Volume 16, Issue 1 Spring / Summer 2020 Today- John A. Klebba Some 36 years ago, Dr. Robert H. Schuller wrote what would become a bestseller, titled Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do. In a relatively short 240 pages, Dr. Schuller teaches that each of us has the potential to achieve the best in life regardless of how tough times might get. Our reality today is that times are tough - really tough. Few of us in the U. S. could have envisioned the radical changes that have upended our everyday lives, much less the speed of those changes. But despite our present circumstances, we need to remember the lessons embodied in Dr. Schuller’s book as we prepare for better times ahead. In my humble opinion, governments at all levels are making the hard but necessary decisions to exit us from the coronavirus pandemic with the minimum amount of health, social and economic long-term damage. Certainly, bank regulators have highly encouraged banks to work with their customers in light of the new economic realities Americans face. It is our intent to do just that, and already we have had numerous conversations with our customers on what they need to tide them over until the situation improves. At Legends Bank, even in these tough times we are continuing to focus on improving the customer experience for our ever-expanding base. In just the last few weeks we upgraded our website to allow both new and existing customers to open deposit accounts completely online. While our customers have had the ability for quite some time to apply for mortgages online, we are working to expand that capacity to include non-mortgage loan applications as well. In addition, before the end of this year we will be rolling out an enhanced person to person (P2P) payment system that will allow our customers to transfer funds from their Legends Bank account directly to someone else’s account using their mobile phones. Our upgrades are not limited to our online platform. Later this year we will begin the planning stages to break ground on a new branch near the Forum Shopping Center in Rolla to serve our growing customer base there. In Linn we are in the process of more than doubling the size of our headquarters building, which will improve our ability to serve not only the Linn area but customers throughout our entire bank network. In addition, we continue to explore other expansion opportunities that fit into our long-term business model. While enhancing our financial services offerings is important, it is secondary to maintaining the confidentiality of our customer’s information. We have heavily invested in cyber security and test its effectiveness frequently. Just as importantly, we stress to our employees, from their very first day of employment, the importance of confidentiality in all their interactions outside the bank, so that what they see and hear at Legends Bank stays at Legends Bank. Finally, please know that Legends Bank remains one of the safest banks in the country. We recently received notice from BauerFinancial that the bank has maintained its 5 Star Rating (Superior). We retain much more capital than required by state and federal regulations, with the goal of being fully capable of assisting our customers, regardless of the state of the economy. If you are a current Legends Bank customer, our continued thanks for your loyalty. If you are not yet, I invite you to contact us to explore what a locally owned, locally managed, locally invested bank can do for you. Mary Ann GelvenAdvantage Club Director

Recently an Advantage Club member talked to me about her desire to visit all 50 states and wanted to know if we had a trip planned to the one, last state on her list. A lot of people have a bucket list of states, countries, or sites they want to see. Or perhaps there’s something they want to do. Advantage Club members have zip lined and flown in helicopters over volcanoes in Hawaii! There is so much to See & Do!

You will find the Advantage Club trips vary in length and are planned to give you a wide variety of destinations and activities to choose from. Our day trips include theatre, a destination for women on our ladies’ day out, a grandparent’s trip where grandparents can take grandchildren, and a mystery trip to an unknown destination. We also include at least one overnight trip, which allows us to visit neighboring states. Our extended trips will always include at least one motor coach trip, if you’re one of those who do not like to fly.

Check out the Advantage Club calendar to the left of this article for 2020 trips, and several trips for 2021. We’re in the planning stages for 2021 but here’s a snippet of information on four of our extended trips. In March we’ll head south to sunny Jupiter, Florida to watch the Cardinals in Spring Training. In June we’re headed to Niagara Falls and Toronto, where we’ll stay and tour in Canada. In the fall the Advantage Club will explore the Canyonlands of Southern Utah

and visit five national parks and monuments. Our extended motor coach trip in 2021 takes you to Colorful Colorado in late August.

Besides traveling we have quarterly Lunch and Learns. We start the morning with Bingo, followed by a speaker, and end with a wonderful catered meal. Our interesting guest speakers share their knowledge on a wide range of topics. Also, on your birthday month, you can join your Advantage Club friends at our Birthday Celebration. It is held the first Tuesday of the month at the main bank in Linn and starts at 10:00 a.m.

If you haven’t experienced group travel you will find it provides the opportunity to relax, enjoy and experience outstanding sightseeing. While touring our local step-on guides share their love and passion of the area’s history and point out popular landmarks and lead us to hidden gems, which you may not experience when touring on your own.

Our events and trips give members the opportunity to travel and learn, so come

Mary Lou Katnik leads and manages company risk management programs, promotes a culture of risk awareness and accountability through training, and facilitates work relationships across departments. Yes, that Google definition of Vice President of Risk Management describes this issues Legendary employee, Mary Lou Katnik, perfectly. After graduating from Ole’ Miss in 1988 with a degree in Accounting, Mary Lou started her career in banking at a bank in Oxford, Mississippi, as an internal Auditor and Compliance Officer. Her husband’s family and career brought her to Missouri where she moved into her first position with Legends Bank on May 1, 1996, as a part-time employee with Audit and Compliance. Mary Lou moved into a full-time capacity as the need became apparent due to growth and complexity. As the bank continued to grow with employees and locations, Mary Lou navigated thru various roles and responsibilities and currently holds the title Vice President of Risk Management.

When Mary Lou is not in a managing role at Legends Bank, she enjoys spending time with family traveling, going to live sporting events, taking in plays at the Fox Theatre, crafting, and her latest project creating wreaths. With three grown children, Mary Lou and her husband Paul now have some time to “visit places we’ve never been to before”.

What keeps you coming back day after day? “I love the people I work with and love my job. The people make it fun! I can think of an example when now retired employee Edith Kirsch tricked a co-worker. The co-worker walked into a trap in the men’s restroom and let us all know he had by letting out a scream like no other. This is what makes the work environment fun.” Even though co-workers can make the day fun, there is seriousness when it comes to taking care of our customers. Mary Lou mentioned that automation has taken away some person-to-person contact; however, there is always a friendly face or ear to listen when any of our customers need that one-one-one attention. “We offer just as many services as the bigger banks with just a personalized touch.”

We extend our thanks to Mary Lou for her 24 years of service and commitment to her community, the banking industry, and each of our customers. Congratulations Mary Lou!

Tips for Targeting YourTips for Targeting YourRetirement Savings GoalRetirement Savings Goal

Regularly Review Your AssumptionsWhether you use a simple online calculator or run a detailed analysis, your retirement savings goal is based on certain assumptions that will, in all likelihood, change. Inflation, rates of return, life expectancies, salary adjustments, retirement expenses, Social Security benefits — all of these factors are estimates. That's why it's important to review your retirement savings goal and its underlying assumptions regularly — at least once per year and when life events occur. This will help ensure that your goal continues to reflect your changing life circumstances as well as market and economic conditions.

Break Down Your GoalInstead of viewing your goal as ONE BIG NUMBER, try to break it down into an anticipated monthly income need. That way you can view this monthly need alongside your estimated monthly Social Security benefit, income from your retirement savings, and any pension or other income you expect. This can help the planning process seem less daunting, more realistic, and most important, more manageable. It can be far less overwhelming to brainstorm ways to close a gap of, say, a few hundred dollars a month than a few hundred thousand dollars over the duration of your retirement.

Stash Extra CashWhile every stage of life brings financial challenges, each stage also brings opportunities. Whenever possible — for example, when you pay off a credit card or school loan, receive a tax refund, get a raise or promotion, celebrate your child's college graduation (and the end of tuition payments), or receive an unexpected windfall — put some of that extra money toward retirement.

Re-imagine RetirementWhen people dream about retirement, they often picture exotic travel, endless rounds of golf, and fancy restaurants. Yet people often derive happiness from ordinary, everyday experiences such as socializing with friends, reading a good book, taking a scenic drive, and playing board games with grandchildren. While your dream may include days filled with extravagant leisure activities, your retirement reality may turn out to be much different, and that actually may be a matter of choice.

Do Your BestSetting a goal is a very important first step in putting together your retirement savings strategy, but don't let the number scare you. As long as you have an estimate in mind, review it regularly, break it down to a monthly need, and increase your savings whenever possible, you can take heart knowing that you're doing your best to prepare for whatever the future may bring.

What if you're saving as much as you can, butstill feel that your retirement savings goal is out of reach?

As with many of life's toughest challenges, it may help tofocus less on the big picture and more on the details.

Volume 16, Issue 1 Spring / Summer 2020

Today-

John A. Klebba

Some 36 years ago, Dr. At Legends Bank, even in these tough times we arecontinuing to focus on improving the customer experience for our ever-expanding base. In Linn we are in the process of more than doubling the size of our headquarters building, which will improve our ability to serve not only the Linn area but customers throughout our entire bank

network.

From all of us at Legends Bank, please be safe and stay healthy.
