Local Data Landscape

• In all likelihood, your library is not the only organization involved in research data management on your campus.


• They can be….– On campus– In your region– National– International


• And they can be….– Academic– Governmental– Private sector


• There are two main levels where this landscape will affect what service offerings you currently have:– Practitioner (service) level– Administrative (sustainability) level


Practitioner Perspective

• Internal to your institution:– Other departments• Office of Research, Campus Computing

– Your department• Existing data libraries, computing centers

– Users


Practitioner Perspective

• External to your institution:– Collaborative programs• Some things are hard to do solo

– Non-institutionally-based organizations• Field repositories, etc.


Administrative Perspective

• Items to consider from a library administrative perspective

• Drawn from ARL E-Science workshop • Internal to institution• External to institution• Describe current situation


Issues: Internal

• How important is growing the research enterprise to your institution in terms of strategic priorities?

• Who are the institutional stakeholders on campus? IT, Office Research, Deans, individual faculty, institutional policy, etc.

• What disciplines are preeminent in terms of research on campus?

• How are resources spread across programs, faculties, schools, depts, etc.?


• What problems exist today with managing research data

• How collaborative are ties between academic units and can these be “early wins” by focusing on them and getting more visible successes?


• What conversations have taken place between library administration and university administration to get the library involved in this work?

• Who are the initial stakeholders to talk to, and in what order have they been approached? ie. Provost, Office of Research, Associate Deans (Research & Computing), individual research institutes, etc.


• Where are the strengths in your own library staff and librarians, in terms of connectivity to academic programs and departments that are research-intensive?

• Experience with geospatial, census, DLI, ICSPR, etc. serves as story that the Library can tell to rest of campus in terms of reusing tools, approaches, expertise that the Library is now ready to have a role in planning/mgmt research data


Administrative Perspective: External

• What areas of research are currently more amenable to producing research at this point in time?

• What disciplines currently need the most help with data management planning and curation?

• Are there disciplinary tools/communities/repositories for research data management/planning or are there unmet needs for your researchers?


• Tri-Councils: what areas of research are currently being successful in funding requests to Tri-Councils?

• Private/other: are there areas of research that private organizations/commercial sector/foundations have been interested in advancing, either as contracts or grants?
