Many beautiful slack key recordings have originated from guitars made from these trees, most of which come from Moku O Keawe or the “Big Island”. Kimo: solo acoustic baritone guitar Tuning: D Taro Patch Mauna Kea Meditation The highest peak in the Hawaiian Islands, Mauna O Wakea rises from the deepest of oceans and is the most sacred mountain in Hawai‘i. The “White Mountain” is also the home of Poli‘ahu, the snow diety and the 14,000 foot summit is bathed in white during the winter months. Kimo: acoustic guitars, Moog guitar, percussion Simone Vitucci: cello: Erik Rynearson: viola Tunings: Open D, lowered to D b Solo guitar: Ånuenue tuning El Álcåzar I will never forget my first visit to El Real Álcåzar de Seville (Royal Álcazar of Seville) in southern Spain. It is a beautiful sanctuary, and the rich layers of history are so visible. Originally built by Moorish kings, it is a great example of “mudejar” architecture and is still used by the Spanish royal family. Kimo: acoustic baritone guitar Jamie Papish: dumbek, riq, shakers Dan Lutz: upright bass Ben Powell: violin Tuning: D Taro Patch Daydream At Jumbo Rocks Joshua Tree National Park is my favorite California desert getaway. The landscape is surreal, and the stars are incredibly bright at night. Jumbo Rocks is where I go to hike and to just daydream. Kimo: acoustic and electric guitars, Moog guitar, electric bass, drum programming Marty Rifkin: lap steel guitar Tuning: Mahoe Morning Music Although far from being traditional, this tune was inspired by the kora music of West Africa. I have always been a fan of that legato ringing sound and often incorporate that into my Hawaiian slack key playing. Kimo: acoustic guitars, acoustic steel guitar, Gorky bottle Brad Dutz: percussion Dan Lutz: fretless bass Tunings: Open D, lowered to Db G Taro Patch, capoed to D b ‘Iolani Palace Waltz ‘Iolani Palace in downtown Honolulu was the official residence of Hawaii‘s royalty from the mid to late 1800’s. This piece was inspired by stories of the Hawaiian monarchs King Kalakaua, Princess Ka‘iulani and Queen Lili‘uokalani who entertained their honored guests with dinner parties and music, much like the royal family they had visited in England. Kimo: acoustic guitar Ben Powell: violin Simone Vitucci: cello Erik Rynearson: viola Glen Berger: flute Tuning: C Old Mauna Loa Floyd The Spider The best web design in Hawai‘i is done by the common Hawaiian Garden Spider. Their orb-shaped webs are amazing and they usually build them right in the places you need to be. They really are harmless and quite charming though-you might even want to adopt one of your own! Kimo: solo acoustic guitar Tuning: G Taro Patch Mele Menehune Inspired by the legendary little people of ancient Kaua‘i - the “menehune”, this suite combines Hawaiian slack key guitar with orchestral and electro-acoustic elements. Originally recorded in 2006, this music could very well accompany a real or imagined journey along the island‘s dramatic Na Pali Coast. Kimo: 6 and 12 string acoustic guitars, baritone acoustic guitar, steel guitar, orchestral programming, percussion Tunings: C Old Mauna Loa, capoed to the 7th fret, D Taro Patch Song For Fess This farewell song is for my good friend David “Fess” Bourne who will be remembered fondly by so many. A superb musician and historian of western music, Fess organized many wonderful jam sessions, and I was honored to have been invited to many of them. I met so many other talented musicians through Fess including the violinist who plays on this recording.
