San Francisco Symphony Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen has, through his many high-profile conducting roles and work as a leading composer, shaped a unique vision for the present and future of the contemporary symphony orchestra. Salonen is currently the Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor for London’s Philharmonia Orchestra and is Artist in Association at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. He is a member of the faculty of the Colburn School in Los Angeles, where he developed and directs the pre-professional Negaunee Conducting Program. Salonen is the Conductor Laureate for both the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he was Music Director from 1992 until 2009. Salonen co-founded—and from 2003 until 2018 served as the Artistic Director for—the annual Baltic Sea Festival.

artistsMOHAMMAD NEJAD is a Persian-born master multi-instrumentalist with an international reputation as a composer, performer, and recording artist. As a child, Persian classical music was

passed down to him from his father. Mr. Nejad holds a degree in Fine Arts for Musicianship and Performance from Tehran University and is proficient in both Western and Persian musical styles. He plays fifty-six different types of traditional and Western musical instruments.

Mr. Nejad immigrated to the United States in 1995. He established Nejad World Music Center, where he teaches music to youths and adults in the community and brings world-renowned artists to the United States for collaborations and performances. In recent years, Nejad World Music Center Youth Orchestra (the largest youth orchestra of its kind outside of Iran) has presented traditional music as featured performers at many cultural and fundraising events and museums in California.

Mr. Nejad is dedicated to preserving Persian culture, music, and instruments by fostering musical education for Iranian-American children, youth, and the general American public. He believes that teaching the beauty of Persian music creates a greater understanding and unity between Iranian and American cultures and strengthens the cultural integrity of the younger generation of Iranian Americans.

ALEXANDER BARANTSCHIK, occupant of the Naoum Blinder Chair, began his tenure as San Francisco Symphony Concertmaster in September 2001. Former concertmaster of the Bamberg Symphony

Orchestra (Germany), London Symphony Orchestra (1989 to 2001), and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic (1982 to 2001), he has also been an active soloist and chamber musician throughout Europe. Born in Russia, Mr. Barantschik attended the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. His awards include first prize in the International Violin Competition in Sion, Switzerland, and in the Russian National Violin Competition. Mr. Barantschik is a member of the faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he teaches a special graduate concertmaster program. Through an arrangement with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Mr. Barantschik has the exclusive use of the 1742 Guarnerius del Gesù violin once owned by the virtuoso Ferdinand David, and bequeathed to the Fine Arts Museums by Jascha Heifetz.

A native of Seoul, Korea, IN SUN JANG began studying violin and piano at age four. She graduated from the Juilliard School and the New England Conservatory, where she studied with Donald

Weilerstein. A top prize winner at the International Henryk Szeryng Violin Competition, she has appeared as a soloist with the New World Symphony, Puchon Philharmonic, and the Nanpa Festival Orchestra. In 2001, by special invitation of Isaac Stern, Ms. Jang performed at Carnegie Hall as part of the Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshop. She has collaborated with leading artists, such as Menahem Pressler, Thomas Adès, and Orion String Quartet, among others. Prior to joining the San Francisco Symphony in 2011, she was a concertmaster with the New World Symphony.

DAN CARLSON joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2006. He currently serves as Principal Second Violin, occupying the Dinner & Swig Families Chair. He previously served as rotating concertmaster for the

New World Symphony and he has made solo appearances with the Phoenix Symphony, Chicago String Ensemble, New World Symphony, and the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra. A graduate of the Juilliard School, he has performed chamber music extensively throughout New York. Mr. Carlson performs and teaches with the San Francisco Academy Orchestra.

RAUSHAN AKHMEDYAROVA is a native of Kazakhstan and comes from a family of musicians. She won first prize at the National Violin Competition of Kazakhstan, the International Competition of

Asia in Tashkent, the UNISA International Competition in Pretoria, and the Geneva International Competition. She graduated from the Kazakh State Conservatory and studied privately at the Moscow Conservatory, and in 1994 she received a full scholarship to study at Southern Methodist University. Ms. Akhmedyarova was previously associate concertmaster of the New Century Chamber Orchestra and on the faculty of the San Francisco Academy Orchestra. She joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2006.

ADAM SMYLA, who joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2000, won the National Viola Competition in his native Poland at age seventeen. Shortly thereafter he became the youngest member of the

Polish National Radio and Television Orchestra and was invited to join the Penderecki String Quartet, with which he toured internationally for nearly a decade. From 1995 to 2000, Mr. Smyla was assistant principal viola with the Lyric Opera of Chicago and principal viola of the Sun Valley Symphony. He is a viola coach for the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and active in chamber music, performing frequently with his wife, pianist Edna Koren.

MATTHEW YOUNG joined the San Francisco Symphony viola section in 2012. He was a founding member of the Verklärte Quartet, which won grand prize in the 2003 Fischoff National Chamber Music

Competition. He currently performs as a member of Ensemble San Francisco. Winner of a 2007 McKnight Artist Fellowship for Performing Musicians and the Robert Vernon Prize for Viola Performance, he attended the University of Kentucky, Yale School of Music, and Cleveland Institute of Music.

CAROLYN MCINTOSH is a graduate of the University of Redlands and the State University of New York at Binghamton. Prior to joining the San Francisco Symphony in 1981, she served as principal

cello of the San Jose Symphony and the Midsummer Mozart Festival Orchestra. She occupies the Elizabeth C. Peters Cello Chair.

CHARLES CHANDLER is the first member of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra to have become a member of the San Francisco Symphony. He studied with Shinji Eshima of the San

Francisco Opera Orchestra and with David Walter at Juilliard. Prior to joining the Symphony in 1992, he performed at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival and served as associate principal bass of the Phoenix Symphony.

JACOB NISSLY was appointed Principal Percussion of the San Francisco Symphony in 2013. Previously, he was principal percussion of the Cleveland Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony. He also served as a

member of the New World Symphony. He is on the percussion faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory and is currently a coach for the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. He has also taught at the Eastman School of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Mr. Nissly holds a Bachelor of Music and Jazz Studies from Northwestern University and a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School. He began his percussion studies with Woody Smith in Iowa.

JAMES LEE WYATT III joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2001 after serving as principal percussionist of the Honolulu Symphony. A native of Princeton, KY, he received his bachelor’s degree from the

University of Michigan and his master’s degree from Temple University. Mr. Wyatt has performed with the Santa Fe Opera, National Repertory Orchestra, Sun Valley Summer Symphony, and the Ojai, Tanglewood, Spoleto festivals.

STEPHEN PAULSON joined the San Francisco Symphony as Principal Bassoon in 1977. Also a conductor, he has served as Music Director of Symphony Parnassus since 1998. He is a graduate of the Eastman School

of Music, where he studied bassoon with K. David Van Hoesen and Mordechai Rechtman, and composition with Samuel Adler. He has served as principal bassoon with the Rochester Philharmonic and co-principal bassoon of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Mr. Paulson has given masterclasses at colleges worldwide, including the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, and the Shanghai Conservatory. He is longtime Professor of Bassoon at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

AARON SCHUMAN joined the San Francisco Symphony as Associate Principal Trumpet in 2018, occupying the Peter Pastreich Chair. A native of Buffalo, NY, he graduated from Northwestern University’s

Bienen School of Music before pursuing graduate studies at Rice University.

SUZANNE LEON joined the San Francisco Symphony in 1990. Following her graduation from the Curtis Institute of Music, she spent five years in France, where she served as concertmaster of Orchestre

International de Paris and taught at the Sorbonne. Ms. Leon has toured as a member of the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed chamber music frequently with her Symphony colleagues, including pre-concert performances and a concert at

San Francisco’s Chinese Cultural Center. She has two children with her husband, former San Francisco Symphony violinist Dan Nobuhiko Smiley.

BARBARA BOGATIN joined the San Francisco Symphony in 1994. Previously she was principal cello with the Milwaukee and New Jersey symphonies and played as a substitute with the New York

Philharmonic for ten years. She studied cello in the preparatory division of the San Francisco Conservatory, and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School. Along with her neuroscientist husband, she has led workshops on meditation and music practice at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, the Esalen Institute, Stanford University, and in Italy and South Africa. She is a proud parent of two University of California graduates.

CHRIS GILBERT studied with Henry Loew at the University of Southern Illinois and at the Saint Louis Conservatory. He participated in the Tanglewood Music Festival before joining the San Francisco Symphony

bass section in 1978.

EDWARD STEPHAN joined the San Francisco Symphony as Principal Timpani, occupying the Marcia & John Goldman Chair, in 2016. Prior to joining the Orchestra, he served as principal timpani of the

Pittsburgh, Dallas, and the Fort Worth symphonies. Mr. Stephan holds degrees from the University of North Texas and New England Conservatory of Music. Currently timpanist of the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole, WY, he also serves as chair of the percussion department at Duquesne University. On the faculty of San Francisco Conservatory, he is a coach for the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra.

STAN MUNCY is a Bay Area percussionist and jazz vibe player. A member of the Santa Rosa Symphony, he regularly performs with the San Francisco Symphony. He was percussionist/assistant

timpanist with the Honolulu Symphony. He also performs regularly with eighth blackbird and the new music ensemble-in-residence at UC Berkeley, the Eco Ensemble.

DOUGLAS RIOTH joined the San Francisco Symphony as Principal Harp in 1981. Born in Missouri, he studied with Alice Chalifoux and Elisa Smith Dickon, attended the Interlochen Arts Academy and Cleveland

Institute of Music, and studied at the Berkshire Music Center. Previously principal harp of the Indianapolis Symphony, Mr. Rioth was also a regular participant in the Salzedo Summer Harp Colony. Harp instructor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, he also serves on the coaching team for the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra.

MELISSA KLEINBART, occupant of the Katharine Hanrahan Chair, joined the San Francisco Symphony in 1998 after serving as associate concertmaster with the San Francisco Opera orchestra and

assistant concertmaster with the Vancouver Symphony. In addition to solo appearances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony, and New York Symphonic Ensemble, Ms. Kleinbart has been a participant at the Marlboro and Tanglewood music festivals and has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. A graduate of the Juilliard School, she performs and teaches with the San Francisco Academy Orchestra.

CHEN ZHAO joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2000. A native of Shanghai, he studied with his uncle and gave his first public performance at the Shanghai Children’s Palace at age six. He went on to study at

the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Crossroads School for Art and Sciences, Curtis Institute of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the New World Symphony, before joining the San Francisco Symphony. Mr. Zhao has appeared as a soloist with the Curtis Symphony, Oslo Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Stanford Symphony. Currently a violin coach for the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, Chen Zhao is a violin professor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

ANNE PINSKER joined the San Francisco Symphony in 1982. She is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, where she studied with Leonard Rose, and she has served as a member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago

Orchestra and as a regular substitute in the Chicago Symphony.

STEPHEN TRAMONTOZZI serves as San Francisco Symphony Assistant Principal Bass, occupying the Richard & Rhoda Goldman Chair. A native of Arlington, MA, he studied at the Eastman School of Music,

New England Conservatory, and the San Francisco Conservatory, and joined the San Francisco Symphony in 1980. He has been Principal Bass with the Sun Valley Summer Symphony since 2004. A member of the faculty at the San Francisco Conservatory since 1985, Mr. Tramontozzi coaches members of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra bass section. He has also released a solo CD with pianist Keisuke Nakagoshi.

BRYCE LEAFMAN joins the San Francisco Symphony as Assistant Principal Timpani/section percussion during the 2020–21 season. Previously, he was principal percussion of the Billings Symphony, and he has

performed with the Omaha, Berkeley, Marin, and New World symphonies; the Boston Philharmonic; and Symphony New Hampshire. In 2017 he was the first percussionist to win a solo concerto competition at the Aspen Music Festival, where he returned in 2019 as the Charles Owen Memorial Percussion Fellow. Mr. Leafman holds degrees from New England Conservatory, Boston University, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

JENNIFER N. BROWN is a live television and event director and producer. She has more than twenty years “conducting” behind the scenes, collaborating with creative teams and production crews,

directing live events of all types, and delivering news, entertainment, and information through a variety of mediums.

KARA LANCASTER is a transgender multi-disciplined filmmaker based in Portland, OR. She is also a rock climber, a drummer, and an avid traveler. Having started her career in Nashville, TN, she has done film

and photo work in seventeen countries across four continents. With a background in editorial work and a formal education in cinematography and photography, her twelve years of freelance filmmaking have found her primarily operating as a shooter/director/producer on feature films and documentaries, commercial projects, and music videos. Her personal and professional work has been highlighted on PBS, NPR, Paste and Billboard magazines, in theaters, and can be found streaming on Netflix and Amazon. In her work with the San Francisco Symphony, she brings a body of live, in-studio, and music video work with various musical acts around the world, combined with experience shooting, editing, and producing documentary content.

LUKE KRITZECK has worked with artists from diverse disciplines and backgrounds in theater, dance, music, circus, and opera, on stages around the world as a lighting and production designer. He is

currently the resident lighting designer and technical advisor for the San Francisco Symphony and has been a member of the creative team for numerous multimedia Symphony productions in past seasons. Mr. Kritzeck served as the director of lighting at the New World Symphony for seven years. With Cirque du Soleil, he worked on the touring production TOTEM, on its resident show ZAiA in Macau, China, and he also served as the lighting director for featured performances at the Venetian Macau. Selected design credits include Chautauqua Opera Company, Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Symphony, Cedar Fair Entertainment, Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca, Lafayette Ballet Theatre, and the Saint Louis Symphony.

This group of visionary artists, thinkers, and doers joins with Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony to chart a new course of experimentation by collaborating on new ideas, breaking conventional rules, and creating unique and powerful experiences.
