Human Development Index (2010 - 2015) in selected regions in Indonesia

More than 40% North Sumatran are employed in the agriculture and fisheries sector. Whilst, 21% are in the retail and tourism businesses –suggesting that the region still relies on the traditional sectors.

Meantime, employment in the manufacturing and construction sectors only make up 13% when combined. North Sumatra will need more value-added investments, for example, those in the processing sector, in order to drive up the region’s human development index – as reflected above, still amongst the lowest.
