NATURAL RESOURCES INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES IDENTIFICATION, ECOLOGY AND CONTROL CONTINUING STUDIES unbc.ca/continuing_studies This course will enable pesticide/herbicide applicators, utility arborists, certified fallers, brushers, highway maintenance workers, power transmission line contractors, parks staff and others employed in the natural resource sector to identify invasive plant species and implement Best Management Practices in order to mitigate their spread during field operations. Learning Objectives: Identify invasive plant species in British Columbia Identify their current known distribution and abundance Understand basic invasive plant autoecology (habitat, reproduction, dispersal mechanisms) Understand how invasive plant species respond to disturbance Identify best control methods for invasive plants within the region Learn Best Management Practices to reduce the introduction and spread (vehicle and equipment checks, disposal, re-vegetation, weed-free seed, weed-free straw, etc.) Learn appropriate infestation reporting methods Instructor: Andrea Eastham is a Professional Agrologist and the Program Manager for the Northwest Invasive Plant Council (NWIPC). The NWIPC developed as a committee in 1992 and a not-for-profit organization in 2004 with the goal of preventing further damage to the ecosystems of the northwest and central B.C. from invasive alien plants. This one-day workshop will have both a classroom and field component. Instructor: Andrea Eastham, P. Ag.
