• Includes aspects of

History of Athletic Training
• Began late in the nineteenth century with the establishment of intercollegiate and interscholastic sports.
• In the beginning, their techniques included
– “Rub Down”
– Application of counterirritants
– Prescription of home remedies

Evolution of Athletic Training
• Appearance increased (mainly in college) after World War I– Dr. S.E. Bilik wrote The Trainer’s Bible in 1917
• Cramer corporation produced liniment to treat ankle sprains (early 1920s)– Published the First Aider in 1932
• Several ATCs tried to create National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA), but it disappeared during World War II (late 1930s)
• 101 ATs met in Kansas City, Missouri and officially formed NATA (1950)– Primary purpose of NATA was to establish professional
standards for ATs

Sports Medicine
• American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) defined SM as multidisciplinary including
– Physiological,
– Biomechanical
– Psychological
– Pathological phenomena

participation in the form of guidelines or position
statements.
• Goals:
– Set professional standards
– Promote professional meetings to exchange ideas,

• NATA Board of Certification (NATABOC) defined the six base domains that an entry-level AT should possess to work
• Education Council developed twelve competencies that should be taught in any athletic training program
