A Comparative Study of Thomasians’ Patronization of Selected Canteensand Fast Food Chains around UST

INTRODUCTION

Everyday, as observable as it seems, Thomasians encounter a dilemma

regarding the place to eat during their break or dismissal time. This led the group

to formulate and develop the comparative study of Thomasians’ patronization of

selected canteens and fast food chains around the university. With this, every

student can easily evaluate and choose the better option depending on their

preferences.

A quick service restaurant is commonly known today as fast food

restaurant. This is a restaurant category characterized by its minimal table

service and fast food cuisine and preparation. Food served in quick service

restaurants is considered "meat-sweet diet" and is in a limited menu typically

posted by the counter. The food is cooked in bulk, in advance, and kept hot. It is

packed subsequently and made ready to be taken out of the restaurant, though

most stores offer seats for the diners. Fast food restaurants are usually part of a

chain or franchise operation which provides standardized ingredients and/or

partially prepared foods and supplies to each restaurant through controlled

supply channels. Among these fast food chains are Jollibee, located at Dapitan

Street., and McDonalds, located at UST's Multideck Carpark Ground Floor and

along A.H. Lacson Street.

A canteen, on the other hand, is known as a carinderia or "turo-turo"

wherein customers point their choice from the wide variety of viands offered by

the store. Canteens are usually found in busy crossroads and metro centric

places to serve as breathing space and cater the demands of travellers and

passersby. Since then, canteens have already evolved, adapting to the changing

needs of Filipinos. Among the latest innovations of canteen owners are the so-

called roving canteen and some higher classes of canteen like Ate Eva's and

Bianca's located at UST's Multideck Carpark Ground Floor.

A comparison and distinction between canteens and fast food chains

intends to provide information to future entrepreneurs on which field would they

want to focus on. It aims to determine which is more profitable based on the

preference of most Thomasians. And it also aims to discuss the qualities

students usually consider when choosing between the two types of food

providers.

The comparative study will be limited only to the canteens and fast food

chains around UST while the output of the study will be based on the information

provided by only by Thomasian respondents and some food store owners.

Throughout the study, the group would want to answer the following

questions:

1. Which between canteens and fast food chains do Thomasians patronize

more?

2. Among the factors that students consider, is health the top-most priority when

choosing the place and food to eat?

3. What are the similarities and differences, and strengths and weaknesses of

canteens and fast food chains?
