DAVID BRAY Creating a Musical School978-0-19-335588-0

This thought-provoking book looks at two years in the life of the UK’s first Specialist Music College, the Northampton School for Girls, and sets its development in the wider context of ‘musical’ schools. Bray challenges the reader to think hard about the issues surrounding music provision in schools and to help develop their practice. Foreword by Howard Goodall.

The author, an acknowledged expert, draws on and discusses the practical application of a range of theoretical and philosophical research, encouraging a holistic approach and focused teacher-intervention.

JANET MILLS Instrumental Teaching978-0-19-335908-6

Instrumental Teaching seeks to help teachers teach in a manner that is true to the nature of music and what musicians do – in other words, to teach musically. This thought-provoking and inspiring book draws on the findings of research and on the author’s wealth of experience to encourage teachers to build upon the strengths of current practice.

‘Readers will find Mills’s lucid, frank presentation of facts – as well as her conclusions – revealing and at times alarming. . . this is an extremely useful compendium on this under-researched subject.’

JANET MILLS Music in the School978-0-19-322303-5

How do some schools get music so right while others get it so wrong? Janet Mills draws on her work in more than 800 schools and on published research as she seeks to help schools improve their practice – no matter how good it is already. Successful teaching, she argues, is creative, uplifting, enabling, and, above all, rooted in music.

‘Music in the School is a stimulating book that should be read by all involved in music education’

Music Teacher

‘ typically provocative and thought-provoking . . . Mills is a voice that simply cannot be ignored.’
