Welcome to the first issue of Invigorate Manningham’s new seasonal health and lifestyle magazine with all the latest news on sport and recreation, health and wellbeing.

Including a mix of new initiatives, programs, events, activities and volunteer stories from Council and the community, the magazine is a combination of the previous Rec Wrap and Live Well Manningham newsletters.

The magazine has been developed following consultation with the community on what they would like to see as part of Invigorate. The feedback received showed that respondents wanted to see information on new initiatives (76 per cent), profiles of local organisations and clubs (71 per cent), grant and funding opportunities (59 per cent), updates on local volunteers (57 per cent) and inclusive programs for our diverse community (56 per cent). Feedback also showed that 82 per cent of respondents would like to see a regular directory of services, clubs and activities, which is planned for the Autumn 2016 issue.

Hard copies of Invigorate will be available at the Manningham Civic Centre and in libraries and neighbourhood houses across Manningham. To subscribe to receive Invigorate via email, visit www.manningham.vic.gov.au/invigorate

Live Well in Bulleen is a new community strengthening project which uses a place based approach to improve local services, liveability and infrastructure.

What contributes to the liveability of place? Feedback received from Bulleen residents in 2014 showed that opportunities for social connection, the quality of the local environment, education and health provision, and local access to services, cultural activities and transport are important drivers of healthy communities.

As part of the Live Well in Bulleen project, Council is supporting a suite of new local initiatives in partnership with community service organisations. Some of these initiatives include:

• The Hub @ Ajani, which brings together a variety of community services such as Doncare, Onemda, Eastern Community Legal Centre, Whitehorse Manningham Libraries and Manningham Community Health Services every Thursday to deliver a variety of community activities and services in the Living and Learning @ Ajani Centre.

• Cafe @ Ajani, a pop up cafe that is run by a team of students with a disability as part of Onemda’s LEAP program. To support the program, drop in on a Thursday from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm for a coffee and a chat.

For more information on these projects, call Christine Mountford from Living and Learning @ Ajani on 9852 4613 or email [email protected]

For more information of the Live Well in Bulleen project, call Rob Ball on 9840 9379 or email [email protected]

Get active and improve your fitness with the new series of free outdoor exercise equipment installed at Ted Ajani Reserve in Lower Templestowe, Koonung Park in Bulleen and Jenkins Park in Templestowe.

A partnership project between Council and the Victorian Government, the new equipment is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Some of the equipment at Ted Ajani Reserve (pictured left) has been designed by physiotherapists, specifically for older adults, and aims to improve balance, hand eye co-ordination, shoulder, wrist and finger movements and hip flexibility.

Kids getting around safely on their ownWould you like your children to become more independent? Walking and riding to school and around the neighbourhood enables children to develop independence while increasing their physical activity.

VicHealth has developed a practical guide to help parents support their children to safely travel and play outside independently as they grow. The guide, How to help your kids get around safely on their own, offers a range of tips on how to help your child gain independence. To download the guide, visit www.vichealth.vic.gov.au/media-and-resources/publications/parental-fears

Council’s Active Travel Program encourages children to travel independently by helping families develop greater social connectedness with school and the local community. To find out more about the program, visit www.manningham.vic.gov.au/active-travel-program

A friendlier community for people with dementiaOn Wednesday 2 December, Manningham Council in partnership with Alzheimer’s Australia Victoria launched an exciting new initiative, “Inclusive Manningham: A Dementia Friendly City”.

The new project will identify ways we can become a dementia-friendly city and how we, as a community, can create positive changes to ensure people living with dementia are more included in everyday life.

Statistics for Manningham show a growing prevalence of people living with dementia, which often impacts not only the individual, but also their family and friends. Dementia may impact younger as well as older people and can often affect up to three in ten people over the age of 85.

The initial stages of the project include a community survey to better understand the local need, the development of a Manningham Local Dementia Alliance Group including representation from people living with dementia and/or their carers, local traders, community organisations, service clubs, and sporting bodies and the development of a local action plan to guide the future direction of the project.

For a copy of the Expression of Interest form for the Alliance Group or to participate in the survey, visit www.yoursaymanningham.com.au/dementia-friendly

The survey closes on Friday 26 February 2016. For more information, call 9840 9700.
