Introductions
How to increase attainment in Physical Education for children in care
Guess Who?
“You need to go to lessons so we get paid… it doesn’t matter if you don’t do the work because you aren’t going to
pass anyway.” “Why would I help you? I didn’t think you wanted to learn?! My time is better spent with the students
who can achieve in this class.”
Guess Who?
“This young person is unlikely to achieve. They are disruptive and challenging. There is nothing we can do for them. Excluded in year
7.”

“This young person is extremely stubborn. She openly expresses her
opinions and will throw things at people she doesn’t like. However she is extremely well behaved at school and doesn’t like social services to be
involved.”

Key Messages
Get to know your Looked After Children and Care Leavers – We are not all the same, we have different needs, know your cohort to best
serve them
Minimize Disruption –How does it make you feel? How can a child concentrate when there is
disruption? Help resolve the disruption and the education will fall into place
Challenge the stereotypes – We can achieve, our actions as children and our situations should not
dictate the attitudes about our ‘achievements’ by the adults around us
What can you do as a VSH?
• Involve care leavers in statutory training of staff/teachers
• Regular celebration of achievements • Listen and act on the issues in your area• Listen and act on the national issues
• Make a pledge on our board outside
Education is the number one priority for you, but
