Course Overview This course will survey the history of art beginning with the Stone Age to the present. Through readings, written assignments and slide lectures, students will become familiar with examples of different types of art. Students will learn about the creative process of artists in order to cultivate an appreciation of the changing technique, materials, and purpose of art making throughout history. They will explore and analyze influential works of art as a way to gain an understanding of the arts as a universal method of communication and expression.

Sketchbook: In this class you will be required to keep a Sketchbook. This can be fun! You can use your sketchbook to take notes in class as well as doodle if that is

not a distraction to you.

Assignments

● Five page essay double spaced. ● 5-10 minute presentation ● Various In sketchbook homeworks ● Group Exhibition project ● Three exams ● One final exam

Essay Options : ● Pick a particular theme in painting, sculpture, craft art, or architecture. OR● Compare and contrast 2 works of art from any time period. OR● Pick a particular artwork that intrigues you from at least five different time periods. OR● Focus on works with a specific function or content from at least five different eras. OR● Select a theme of your choosing using at least five examples to illustrate.● Is there a particular artwork you like or dislike and why?

As you write, trace the topic through various periods of history. Incorporate your knowledge about influences on the making of art-visual, social, political, religious, multicultural, etc. This is an essay about your understanding of what we have covered this semester. It is a way of understanding what you remember and it should be helpful in preparing for your final. It is also a way for the instructor to find out what you have learned. AVOID writing about the subject with non-specific, meaningless phrases that say nothing. Write clearly and legibly. Be serious about this work. Consider it a personal review of what you learned. Paper is provided for the essay.

Presentations:

For your presentation you will have to provide 1 page short essay on your topic. Presentation is due the last 2 weeks before winter break: November 28th through Dec. 12th- will be are scheduled times for presentations. Each presentation will be about 5 to 10 minutes long discussion, where you will briefly state what it is you are presenting and how it relates to what we learned this semester.

Presentation options:

Short powerpoint , video, or photographs,

Artwork , sculpture, diagram or collage, painting

( these are options but it is not limited to these) .

Exams: Three Exams Plus Final Exam

Multiple choice Match Short answer questions Long answer questions.
