The function of an intumescent coating is to delay steel members from reaching various critical steel temperatures above 500ºC at which they collapse after a given period of time.

This enables people to evacuate buildings and creates a time window facilitating the Fire Bridge to enter the building to search for and assist any trapped persons and begin to fight the fire

Three main stages in the evolution of building fires: 1. Ignition 2. Growth by flame spread 3. The ratio of perimeter length to cross-sectional area is termed Hp/A. The greater the value of Hp/A the faster the rate of heating of the section and since the purpose of the intumescent is to delay the rate of heating of the steel, the coating thickness increases with higher Hp/A values. Hp/A = =

DFTs range from approximately 300 µm for 30 min. protection of a massive beam (Hp/A = Low) To > 3000 µm for 120 min. protection of a fragile beam (Hp/A = High)

The fire protection performance is not affected by natural ageing, provided that - System correctly applied - maintenance control scheme - any damages repaired - should last for the lifetime of the building……
