-In Japan, USA and Asia: Backflow prevention performance

-In Europe: Backflow prevention device design

【Europe】Performance on backflow prevention must be assured by

construction. EN1717-based national standards

There must be a physical “airgap” construction on the

primary side of connection or on the inside

Risk of backflow in WashletNozzle unit

Overflow level of ceramic

Nozzle extends to the rim surface of bowl, and backflow can occur when 4 conditions are fulfilled simultaneously:

1) Toilet bowl is clogged2) Nozzle is extended3) Flow conduit is opened4) Negative pressure on primary side

Accumulated sales of Washlet products by

Japanese manufacturers exceed 100 million

units, but there has been no reported incident

of backflow-related accidents!

Currently, there are only 2 options left for the manufacturers:-Installation with RPZ backflow device; or-Airgap construction in the water conduit to raise the overflow level


Question:If the vacuum breaker has the same level of backflow prevention performance as airgap construction, and if the reliability of the system is assured by product certification, could it be considered sufficient?



Proposal from TOTO

In order to help promote both water efficient plumbing fixtures and backflow prevention devices, we would like to make the following proposal:

A douche outlet installed at least 25mm above

the overflow level of the pan, at any position,

does not require an external backflow

prevention device;

Or if the device incorporates backflow

prevention constructions, its performance shall

be AS/NZS 2845.1 compliant.

If the douche outlets is less than 25mm above

the overflow level of the pan, at any position, a

“high hazard” backflow prevention device must

be installed unless the device incorporates an

AS/NZS 2845.1 or AS2845.2 compliant

backflow prevention device.

As evidence of compliance,

test by approved test labs and

conformity certificate (marking)

shall be required

For plumbing fixtures, backflow prevention performance should be required, and for devices that do not fulfill the requirements, installation of RPZ backflow prevention
