Consecutive Interpreting Vs. Simultaneous interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting Consecutive Interpreting
1. Interpreter listens to a speech. 2. Does simultaneously while he is
listening. 3. Used when there are numerous
languages needed. 4. Should only be done into one’s A
language. 5. Events with large number of
participants. 6. The interpreter works in sound-proof
booth.
1. Interpreter takes notes while listening.2. Does his\her interpretation during
pauses. 3. Used when there are only two
languages at work. 4. It’s done into the interpreter’s A and B
languages. (it’s a bilateral interpretation- interpreter would interpret in both directions).
5. Events with limited number of participants. (e.g. highly technical meetings, working lunches, small groups, field trips)
6. The interpreter sits or stands beside the source language speakers.

What is the nature of consecutive interpreting practice?
• The main advantage: • Difficulties • Interpreter ethics • Types of consecutive interpreting based on
the length of speech• Well trained interpreters • A glance at its history
![Page 14: Introduction to Consecutive Interpreting Translation and Interpretation Types of Translation and Interpretation Consecutive Interpreting Vs. Simultaneous.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012304/56649ebe5503460f94bc81df/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The main advantage
The mobility that is the possibility of movement of the discussion group
![Page 15: Introduction to Consecutive Interpreting Translation and Interpretation Types of Translation and Interpretation Consecutive Interpreting Vs. Simultaneous.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012304/56649ebe5503460f94bc81df/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Difficulties of Consecutive Interpretation
Necessity of adaptation of the source text to make the it clear for the target audience
Inadmissibility to express the interpreter’s own opinion
![Page 16: Introduction to Consecutive Interpreting Translation and Interpretation Types of Translation and Interpretation Consecutive Interpreting Vs. Simultaneous.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012304/56649ebe5503460f94bc81df/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Interpreter ethics
The interpreter should be playing the role of a mediator (no interfering – no exaggerating – no underestimating)
The interpreter would not afford rendering the speech failure of the speaker
The interpreter would conceal the interlocutor’s confusion
![Page 17: Introduction to Consecutive Interpreting Translation and Interpretation Types of Translation and Interpretation Consecutive Interpreting Vs. Simultaneous.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012304/56649ebe5503460f94bc81df/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Types of consecutive interpreting based on the length of speech
"short CI"
• the interpreter relies on memory, each message segment being brief enough to memorize
"long CI"
• the interpreter takes notes of the message to aid rendering long passages
# These informal divisions are established with the client before the interpretation is effected, depending upon the subject, its complexity, and the purpose of the interpretation
![Page 18: Introduction to Consecutive Interpreting Translation and Interpretation Types of Translation and Interpretation Consecutive Interpreting Vs. Simultaneous.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012304/56649ebe5503460f94bc81df/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Well-trained interpreters: can render speeches of 10
minutes or more with great accuracy at the same time.

A glance at its history
• Consecutive interpretation was the first mode of interpretation widely used at international meetings.
• Some of the finest moments in consecutive interpreting occurred at the time of the Paris Peace Conference and in the meetings of the League of Nations at the end of the World War I.
![Page 20: Introduction to Consecutive Interpreting Translation and Interpretation Types of Translation and Interpretation Consecutive Interpreting Vs. Simultaneous.](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022012304/56649ebe5503460f94bc81df/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
A glance at its history
• The pioneers of this method were Paul Mantoux, Antoine Velleman, Jean Herbert, amongst others.
• By the late 1940s, simultaneous interpretation became the most used method in the meetings of the main bodies of the United Nations.
• Today, staff interpreters provide consecutive interpretation for meetings of Heads of State or high government officials with Secretary-General, Presidents of the Security Council etc.
