Brand Carnival 2011 was a two-day exquisite event organized
by Marketing Society, IoBM where various organizations
showcased their brands and promoted them. This event, held at
the IoBM campus, began on 30th
January 2011 and ended the
next day with full boom and hype and on a promising note.
Coca Cola rejuvenated the cricket junoon among students, and created long
queues of students who wanted to get their fair share of junooni pics. It
featured purpose-built booths where fans recorded brief messages and posed
for pictures. The photos were printed and framed for each participant at the event. It was further complemented by
the perpetually cheerful presence of Chacha cricket, the symbol of cricket
passion in Pakistan. Chacha kept on waving the national flag and pulled huge
numbers of students to the Coca Cola section. Just nearby Ideas by Gul Ahmed
introduced its brand new collection of menswear and Nuance pulled a huge
number of students with its exclusive collection of T-Shirts while just beside
them HP put on an impressive display of all new and highly sophisticated range
of Laptops and printers. The ‘skin angels’ from Vaseline ensured that many
eyes kept glued to them who in turn provided some amazing skin solutions to
the interested onlookers. Next to Vaseline’s stall were Sensodyne medical
specialists who conducted chill tests on the students’ teeth. Some of the tests
were really fruitful and many students were found taking the chill tests. Just
nearby Blue Ribbon promoted their fresh range of mouth fresheners with a heavy free sampling activity.
Knorr kept the students warm with boiling hot soups and stalls belonging to Subway and Karachi Roll ensured a
constant supply of fresh and delicious snacks. Toyota Central Motors exhibited a range of new models of Toyota
Hilux Turbo, Avanza and Daihatsu Terios. The sparkly cars with all pomp and splendor were more than an
attraction for auto lovers. And for those who didn’t get to taste Omore yet,
there it was! A typical Omore vendor cart was right there in the middle,
surrounded by keen customers dying to have a taste of it. Until the
afternoon of the last day the Omore cart was among the most visited stalls
at the entire carnival. Other brands like KarachiSnob.com, Oxygene
Pakistan and Radioactive 96FM covered the event on their respective
mediums. Some major services brands such as UBL Fund Managers with
innovative financial solutions and ISE cards with some stunning services
on offer for students were extra attractions and had many visitors by the
second day. PTCL introduced its new EVO 3G 3.1 which promises a superior roaming 3G internet experience and
FedEx demonstrated its powerful presence in the Pakistani courier market with some excellent promotions.
DELVING ON THE ‘DIMENSIONS ’
‘Dimensions’, the annual magazine published by the Marketing Society was
also formally launched at the event. It was a moment of pride and joy for the
whole team of the Marketing Society and especially the publications and
research team whose hard work and dedication ensured that the magazine is
launched in time and with some incredible research and analysis. The Brand
Carnival was also attended by Mr. Masood Hashmi, President Marketing
Association of Pakistan (MAP). He, along with the Rector of IoBM, Mr. Talib
Karim, took keen interest in the entire occasion besides highly appreciating
this unique enterprise. All in all, the event was a marked success for the
Society itself and for IoBM. It provided a perfect platform for the students to
have a direct interaction with the corporate sector and some really creative
marketing activities which gave them a first hand experience of the marketing
dynamics in this ever changing environment. The huge number of students
who participated in this event made it a noticeable accomplishment on the
part of the Marketing Society which h as always tried to bridge the gap
between the businesses and the academies through events like the Brand
Carnival. The credit goes to the whole marketing team and especially to the
Faculty Advisor Ms. Shehnaz Meghani, President Mr. Roydon D’mello and Vice president Mr. Syed Zain Abid for a
remarkable show of excellent team coordination and skillful management of this entire event. --- Hayat Omer Malik

STREAMLINING POPULATION STRATEGIES
An interactive Seminar on Population Strategies in Sindh: New developments under the 18
th Amendment,
jointly organized by the Centre for Studies in Sindh, Institute of Business Management (IoBM) and Rotary Fund for Population and Sustainable
Development in Karachi recently, addressed core issues from Mother and Child Health in Sindh to Population and Development in Sindh, especially in the social sector.
The Chief Guest at this Seminar was Mr. Nisar Khuhro, Speaker, Sindh Assembly and was attended by Mr. Shahjehan Karim, President IoBM, Dr. Mehtab S. Karim, Senior Fellow, George Mason University, USA and Visiting Professor, IoBM, Dr. Farhan Essa Abdullah, Director Operations and Technical Services, Dr. Essa‟s Lab and Diagnostic Centre, Mr. Talib Karim, Rector, IoBM. Mr. Bashir Ahmed Mangi, Director General Population Welfare Department, Government of Sindh, Mr. Naseer Nizamani, UNFP and Rotarians: Dr. Ali Akhter and Mr. Irfan Qureshi. It was largely attended by distinguished IoBM faculty and media.
Mr. Nisar Khuhro said that there were two concerns regarding population welfare. These problems pertained to controlling the population and caring for the population. He opined that infrastructure and facilities regarding population welfare were present. He said that manpower was also available in this regard. But the primary problem, he added, was to monitor the working of personnel responsible in population welfare. It is a challenge for our economists to address the fact that 10 million young people have not contributed anything to the economy and are immobilized. He expressed deep concern over idleness of the youth leading to conflict, violence and crimes. He called for vision, innovation and commitment to address magnanimous population growth
and plan today for tomorrow‟s water and food needs, law and order and socio-economic development. Dr. Mehtab Karim said that while Pakistan‟s population was growing at alarming proportions, Muslim countries like Iran and Bangladesh were examples in population planning. At the provincial level, he added, a Population Policy for Sindh needs to be formulated and well-defined. Specific strategies need to be developed to successfully meet the challenge of the fast growing population in the province. For this purpose the best way would be the establishment of Sindh Foundation for Population Activities, where all the stakeholders namely; the Provincial
Government, NGOs, the private sector and key professionals could be assigned proper tasks under Public Private Partnership.
Dr. Farhan Essa, Dr. Ali Akhtar and Mr. Irfan Qureshi informed about the priority Rotarians attach to population welfare. Rotary Marketing Fund
has been established with Rotarians from business, multinationals, elite and the NGOs voluntarily contributing to public welfare. It was informed 33,000 clubs were instrumental in public welfare activities in 200 countries. Mr. Bashir Ahmed Mangi highlighted family planning services and facilities, monitoring and evaluation, capacity building, information and education. Mr. Talib Karim said that IoBM completes 15 years in terms of its endeavors to maintain its existing image, reputation and its efforts to strive for diversification. IoBM not only aims to train graduates in specialized fields but also instills in its graduates a spirit of social responsibility, a sensitivity to the needs of the day and an obligation to address social concerns. IoBM has conducted training for Population Welfare Department. The Centre for Research in Sindh of the Institute of Business Management was set up in a conference on the theme of Prospects and Progress of Sindh organized by IoBM in 2008 by an honored guest on this occasion, Mr. Nisar Khuro.

Ashes Gig and Awami Junction
The Management
Society organized
two events, a gig by „The Ashes,‟ a band which would now be very well known to the
IoBMers, as well as a skit called Awami Junction, performed by the Nautanki Gang. The concert took place at the student activity center during the second and third session, and if success is to be measured and compared in terms of past attendance to another concert organized by TMS featuring the same band, then it can easily be said that this one was literally off the scale. Word of mouth spreads fast and far, and at the end of the first concert, people were going gaga about the event. So when IoBMers heard that The Ashes were coming for another show, they couldn‟t miss out at any cost, and for those who missed out on the first opportunity, this was the chance to see what the whole deal was about. The band performed hits from famous acts like Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, and Abida Parveen to name a few, and rocked the activity center like
no one else before them. (During the 4th
Session, the famous VJ Jewel from Play TV came to the auditorium on behalf of TMS, and entertained the audience. This was followed by a welcome speech by Sarah Mashood, President of The Management Society and a sitcom called Awami Junction, was performed to a full house by Ahmed Saeed Khan‟s Nautanki Gang, featuring himself, Tariq Ali Qasim, Adil Khan and others. The skit was based on Social Responsibility, with a comic twist to it, and was loosely based on the lives of people coming in from different backgrounds. The skit was organized to raise awareness about the dark sections of our society, and the norms prevailing within them, with a need to bring about change. The play was a resounding success, and received thunderous applause from the audience, including the HOD Management, Mr. Javed Ahmed, Faculty Advisor of TMS, Mr. Humayun Zafar, among others.

Dawn News was the official media partner and covered the whole event, while GSK was the official sponsor. The event began when all the students participating were divided into teams, followed by letting go of balloons in the air, along with a „rung‟ fight aka Holi. Students were made to realize that having fun comes with a responsibility as well, and that we tend to overlook the damage we do the environment at our own expense. The cleaning activity
followed soon after, and garbage bags and plastic gloves were distributed among the teams. Within a span of an hour, the surrounding areas looked as if they belonged to a beach from the Far East, all thanks to a job which was amazingly well done by all the participants, as well as the faculty, including Mr. Humayun Zafar (Faculty Advisor), Mr. Fazal Khalidi, Ms. Fauzia and Dr Shahid Ahmed. The beach cleanup activity was followed by the MAX session conducted by the renowned trainer Umair Jaliawala, with an aim to bring out the best in us and maximizing our potential. Activities included rope skipping in teams, forming a human pyramid, tug of war, making shapes like squares, an X, etc by lying down, sand turtles, and pair football, where the feet of every two people were tied together. Food was served after the session, and special care was taken that no litter was left behind after all was said and done. The fun filled activities, the sense of team work and synergy, as well as the cleaning up led to a great sense of achievement among the participants and an overwhelming response. TMS is now looking forward to conducting more such events to raise awareness and bringing out the best in students.

IoBM Finance Society has been known for its informative events. Invest-o-mania was another panel
discussion organized by the Finance Society in order to promote the understanding among the students regarding investing their money in different channels of investment prevailing in the market. The panel comprised of Mr. Muhammad Asim VP (Portfolio Manager Equities) of MCB Asset Management Company, Mr. Ahsan Mahenti Director Wealth Management of Arif Habib Investments Ltd and Mr. Ali Abbasi of Abbasi Securities Pvt. Ltd. The discussion started with the importance of investment in the lives of every individual and that they may invest their money in debt securities, equity securities and also in commodities like gold, silver, wheat etc. It was mentioned that the National Commodity Exchange (NCE) has not triggered investment in gold by individuals instead has affected the business of traders. Investing in commodity is relatively risky for individuals hedging their cash flows where as investment in equity and debt instruments provided by stable organizations
comes along with a certainty of positive returns. About individuals investing their money, it is essential to have an assurance regarding returns and security of investment itself. They mentioned that there are no cash flows attached to gold and that it is a store value even for which you do not get a fair price. Investment in wheat or rice comes along with storage costs. Pakistani economic environment is portraying inconsistency and people do not have any idea regarding fluctuation in efficiency levels of companies and banks as they end up investing in gold and other commodities. It was concluded that a reverse step regarding one‟s investment should only be taken if the economic crisis has affected any of the listed factors that triggered the process of that investment. The panelists even mentioned that depending upon Pakistan's current economic conditions it is beneficial to invest in debt securities rather than equity or commodities. The session ended being beneficial and a remarkable experience for the audience.
