Siltstone

Shallowing upwards

• “Facies adjacent to each other in a continuous vertical sequence also accumulated laterally”

• This only applies within parasequences, because it cannot apply to a section with unconformities

Parasequence analysis

• Interpret your section: identify the parasequences and parts (lower, middle, upper) of one parasequence

• Find bed thicknesses for the whole parasequence and for each part (lower, middle, upper)

• Interpret your results: What is the sedimentation history?

I am also not sure about calculating deposition time/sedimentation rate. My understanding has always been that this is fairly hard. I suppose there are some relative times that could be inferred based on the type of deposit it is - i.e. fine muds accumulate more slowly than nearshore delta sands...Where did you get this text?Another question I had when seeing just the text here is what the students are supposed to be refering to? A handout of strat column?
Katherine Shervais
This is based on the assignment hadnout that Bruce gives students. He has an explanatory page before the assignment that details sequence strat to some extent, but he never explains how to calculate the sedimentation rate!
