FORGIVE THEM BECAUSE THEY DON`T KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise:

We weren’t surprised by the number of different data services we could offer but by the fact that despite their strategic importance, we do not receive requests (yet) for those services from our faculty members…

Why is it surprising?

It is surprising to think that those needs don’t exist… Build it and they will come?

WHAT`S A POLICY ALREADY?

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us mostwhile doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: no evidence of organized RDM practices or policies at the university level

Why is it surprising?Even if the library doesn’t do it, one would have expected the university’s Research office to at least mention it

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: The University lacks policies/procedures regarding the management of research data.

Why is it surprising? Because some other universities do have policies.

Notre plus grande surprise lors de l’activité d’évaluation des services…

La surprise: Pas vraiment de surprise – No real surprises

Pourquoi est-ce une surprise? We know we have the expertise, but no infrastructure or

institutional politics to back it up.Nous savons que nous avons l’expertise mais pas

d’infrastrucutre ou de politique institutionnelle pour nous supporter.

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: Extent of research data management servicescurrently offered

Why is it surprising? It is surprising because it is not clearly indicated that

these services are available (limited promotion internally within library and externally within university).

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: Our Copyright Advisory Group has an initial draft of a

Data Governance guide for the Copyright FAQ.

Why is it surprising? That copyright compliance work is what drove the

creation of this data management piece.

The surprise: We knew we were doing a lot but didn't realize the extent of services available.

Why is it surprising? We're approaching this project expecting to provide new services, but the existing legacy is very complex. Our legendary data librarian already handles subsetting, etc., for many databases.

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: That we have access/subscriptions to major data providers. Most of the information was new to us, so we would consider most of the answers surprising!

Why is it surprising? We don’t use these providers and have not had students requesting this type of information. We haven’t been very involved in data management and are excited to learn more during this workshop.

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: That we’re doing nothing for preservation

Why is it surprising? Arguably the core value of libraries, although our library does not have a long history of preserving unpublished work. Also surprised that special collections & archives aren’t more prominently involved in RDM generally.

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise:

That we do so much with data yet don’t have formal RDM services.

Why is it surprising?

UofT has some long-standing data service and collection mandates yet we don’t have formal services to support research data management.

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: The complexity of developing a service. We hadn’t contemplated the full

scope that is outlined in the questions.

Why is it surprising?Surprising because we thought we were somewhat knowledgable but the

questions made us realize the all the areas that need to be involved & the difficulties of getting everyone on same page.

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: The breadth of services and activities that can be included in a research data management plan

Why is it surprising? Our institution is on the verge of entering research data management, but I’m not sure if everyone understands the potential scope of this enterprise.

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: We scored significantly lower on preservation than on other services. We provide good access, but apparently only for the short term!

Why is it surprising? We expected that our efforts across service categories would have been more equal. A Digital Preservation Officer was hired just last year, so we anticipate improvements to our score in this area in the near future. Preliminary work on several aspects listed is already currently underway.

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: How many “no” replies we had.

Why is it surprising? As a group we were not surprised per se; however, we know that we

experience an uneven awareness of services on the two campuses (Fton and SJ). Nonetheless even without a formal "research date service" within library systems, we would have expected the Office of the VP Research or Office of Research Services to be promoting many of the activities articulated in the evaluation exercise.

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: The UL is sending a UVic Data Librarian to this workshop.

Why is it surprising? The UVic Libraries has a new University Librarian. New strategic planning, priority setting, and organizational restructuring is being considered. At this point, it has not been revealed what priority will be given to assisting UVic researchers to curate their research data.

WE HAVE RESEARCH DATA?

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: There are six datasets already deposited in our institutional repository.

Why is it surprising?® We are still in the information gathering phase of a data plan.® We have subscriptions to several data services, but beyond that there

are no policies or guidelines when it comes to acquiring datasets or storing faculty research data.

THE TROUBLE(S) WITH DATA...

Page 26: Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013 RDM is surprising.

Introduction to Research Data Management Services, January 2013

The thing that surprised us most while doing the evaluation activity…

The surprise: The existence of barriers to collecting data sets produced by researchers on our campuses. For example, restrictions placed on data by research ethics board approval.

Why is it surprising? While some data sets contain sensitive information, it was surprising that non-sensitive data is often lost due to perceptions that it may be easier to obtain ethics clearance if the researcher agrees to greater restrictions on data preservation than may be necessary.

Biggest Surprise

The surprise: As I filled in the form I became increasingly unsure of the definition of “data”.

Why is it surprising?

We tend to think of data as numeric, but our Fisheries researchers (for example) consider 50TB of raw video of the ocean floor to be their “research data”.
