77 VALVES AND ACCESSORIES
Introduction to MESC Group 77.
1. INTRODUCTION
Valves specified in group 77 cover most types and sizes required for the group's field, refinery, chemical plant and utility piping systems, coherent with 'tubulars' and 'fittings'specified in MESC groups 74 and 76 respectively.
Valves for special applications are coded in their relevant groups, e.g.:
- group 09, wellhead valves- group 44, valves for LPG cylinders- group 60, solenoid valves and control valves for process instrumentation- group 61, vacuum and pressure relief valves for tanks- group 80, valves for sanitary requirements- group 90, valves for laboratory use
In these groups the different types of valves are grouped together in alphabeticalorder, with the main body material and end connections at sub-group level followed bya breakdown per material type for the trim and service application at sub-sub grouplevel.
Valve additional requirements are presented in section 5.
They reflect latest Shell policies and piping class requirements as well as presentcapabilities of valve manufacturers.
Additional requirements which were used together with locally coded (dot 9) valveshave been removed, i.e.:- SPE 77/132 for regular/full opening swing check valves to API 6D,- SPE 77/163 for axial disc check valves to ASME B 16.34,- SPE 77/164 for pressure balance piston shut-off valves,- SPE 77/210 for valves in sub-sea service.
For detailed information refer to section five - Introduction to additional requirements.
2. VALVE SELECTION
For guidance in selecting the appropriate valves for any particular service, referenceis made to 'design and engineering practice' publications DEP 31.38.01.12-gen andDEP 31.38.01.15-gen.
These valves are incorporated in the MESC database.
3. VALVE TYPES
3.1 ANGLE VALVESThe application of angle type globe valves is not recommended and they havetherefore not been included as a group standard with the exception of small size
needle type globe valves for instrumentation purposes.

MESC ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT Revision: 13- Apr- 2005.
INT 77 / 001 Page 2 of 8.
3.2 BALL VALVESBall valves are compact, have a positive shut-off and are easy to operate andmaintain. They are available as 'soft seated' and 'metal seated' valves, both with'reduced' and 'full' bore.
A disadvantage of soft-seated ball valves is the restricted temperature rating becauseof the polymers and elastomer seats and seals.Metal-seated valves shall be used for temperature ranges exceeding the rangesspecified for soft-seated valves.
3.3 CAST-IRON AND DUCTILE IRON VALVESFor safety reasons cast-iron valves shall not be used. A limited range of lined butterfly, diaphragm, ball and check valves with bodymaterials made of ductile iron ion are included in MESC.
3.4 CHECK VALVESCheck valves DN40 and smaller shall be of the ball type or piston type.Check valves DN50 and larger shall be of the swing type or dual-plate type.
3.5 GATE VALVES AND GLOBE VALVESGate and globe (needle type) valves in the sizes DN40 and smaller are specifiedin EN ISO 15761. Globe (plug/ball type) valves are not available in sizes larger than DN 300.
3.6 HIGH PERFORMANCE BUTTERFLY VALVESHigh performance butterfly valves (HPBV) are included as an alternative to gate andball valves, since lug and single flange HPBV offer space and weight savings. Theyare available as 'soft seated’, ‘metal/soft' and 'metal seated'.The recommended body styles are double flanged, lug and single flange.
3.7 PLUG VALVESThe selection and use of plug valves (i.e. pressure balanced and sleeve types)and double plug isolation valves shall follow the requirements of the DEP manuals.
3.8 PRESSURE SEAL VALVESGate, globe and check valves with a pressure seal type bonnet/cover connectionoffers in-line maintainability as well as reduced weight (compared with flangedbody/bonnet connections).Pressure seal type valves shall be used for steam services in the ASME pressureratings 900 to 2500.
3.9 SLIM LINE GATE AND GLOBE VALVESGate and globe valves with a slim line body are single flanged and available in the
size range DN50 and smaller with a minimum pressure rating of ASME class 300. Inthe higher-pressure ratings they offer space and weight savings as compared to thetraditional valves. However, these valves are not yet available in MESC.
4 VALVE DETAILS
4.1 BY-PASSES
A by-pass, when necessary, shall be fitted locally. If valves shall be supplied completewith by-pass this shall be clearly specified in the requisition and/or purchase order.
4.2 FLANGES
Valves shall be supplied with drilled flanges as specified in the MESC buyingdescriptions.

4.3 FINISH OF FLANGE FACINGS
Flanged valves shall be executed with a smooth flange surface finish
(Ra 3.2-6.3 µm), unless otherwise specified in the MESC buying description.
4.4 OUTSIDE AND INSIDE SCREW STEM TYPE VALVES
Valves with outside screw stem (gate and globe) are the preferred standard for thegroup.
4.5 SPARE PARTS FOR VALVES
Spare parts for both valves and valve actuators shall be coded locally in sub groups77.90 to 77.99. Valve actuators shall be coded in sub group 77.88.
4.6 FIRE-TESTED OR FIRE-SAFE DESIGNS
Normally fire safe or fire-tested valves shall be used. When valves have limitations, this shall be clearly addressed and these valves shall not be used in locations thatmay be exposed to a fire hazard.
5. INTRODUCTION TO ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
5.1 The additional requirements (SPE’s) reflect the latest Shell policy and piping-classrequirements as well as the present capabilities of manufacturers.
For valves the following categories of additional requirements (SPE’s) are available:
A Additional requirements to the 'individual' valve design codes, e.g. BS, API, ASME.
B Requirements unique to a specific service.
C Requirements that cover testing, painting and coating.
D Requirements for sealing materials (gaskets, packing, O-rings).

5.2.7 Example:
A MESC description calls for mandatory additional requirements:SPE 77/102, SPE 77/200, SPE 77/302, SPE 77/306, SPE 77/312 and SPE 85/103.
This means ‘CATEGORIES’:
A B C D
Whenever deviated from centrally coded standard buying descriptions and/or additional
requirements, the unique (dot 1) MESC number(s) shall not be used anymore and thePrincipal shall create locally coded (dot 9) MESC number(s) instead.
However, as a good policy, adherence to the available standard description is essential toobtain the full benefits of standardisation and procurement co-ordination.
