III. Review 2014 Annual Report
A. Greeting & Introductions
B. Overview & History
Introduction of OSCEP’s Director, Greg Nelson. Brenda Hoskins and Kendra Williams-Perez are unable to attend today’s meeting.
The APN Tracking System is a continuous inventory of all Iowa APNs, including CRNAs, Nurse Midwives and Certified Nursing Specialists.
The purpose of this information is to describe the APN population, monitor trends, support and evaluate programs, etc.
C. Annual Benchmarks
D. Geographic Distribution
1,812 APNs identified at 2014 yearend. C. Kron states that most of the basic metrics remain stable across the discipline. Since 1999, the annual increase in the active Iowa APN population has been 6-8% a year. CRNAs are the second largest sub-set after family medicine. Since 1999 CRNAs have historically been primarily males. From 2011 to 2014 they have achieved a 50-50 split. This graphic requested last year provides the detail of this trend. The overall age distribution is moving towards a more positive distribution. The reduction in the numbers of APNS over 62 years of age may be due to improved economic factors allowing more retirements. There is a new Acute Care Practitioner program coming on line at the University of Iowa. Also, there is the extra year factor beginning to allow dual-preparation of ‘specialties’ in APN certification. The full-time vs. part-time remains constant and only applies to paid employees. There are 947 incorporated communities in Iowa, with Lineville, pop. 217, being the smallest to have an APN provider.
On the locations by community population, include the percent of Iowa’s population in each community size cohort. Forty-six counties of Iowa have a population of 15,000 or less. Interest in seeing trend line of APN workforce in primary care by percentage.
OSCEP will provide. OSCEP will provide.
IV. Discussion Items
Interest in ethnicity detail. Bi-lingual? Looking to alter acronym from ARNP to APRN.
