IntroductionLetterTheDawsonOralHistoryProject(DOHP)isaresearchprojectthatisledbyDawsonCollegestudents.AllstudentsintheSocialSciencesmusttakeacoursecalledResearchMethodsinwhichtheylearnabouthowtoconductresearchatallitsstages,fromthecollectionofdatatoitsinterpretationandorganization.InDOHP,weuseanoralhistorymethodologytorecordlife
historiesofourdiversecity’sresidents.Notonlyarewedeeplyinterestedinthemultipleexperiencesandperspectivesofthepeopleweliveamongst,butwealsoseeeveryone’sstoriesasvaluableandimportant.TheserecordingswillbepreservedintheDOHPArchivesfordecades(maybeevencenturies!)sothatinterestedresearcherscanlearnaboutthepeoplewholivedinMontrealatthebeginningofthe21stcenturyfromtheirownvoices.Youarebeingaskedtoparticipateasoneofthosevoices. IfyouarewillingtosharesomeofyourmemoriesandperspectiveswiththeDawsonOralHistoryProject,youwillbeaskedtositwithaDOHPinterviewerandtalkaboutyourlifestory.Youcanexpectthewholeprocesstolastapproximately1.5to2hours.Theinterviewcantakeplaceanywhereyoufeelcomfortable,aslongasitisinaspacethatisquietandfreeofinterruptions.Theinterviewwillberecordedwithadigitalaudiorecorder.Youwillbeaskedveryopenquestionsaboutyourlifehistory,andyouwillbegivenalotoffreedomtotakethediscussioninanydirectionthatyouwouldliketogo.Youshouldfeelfreetodiscusswhateveryouwanttotalkabout,ortonotanswerquestionsifyou’dprefernotto.Youmaystoptheinterviewatanytime. Onceyourinterviewhasbeenrecorded,youwillbeaskedtosignaconsentformtoallowDOHPtoplaceyourrecordinginitsarchive.Shortlythereafter,youwillreceivefromyourintervieweradigitalcopyofyourrecordingandacopyofthesignedconsentformforyourrecords.Withyourconsent,yourinterviewwillbemadepubliclyavailabletointerestedresearchersforlisteningandreading.Theinterviewmightalsobeusedinpart,orinitsentirety,forpublications,broadcastpurposes,documentaryproduction,exhibitions,andfundingapplications.According to the Researcher Agreement, all researchers are required to make an attempt to contact you prior to any public usage of your interview in its entirety, or in part. In the spirit of the Dawson Oral History Project’s commitment to shared authority, you will have the opportunity to modify or refuse any public usage of your recorded interview. This collaborative process has been designed to ensure that the interviewee feels comfortable with the final audio piece that is made public.
