The IOC Athletes’ Commission Election is your chance to elect your representatives onto the IOC Athletes’ Commission. At the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, two seats will become available through the election taking place at the Athlete365 Space in both Villages. Current members Angela RUGGIERO and Adam L. PENGILLY will be finishing their terms of office at the Games in PyeongChang in 2018.

The six candidates running for the IOC Athletes’ Commission Election come from three continents and represent five different sports.

All accredited athletes (Aa) participating in the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 are eligible to vote.

Les élections à la commission des athlètes du CIO sont pour vous l’occasion d’élire vos représentants à cette commission. Aux Jeux Olympiques d’hiver de PyeongChang 2018, deux sièges devront être pourvus lors des élections qui se tiendront dans l’espace Athlete365, dans les deux villages. Where can I vote?

At the Olympic Villages; the voting booths are located in the Athlete365 Space at the entrance to the main dining halls in both the PyeongChang and Gangneung Olympic Villages. The Athlete365 Space will be open from 1 to 21 February 2018. On 21 February 2018 it will close at 12 noon.

I believe in the Olympic Charter and the ideals and values it represents. The vision of the IOC, where the Olympic Movement will contribute to the development of a better world, stands for me as ambitious and inspiring. I wish to be the voice that lays the ground for the IOC to develop in close collaboration with the athletes, creating those outstanding and fascinating moments we never forget. Those moments that unite both competitors and spectators.

After competing in the Olympic Games twice, I have seen the value and importance of meeting and interacting with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Non-discrimination is fundamental. We are living in a world more fragile than ever, but also with so many opportunities. As Olympic athletes, we can be the perfect example for peaceful and fair interactions across different cultures and barriers. It pays off to engage and fight for a better future, with fair, spectacular and clean competitions held in accordance with the athletes’ values and wishes. I promise you, I am a fighter!

Je crois dans la Charte olympique ainsi que dans l’idéal et les valeurs qu’elle véhicule. La vision du CIO et du Mouvement olympique – contribuer à l’édification d’un monde meilleur – est pour moi ambitieuse et stimulante. Je souhaite être la voix qui jette les bases du développement du CIO en étroite collaboration avec les athlètes, créant ces moments forts et fascinants qui restent à jamais gravés dans nos mémoires. Ces moments qui rassemblent aussi bien les concurrents que les spectateurs.

Après deux participations aux Jeux Olympiques, j’ai compris l’intérêt et l’importance de rencontrer et de dialoguer avec des personnes de cultures et d’horizons différents. La non-discrimination est un élément essentiel. Nous vivons dans un monde plus fragile que jamais, mais qui offre en même temps tellement de perspectives. En tant qu’athlètes olympiques, nous pouvons être les parfaits exemples d’un dialogue pacifique et juste entre différentes cultures, au-delà des obstacles. My dream was to be an Olympian. I started from scratch and went on to become one of the top athletes, fulfilling my dream in Vancouver and Sochi. Skeleton is my sport and my life. I was the first athlete to represent Spain in skeleton at the Olympics. I understand the sacrifices Olympic athletes make. I would like to make competing both fairer and more competitive. We need to listen and ask ourselves if this is what we want. It’s not about national origin, language, religion or gender. It’s about sports. My favourite moments from the Olympic Games are when you are waiting with all the other athletes at the Opening Ceremony. There are no winners, no losers. We are all the same. This is what it’s all about. We need to save sport from doping and cheaters. From everything that goes against the very spirit of sport. As a candidate, I want to listen to the athletes and work hard on behalf of them, and for their benefit. We need to nurture the Olympic structure on its path to maturity. I can’t do this alone. It can only be done by working together. I am Ander Mirambell and I humbly ask for your vote.

Mon rêve était de devenir un olympien. Je suis parti de zéro pour devenir l’un des meilleurs athlètes, réalisant mon rêve à Vancouver et à Sotchi. Le skeleton est le sport que je pratique et c’est aussi toute ma vie. J’ai été le premier athlète à représenter l’Espagne en skeleton aux Jeux Olympiques. Je comprends les sacrifices que les athlètes olympiques font. J’aimerais rendre la pratique sportive plus juste et plus compétitive. Nous devons écouter et nous demander si c’est ce que nous voulons. Il ne s’agit pas d’origine nationale, de langue, de religion ou de sexe. Il s’agit de sport. Les moments que je préfère aux Jeux Olympiques sont lorsque nous attendons tous ensemble à la cérémonie d’ouverture. Il n’y a ni vainqueur, ni perdant. Nous sommes tous égaux. Dear Fellow Athletes,

The Olympic Movement is important to me. The Olympic spirit unites countries around the world, provides a “stadium of dreams” for aspiring athletes, and promotes a message of peace and togetherness.

The greatest thrill for me is to walk into the stadium during the Opening Ceremony, joined by athletes from around the globe. The Olympic motto of “faster, higher, stronger” inspires me to strive for perfection in everything I do.

I have participated in four Olympic Winter Games. I have served for eight years on the International Ski Federation (FIS) Athletes’ Commission. I am a good listener, and I strive to reach the resolution of issues important to athletes.

I will bring my experience, passion and dedication to the IOC Athletes’ Commission to strengthen the Olympic Movement, and to ensure an Olympic legacy for generations to come. I will be particularly focused on protecting clean athletes, helping athletes develop their abilities outside sport and promoting Olympic Games that are environmentally sustainable. I would appreciate your vote.

Le Mouvement olympique est important à mes yeux. L’esprit olympique unit les pays partout dans le monde, offre « des stades de rêve » aux athlètes en devenir et diffuse un message de paix et d’unité.

Pour moi, le plus grand frisson est de pénétrer dans le stade pour la cérémonie d’ouverture aux côtés d’athlètes venus de toute la planète. La devise olympique « plus vite, plus haut, plus fort » m’encourage à la perfection dans tout ce que j’entreprends.

J’ai participé à quatre éditions des Jeux Olympiques d’hiver. J’ai siégé pendant huit ans à la commission des athlètes de la Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS). Je sais écouter et je m’efforce de trouver une solution aux questions qui sont importantes pour les athlètes.

J’apporterai mon expérience, ma passion et mon dévouement à la commission des athlètes du CIO afin de rendre le Mouvement olympique plus fort et laisser un héritage olympique aux générations à venir. Chers athlètes,

Le Mouvement olympique rapproche les peuples partout dans le monde et leur permet de réaliser leurs rêves. Le sport joue un grand rôle dans notre société, mais nous ne devons pas oublier de préserver son intégrité afin d’être crédibles. Les athlètes sont au cœur de ce Mouvement et notre voix doit être forte au CIO pour défendre nos droits et encourager la prise de décisions responsables afin d’assurer l’avenir du Mouvement olympique.

Je suis double médaillée olympique et quintuple olympienne. J’ai compris à quel point il était important d’avoir une influence sur notre avenir et celui du Mouvement olympique.

Dans un premier temps, j’ai rejoint la commission des athlètes du CNO finlandais, puis j’ai représenté les athlètes à son conseil exécutif.

Je travaille maintenant dans le secteur financier et je suis également mère de deux enfants, mais le sport a fait de moi ce que je suis aujourd’hui. C’est pourquoi j’estime qu’il est temps de donner en retour à ce Mouvement. Je pense que ma longue carrière sportive me permet de voir les choses de façon très utile dans ce contexte. Ce serait un immense honneur pour moi de vous représenter, vous les athlètes, à la commission des athlètes du CIO.

Dear Athletes,

The Olympic Movement unites people all over the world and enables them to fulfil their dreams. Sports play a big role in our society, but we must remember to take care of their integrity to be credible. Athletes are the heart of this movement, and our voice needs to be strong in the IOC to defend athletes’ rights and promote responsible decisions to guarantee the future of the Olympic Movement.

I am a double Olympic medallist and five-time Olympian. I have realised how important it is to influence how things will be for us athletes and for the Olympic Movement in the future.

As one step, I became active in the Athletes’ Commission of the NOC of Finland, and I was also an athlete representative on the NOC Executive Board.

I currently work in the financial sector and I am a mother of two, but sports shaped my life as to who I am today, and I feel it is my time to give back to the movement. I believe my long sporting career gives me perspective that is very useful in this context. It would be a great honour to represent you, the athletes, in the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

My name is Zhang Hong. I come from a northern Chinese ice city: Harbin. I’ve been skating for 22 years in both short track speed skating and speed skating. Now I’m also pursuing my PhD degree in Physical Training and Education at the Northeast Normal University of China.

The year 2014 was a big year for me. I skated in the Olympic Winter Games for the first time and got my first Olympic gold medal, which both made my dream come true.

That was the first ever speed skating Olympic gold medal for China. I want to thank the IOC for offering us splendid Olympic Games and bringing us those unforgettable memories.

In 2015, I was honoured as a Promotion Ambassador for Beijing’s bid for the Olympic Winter Games 2022. When I witnessed President Bach announcing Beijing as the host city, my heart was beating so fast. I realised that I want to do something for the athletes, promote our ideas and also help Chinese sport get better involved in the world sports community. And just as Nelson Mandela said, “Sport has the power to change the world.” I would love to dedicate myself to my beloved sports career.

Je m’appelle Zhang Hong. Je suis originaire d’une ville du nord de la Chine passionnée de sports de glace : Harbin. Je fais du patinage de vitesse et du patinage de vitesse sur piste courte depuis 22 ans. Je suis également doctorante en éducation physique à l’École normale supérieure du Nord-Est de la Chine.

2014 fut une grande année pour moi. J’ai participé aux Jeux Olympiques d’hiver pour la première fois et y ai remporté ma première médaille d’or olympique – la concrétisation d’un rêve.

Cette médaille était aussi la toute première médaille d’or olympique pour la Chine en patinage de vitesse. Je souhaite remercier le CIO de nous offrir de magnifiques Jeux Olympiques et de nous laisser ces souvenirs inoubliables.

En 2015, j’ai eu l’honneur d’être nommée ambassadrice de la candidature de Beijing pour les Jeux Olympiques d’hiver de 2022. Lorsque j’ai entendu le président Thomas Bach annoncer l’élection de Beijing comme ville hôte, mon cœur s’est mis à battre plus vite. J’ai compris que je voulais faire quelque chose pour les athlètes, défendre nos idées et aussi aider le sport chinois à être davantage présent au sein de la communauté sportive mondiale. Comme l’a dit Nelson Mandela : « Le sport a le pouvoir de changer le monde. » J’aimerais beaucoup me consacrer à ma chère carrière sportive.

I would like to become a member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission and a member of the IOC because I strongly believe in its mission.

I think that athletes are more and more in need of an effective, open and reliable link with the Olympic family. They need a platform where they can share any matter related to their career, and they need the right people to talk about them.

This platform needs to embrace all the different areas that are included in the life of the athletes, and it should have as its main objective to maintain the focus of the organisation on their needs.

I feel the wish and somehow the duty to share my experience after my long career. I feel I have to put everything I learned during my 30 years as a luger at the service of the new generation of athletes and commit to improving their future.

Je souhaiterais devenir membre de la commission des athlètes du CIO et du CIO car je crois profondément dans leur mission.

Je pense que les athlètes ont de plus en plus besoin d’un lien efficace, ouvert et fiable avec la famille olympique. Ils ont besoin d’une plateforme où ils peuvent discuter de tout ce qui concerne leur carrière, et ils ont besoin des bonnes personnes pour en parler.

Cette plateforme doit réunir tous les domaines qui font partie de la vie des athlètes. Elle devrait avoir pour objectif principal de veiller à ce que leurs besoins demeurent au cœur des préoccupations de l’organisation.

J’ai le souhait et, en quelque sorte, le devoir de partager mon expérience après ma longue carrière. J’estime devoir mettre tout ce que j’ai appris en 30 ans de carrière comme lugeur au service de la nouvelle génération d’athlètes et m’engager à améliorer leur avenir.
