Umjindi receives much-needed boost in health careRichard Nkosi

The residents of Umjindi will have two more health-care centres thanks to Barberton Mines.

Essie Esterhuizen, Barberton Mines human resource manager said Barberton Mines was committed to the socio-economic development of its mining community, hence it has pledged to construct two small eight-hour community clinics in Umjindi.

Esterhuizen said this last Thursday at the

Umjindi Chamber Hall during the signing of the agreement.

Among those who attended the event were Umjindi executive mayor Cll Lazaros Mashaba, MEC for health Gillion Mashego and councillors. “In line with our five-year approved social and labour plan and as part of the legislative requirement of Section 2 (i) of the Mineraland Petroleum Resources Development Act which reads; “ensure that holders of mining and production rights contribute towards the socio-economic development of the areas in which they are operating”, we (Barberton Mines)

have followed all necessary community stakeholder consultative processes during the identification and approval of our five-year developmental plan, which is directly linked to the community’s needs as it mentioned in the Umjindi Municipality’s IDP,” he said.

Esterhuizen said the community of Emjindini Trust and Barberton/Umjindi is in dire need of adequate clinic infrastructures.

“Barberton Mines heard of the need through the consultative processes and later adopted and pledged to construct two new clinics; which are Renee Clinic at Emjindini

Trust and Cathyville Clinic where Umjindi Municipality’s council deem suitable. Thank you to my corporate social investment team, Ehlanzeni District office of the Department of Health, clinic committees of both clinics, Umjindi Local Municipality and Emjindini Traditional Authority for the significant role they played throughout, which led to today’s gathering. Chief Kenneth Nkosi donated free and suitable land to the community for the construction of Renee Clinic at Emjindini Trust,” added Esterhuizen.

He said the construction and funding release of both clinics will run concurrently, in three phases/financial years, commencing in July. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of June 2019. On completion of both clinics, Barberton Mines will hand them over to the Mpumalanga Department of Health for usage and public service.

“That will not be the end of our relationship, and if another need for a clinic arises in our community and if our funding permits, we will gladly participate, but that will be in our next five-year cycle plan, which is after 2019,” said Esterhuizen.

Mashaba said on behalf of the council and the community of Umjindi, they appreciated such a donation from Barberton Mines. “Their part of their social responsibility to build health-care facility will assist this community in a great deal and this project is included in the IDP of the municipality. As the government we appreciate the private sector’s involvement in uplifting our communities with such facilities,” said Mashaba.

Barberton Mines also donated three television sets to Barberton TB Specialised Hospital.

Klein Adrian Swanepoel stel baie belang in mamma Bernadine se kos. Daar was meer as genoeg kos vir almal.

Malinda sê: “Die Here was goed vir Barberton vandag.

OPINION6 Barberton Times Wednesday June 29, 2016

Municipality replies to the Rimers Creek sagaIn Barberton Times of June 22, Edwin Sturgeon wrote an open letter to Umjindi Municipality, regarding the ongoing Rimers Creek saga.Below is the response from the municipality:

We acknowledge and respect the fact that every person is entitled to his or her own opinion.

Although it is the municipality’s policy not to respond to allegations and rumours and unfounded statements, we have decided to respond so as not to create the perception that the municipality has something to hide in as far as this matter is concerned.

We fi nd it strange that despite the fact that Mr Sturgeon - a respected senior citizen - has already on more than one occasion, offi cially and unoffi cially, requested information which he was given access to, he continued to publish this open letter. We can come to no other conclusion than that he is dissatisfi ed with and does not like the answers he got and now wants to lure the municipality into a public debate in the media. Apparently with the expectation that it would result in gaining support from the community at large to force this matter in a direction he wants it to go.

Up to today, the municipality has not been offi cially notifi ed by any competent authority that it has transgressed any

legislative requirements regarding that development. In fact, the municipality had to submit a comprehensive report on all these and related allegations, to the various offi ces of higher authority because of similar allegations lodged with those offi ces. We are aware that the allegations were investigated, but to date we have had no reaction from these authorities at all.

This confi rms that even they were satisfi ed that the municipality is not guilty of any misconduct, unless if they are also, and we quote from Mr Sturgeons letter, “covering up what is wrong”.

We have no doubt that it is not the case. It needs to be mentioned that it came to our notice that Mr Sturgeon even went as far as to lay a criminal charge at the SAPS for non-compliance with certain legislative requirements. Those allegations have, to the best of our knowledge, been investigated and were rejected as having no grounds for successful prosecution.

The municipality has spent a lot of time and manpower in trying to assist Mr Sturgeon and other aggrieved parties in this matter, which now seems to have been wasted judging by the tone and content of this letter.

In view of this it is obvious that this matter does not warrant any further deliberation by the municipality in a forum such as this.

Letters must be addressed to the editor at 72 Crown Street Barberton, 1300 or faxed to 013-712-6638 or emailed to [email protected]. Letters must be limited to 200 words and the editor reserves the right to edit and shorten. A writer may use the pseudonym but full details and telephone numbers must accompany the letter in order to by published.

Enige belangstellendes is meer as welkom. Navrae: Herman Bosua by 083-425-0408.

It is never easy to say goodbye so I will be brief.

My fi ve years as editor of Barberton Times were challenging as well as rewarding. I wish to say thank you to the people of this offi ce who were my right hand, in particular Richard Nkosi and Hannelie Janse van Rensburg.

You became family and were the only people who knew me through and through and stood by me through the good and the bad.

To everyone in town who was always there to lend a helping hand, give

information and good advice - you made my life so much more pleasant.

Barberton Times will continue to be on the streets every Wednesday, but sadly the offi ce in 72 Crown Street will close its doors on June 30.

I want to leave the community with the following words of Carl Gustav Yung - take it to heart and make sure that you often look inside, because only then will you be able to see and appreciate the bigger picture, “Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.”

Young soccer player gets a chance of a lifetimeRichard Nkosi

Here is Lankie Khoza from Barberton who jetted off to France yesterday (first in the front row). With him are Likhanye Ndlende, Rebaone Sebaco, Heraipha Marumo, Mandla Mokoena, (back) Yvone Mnisi, Zaba Nxumalo, Siyabonga Mkhwanazi, Fetsi Mbele, Patricia Brown, Kagiso Khulu and Leathan Croats.

A budding local soccer player, Lankie Khoza (16) jetted off to France yesterday (Tuesday) where he will get a chance to share the field with former Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez as part of the Copa Coca-Cola Global camp.

Khoza, who plays for Barcelona 2022 Football Academy locally, is among seven youngsters from South Africa, who travelled to the home of the ongoing Uefa Euro 2016 tournament to test their skills against the rest of the world.

Khoza was selected when he caught the eyes of selectors at the Under-15 Copa Coca-Cola National Finals in 2015 held at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal.

He played for his school St Mark’s, which represented Mpumalanga.

The camp in Paris is expected to start today (Wednesday June 28) and ends on July 4.

During the players’ stay, they will be trained by coaches from Paris Saint-Germany Academy. The camp also focuses on life-skill development and promotion of friendship. The young players are also expected to watch one of the Uefa Euro 2016 quarter-finals in France, while they are there.

In a telephone interview with Barberton Times on Monday evening, an excited Khoza said he was looking forward to fly for the first time in his life.

“This is a dream come true for me. It will

be the first time I board a plane and my first time away from South Africa.

I’m looking forward to use the opportunity afforded to me and gain more experience,” said Khoza.

His coach at Barcelona 2022 Academy, Lungile “Mambush” Mokone, said they were proud of Khoza’s achievement and hope that his successes will rub off on his fellow teammates.

“Lankie is one of the most talented youngsters we have at Barcelona 2022 Academy. He was marvelous when we

won the Umjindi Development Mayoral Cup and also did wonders in Nkomazi when we clinched the Ehlanzeni District Municipalities mayoral cup. He deserves to be where he is and I hope that his success will serve as a motivation to his teammates,” said Mambush.

“The teens attending will have the opportunity to gain skills, enjoy new experiences with new international friends and even meet and learn from a FIFA World Cup champion, Xavi Hernandez,” said Coca-Cola South Africa’s senior

communications manager, Fetsi Mbele. The other players who are with Khoza

in Paris are Siyabonga Mkhwanazi (Bophelong Impilo Community School), Leathan Croats (Mandale High School), Mandla Mokoena (Zacheus Maleka High School), Likhanye Ndlende (Clapham High School), Zaba Nxumalo (Clapham High School), Kagiso Khulu (Sol Plaatjies High School) and Rebaone Sebaco (Kimberly Technical High school). On Monday evening attempts to get hold of Khoza for comment before his departure were fruitless.

Since as early as Friday afternoon, the skies above Barberton were once again occupied by brightly coloured paragliders.

The air raid was part of the build-up to the annual paragliding championships which commenced on Sunday. This year there were 74 entries, many of them international pilots. The competition will continue throughout the week with the prize-giving taking place on Saturday afternoon at Jathira.

Andrea Botha from Barberton Odyssey discouraged people from making big fi res for the duration of the competition as these would obstruct the view and put the pilots’ lives in danger.

She also requested that Barbertonians be on the lookout for paragliders as they do not always have a choice about where they land. “Should you pick up a pilot, please report their name and number at once otherwise we would have sent out recovery vehicles for nothing. I can be contacted on 079-180-1488,” said Botha.

Astrid Christianson from Barberton Tourism conveyed a big thank you to Westvaal Barberton for lending a helping hand with recovery vehicles. She also thanked all the locals as well as media for their involvement and willingness to promote this event.

Botha and Christianson invited the townspeople to show their support by visiting the golf club.

For any information on the competition, contact Botha on 079-180-1488 or Christianson on 082-959-6670.
