, Willie Miklus and

Ethan Andersen all have joined the team in 2018-19.

• Mackall transfered to Iowa State last season at the semester by way of Rutgers. He wrestled in one open for the Cyclones and went 4-0. Coming out of high schoo. Mackall was the no. 71 overall recruit in his class and was a two-time Ohio State wrestling fi nalist. He was a 2015 high school All-American.

• Miklus brings with him to Ames loads of experience. Originally a top prep from Southeast Polk high school in Altoona, Iowa, Miklus went to Missouri where he was a three-time All-American for head coach Brian Smith. Miklus has been plagued by injuries throughout his career and was awarded a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Miklus is a much needed dash of experience in a lineup that features a lot of youth.

• Miklus enters his senior season with a career record of 78-23 and a dual mark of 43-7.

• Andersen is also a product of prep powerhouse Southeast Polk. He spent his fi rst two collegiate season at Oklahoma State. He wrestled in a handful of opens, but never cracked John Smith’s lineup. He wrestled to a 15-5 record as a redshirt freshman.

REMOVE THE REDSHIRTS• Iowa State’s class of 2017 was packed with talent with guys like Austin Gomez, Ryan Leisure and Marcus Coleman

sitting out their initial seasons.

• Earlier this summer, Gomez made the Junior World Team at 61 kg, but was unfortunately unable to compete due to an injury. He went 8-0 last season wrestling unattached, claiming titles at the Willie Myers Open, Duhawk Open and Sioux City Dave Edmonds Open. He’ll look to hold down the spot at 133 pounds this season.

• Leisure had an outstanding redshirt campaign that ended with a 23-5 record. He wrestled in eight open tournaments, fi nishing in the top-3 in six events and winning four. He compiled fi ve major decisions, one technical fall and seven pins. This season, he’ll compete for the spot at 141 or 149 pounds.

• Coleman, the local product out of Ames, is another Cyclone that’s ready to make an impact. A season ago, Coleman scrapped to a 24-2 record with his only losses coming at the hands of UNI’s top-10 Taylor Lujan. Coleman racked up six major decisons, six technical falls and fi ve pins. The spot at 174 pounds is up for grabs and Coleman is right in the thick of that competition.

BURN IT AND FILL IT• One of Dresser’s fi rst orders of business when getting to Ames was bringing down the partition curtain in Hilton

Coliseum.

• He accomplished this. The capacity for home wrestling meets has grown from just under 9,000 to 14,384, which is the same as basketball.

• Iowa State broke the record for most season tickets sold, which was previously 1,509 set in 2008-09. Last year, Cyclone fans accounted for over 1,600 season tickets sold.

• Iowa State’s average attendance last season was 3,841. That ranked sixth nationally and was the fourth-best attendance in school history since 1999.

DUAL AND TOURNAMENT RECAPSIOWA STATE CLAIMS THREE INDIVIDUAL TITLES AT CYCLONE OPENAMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team kicked off its season with competition at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open. In total, 18 Cyclone grapplers fi nished in the top-3 of their brackets, and Alex Mackall, Willie Miklus and Francis Duggan all put out championship performances.

Mackall wrestled in one of the smaller brackets at the Cyclone Open. The 125-pound open bracket featured a round robin format. Mackall defeated Missouri’s Cameron Valdiviez by 8-5 decision and followed that up with a 15-8 victory over Grand View’s Justin Portillo.

Miklus was dominant in his run to the Cyclone Open fi nals at 197 pounds. Miklus pinned Matthew Wenzel in 0:52 to open the tournament and parlayed that into a fall in 0:54 over Wisconsin’s Brady Wetter. In the fi nals, he defeated Grand View’s NAIA national champion Evan Hansen by 5-2 decision.

Duggan’s path to the fi nals was a little bit longer than Miklus’, but just as dominant. Duggan rattled off three fi rst-period falls before reaching the fi nals where he faced a familiar foe. Boone McDermott got the better of Duggan on a couple occa-sions in high school, but it was Duggan who would take the Cyclone Open title with an emphatic 6-0 decision over the Iowa Central Triton.
