Iowa Beef ExpoHeifer Award

The Iowa Beef Breeds Council has started a program in which each breed holding a sale at theIowa Beef Expo will have the opportunity to present a $500 Iowa Beef Expo Heifer Awardsponsored by the Iowa Beef Breeds Council to ajunior exhibitor who purchased and exhibited aheifer from their breed sale. Each breed association has been asked to develop their owncriteria for this award. Listed below are the tworequirements of the Iowa Beef Breeds Council.

The Iowa Beef Breeds Council will award $250 tothe junior exhibitor of the highest ranking heiferpurchased from each breed sale at the 2010 IowaBeef Expo and exhibited at the 2010 Iowa StateFair. Heifers will be ranked at the discretion ofeach breed association under the following conditions:

1. The heifer must have been purchased in anIowa Beef Expo sanctioned sale and exhibitedby a junior at the 2010 Iowa State Fair.

2. Only one heifer per breed sale (11 total) will beawarded. Therefore, high and low percentagecattle will be considered for one award.Furthermore, cattle with multiple breed registrations may only be awarded by the breedassociation which sold those cattle at the 2010Iowa Beef Expo.

2011 Sale DedicationTom and Sandy grew up in Shorthorn families. Tom with Parkview Shorthorns from

Latimer and Sandy with Eddycrest Shorthorns from Clear Lake. Although living only 30 milesapart they finally met when Sandy was Iowa Lassie Queen in 1965. They married in 1967 andlater, with their children Amy and Matthew, they formed Johnson Family Shorthorns

They all became actively involved with the Shorthorn Association and its activities. Tomserved on the Iowa Shorthorn Association board of directors and as president for two terms.He was a delegate and a chairman for many years to the annual meetings and served on thenational sales and promotion committee. He was also the Shorthorn representative to the IowaBeef Breeds Council.

Tom and Sandy were junior advisors. Amy and Matthew were actively involved in the JuniorShorthorn Association and participated in both state and national events. Amy was National Lassie Queen in 1989 and dur-ing that time many friends were made all across North America.

Sandy was also recognized as Iowa Lassie of the year in 1990.The Iowa Beef Expo has always been a special event for all the Johnsons. In 1985 they had the Grand and Supreme

Champion Bull which sold for a new record price at that time. Over the years they had several top sellers. Buyers from 16states and Canada purchased Shorthorns from JFS at the expo.

The Johnsons still farm and Sandy works for Times Citizen Communications, Inc., in Iowa Falls. The cow herd was dis-persed a few years ago. Most of their cows were purchased by an outstanding Shorthorn Family; Gilman Shorthorns of Stuart,Iowa.

They sincerely thank the Iowa Shorthorn Association board of directors and its officers and all their friends for this veryprestigious award and are truly humbled and honored.
