WHAT IS 12JSection 12J refers to a section in the South African Income Tax Act which provides a tax incentive for individuals, trusts and companies who invest in a SARS approved Venture Capital Company (VCC). Investors can claim a 100% deduction against their taxable income in the year in which the investment is made.

There has been exponential growth within 12J as more individuals and companies are allocating capital to

this maturing asset class.

Mafika holds two Bachelor degrees in Applied Mathematics and Science Electrical Engineering. He has served as CEO as well as the Non-Executive Chairman of Transnet, Chairman of Letseng Diamonds and Non-Executive Director of Nedbank. He was also previously a Non-Executive director for Eskom, Stefanutti, and Stocks and the Non-Executive Chairman of Hulamin. He is currently a Non-Executive Director of MSC South Africa and is directly involved in 1 EPCM specialising in photovoltaic electricity and Renewable Energy Systems as well as being indirectly involved in a Wind Energy through Resolux Africa.

Jeff holds a B.Com B.Acc CA, specialising in Accountancy and Finance and with over 30 years of investment experience, is a member of the sub-committee of SAVCA. He is a start-up specialist, having founded and sold numberous companies that include Brandcorp, KNR Flatrock, Balboa Finance, Born Free Properties, Eurosuit, Bride & Co, Redwood Capital and Seed Engine.

Doug is Chairman of “The Smollan Group” which employs roughly 79 000 people and has a presence in 5 continents and 60 countries. He was Founding Member and Chairman of Business Against Crime (“BAC’), Gauteng in 1997 and in 2000. He was also the Founding Member and is currently on the Board of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa Anti-Crime initiative since 2000 which is in its 19th year and has a registration of all retailers and manufacturers in

South Africa.

Elekanyani is a qualified engineer; she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town. She is professionally registered (Pr. Eng.) with the Engineering Council of South Africa and is a Member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers. Has worked for the likes of Sasol, Eskom, Pele Energy Group and Aurecon. Where she held various directorships and roles most notably being the director responsible for the Energy market across the African market for Aurecon. She is also a member of Phato Investment Cooperative. Her experience in the energy sector includes petro-chemical, large scale infrastructure, refurbishment and green field renewable energy projects. It also includes project engineering, project management, project finance and business development with a power generation background.

Avi has significant commercial experience at various levels within organisations. He studied financial accounting and is completing his MBA. With a passion for investments and Renewable Energy, his main focus is the setting up of appropriate channels through which to raise

further capital.
