Page 8: Introduction to Learning Route in Nepal, December 2014

The Learning Route’s main objective is to disseminate best practices and successful strategies for rural livelihoods improvement through gender sensitive natural resource and cooperatives management.

Objective

Page 9: Introduction to Learning Route in Nepal, December 2014

1. Women´s empowerment and gender mainstreaming: women’ involvement in social, economic and financial activities led them firstly to play a leading role at community level and later to cooperatives and other organizations. This exposure is building women´s skills and self-confidence when performing in the public sphere, and is as well improving the gender relations in the households.

2. Diversification of rural livelihoods: Through the promotion of a culture of savings and fair rate loans the cooperatives are encouraging the development of new small rural businesses, both at individual and group level. The scoping activities for new markets are offering new, sustainable and more profitable opportunities to the younger generations to stay in the rural.

4 Thematic Areas

Page 10: Introduction to Learning Route in Nepal, December 2014

3. Innovative solutions in community forestry management: The extended Natural Resource Management best practices promoted by LFLP and PAF were fundamental in recovering the biodiversity of the territories, and therefore, responding better to climate change challenges.

4. Development of member-based microfinance organizations. The consolidation in a country wide network of originally small farmers cooperatives has been the result of the progressive empowerment at village and district level and the smart linkages with financial and non-financial institutions.

4 Thematic Areas

INNOVATION: WHAT’S ALL ABOUT?

Not a completely new idea, it’s new to me (or to the context where I work)

Innovation brings (positive) changes and new ways of doing things, new approaches

It adds value to what I’m already doing

Can bring lessons to others (scaling-up)

It’s based on opportunities already in place
