One more rule: Remember, Google is forever*

• Remember: think twice before you send, post or tweet.

• Jeff Cox not only lost his job, but the circumstances of his dismissal – posting a tweet on Twitter that got him fired -- will show up whenever anyone searches on his name in Google, Bing or Yahoo for years to come.

*and so are Facebook, Twitter, your blog, your comment on other people’s blogs, etc., etc.

The three most important social media are blogs, Facebook and Twitter

• Blog – a website containing your posts

• Facebook – a website containing brief posts by people you select

• Twitter – a website containing very brief posts (140 characters) by people you select

“Web log” “blog”

You’ve also seen these… • RSS – Really Simple

Syndication or Rich Site Summary – click it to subscribe to a Web page and you’ll receive an alert about every change or addition to the page

• CAPTCHA: – On sites that accept

information or “uploads” from users; e.g., registration forms.

– A program that protects websites against automated software programs.

– Makes the user take a tiny test that humans can pass but computer programs cannot.

RSS button. Click it to set up delivery of a Web page’s new content to your email inbox or blog reader.

A CAPTCHA program generates distorted text that computers can’t read.

A blog is a non-private journal on the Web

• A blogger writes posts for a blog • Personal, business, educational, or whatever. • Posts appear in reverse chronological order. • Each post is followed by a comment field. • You can invite people to view your blog. • But anyone who finds your blog can see your

posts and your readers’ comments.

Started as a name-and-photo directory of Harvard students. Now >600 million members (>22% of everyone on the Internet) and growing 5% a month. Why: Keep up with people you care about. How: Post updates about yourself by adding text and photos. Link to articles, chat with other FB members, invite people to events. But work carefully through privacy settings. You answer as many questions about yourself as you feel comfortable sharing: your name contact information relationship status favorite music maybe a few photos Then you search for friends, past or present. When they accept your friend invitations, you can now see their Facebook pages and they can see yours. Why you’d bother: Facebook is great for sharing news, photos and videos with people who might care. Also for finding long-lost friends; for joining groups that support various causes or interests; for sending messages; and for playing games with each other (FarmVille, Mafia Wars). Why not: Facebook keeps making policy and programming blunders that expose personal information to other Web sites. Also lets its advertisers place ads on the pages of very targeted members: divorced 45-year-olds in Texas, for example. Similar: MySpace (a teenage and pre-teenage crowd, heavily focused on pop music and do-it-yourself page designs), Bebo and many others. Post messages of no more than 140 characters on your Twitter home page. Go to the Twitter home page of a person or organization and subscribe to their “tweets” by becoming a “follower.” Learn about a spontaneous protest, comment on news, or find out your best friend is in the bathroom. Post by sending a text on your cell phone or by typing into the site from your computer. Watch topics listed under Trends on your home page to see what people are talking about at any time. Set up lists—of food bloggers, say—that you can access for more targeted info. But for extra privacy, allow only those you approve to see your posts. Make sure you know if the location-based feature is off or on. For smartphones: Foursquare, Gowalla and others reveal your location.

• Use your smart phone to reveal your location to people you choose. – People who are connected

to you via Twitter, Facebook or other sites.

– Also see what friends are nearby.

• But you're also telling those people that you're not home.

Should you go steady or play the field?

• Every social media site wants to be your “home.” – The more visitors and return visits they have, the

more money they can charge advertisers – Visiting several sites every day or week takes time,

but exposes you to more content. – Visiting just one or two large sites regularly saves

time, but limits the scope and variety of content you see.
