Introduction - Helen Myers 00.00- 04.15

At the moment, I suppose that many of us feel relieved that we have managed to get through 2 weeks of online teaching and learning - and we probably took a big breath at the weekend.

Depending on your circumstances (everyone is different) - certainly for those for whom this is all new, some are wanting to take stock and plan for what is likely to be a continuation of this through the summer term.

So it's great to be able to draw on the experience of colleagues who, because all the pupils have electronic devices, have been using technology on an on-going basis across their schools….

That has been the case with some of our previous speakers, and it is the case with tonight's speaker, Jane Basnett, Head of Languages at Downe House school, who has an enormous amount of knowledge and experience which she generously shares.

When working as part of a large organisation, it's important to think about structures, about management, how to be effective and efficient amongst colleagues . and in the current climate, to think about how we can be aware of what it is realistic to achieve, and what it is not realistic to achieve.

I have been extremely impressed by what I have seen people share in recent TiLT webinars about whole-school adoption of 'platforms' such as Google / Microsoft which means that individual teachers are not working in isolation, where they can share the load and where pupils, and just as importantly, parents (who are now TAs / Teachers) can feel supported.

This evening, Jane Basnett will be sharing how her school uses Microsoft teams and OneNote to work really collaboratively in departments and in classes.

The focus of the first part of this evening's webinar will be to ask Jane to show us what Microsoft Teams and Class Notebook can do

..then when you have seen what is possible, and you want to follow it up, Jane has kindly offered to carry on after the hour with a 'TilT extra' in the true sense of the MOTD Extra .. allowing us to look in more details at the 'how' ,, having a chance to ask the questions which may have occurred to you as she presents.

…..And the conversation can carry on either on Twitter with #titltwebinar as a hashtag, or on the great FB group managed by Catherine Cheater called 'secondarymflresources' .

Because there is so much to get through, by and large as moderator I will be recording questions rather than intervening - and I'd draw attention to the fact that this is recorded, so if you need a repetition / a refresher, you will be able to review it within hours of the end.

Management

Any advice on how you could simplify things for lower level learners? I teach refugees and migrant workers at Entry Level 2 only and with low level tech skills. But I've have been asked to use Teams as my VLE.

Do everything together firstSee it as part of the learning processDon’t let them go off without practising togetherGradually introduce new thingsVideo yourself - helps the younger

Advice from participation chat

@2 Elisabeth- at my school we have used the assignment feature as a register. as you can see who has viewed the assignment. You can call the assignment register. Just ask students to check in. ( You could also use the assignment to send any links or docs students would need for the lesson. )

In Google, there is Google doc that enables group work if needed ('Students edit file'. What is the equivalent for Microsoft?

Collaboration - demonstrated earlier (file they worke don tofgeher) and by Sandra in her session.

can you insert a ready made audio file from a coursebook??

Yes

can the students record spoken answers and upload them as well

Yes - audio and video

does setting work in teams make sense if they don't use onenote? How would they hand in work and how could you mark it?

Yes - they would each have a folder in the files section = or upload into the file section.

STREAM

Q: How do you create this video?

31

Page 32: Introduction - Helen Myers 00.00- 04.15  · Web view2020-04-10 · At the moment, I suppose that many of us feel relieved that we have managed to get through 2 weeks of online teaching

Do you use the transcription feature in Microsoft Stream? That works fairly well if the audio input is clear, I've found out recently.

Is it live? (Who asked this?)

so this is a built in screen recorder?

Future webinar

How do you import a pre-recorded video from stream onto the one note page?

Future webinar

is this a bit like Screenr or Loom?

Pens

Do you use a digital pen to write on these whiteboards?

Yes

Is there a way to auto mark forms?

Yes - automatically with quiz

Can you please demonstrate how to use the streams function- looks super cool

Future webinar

Teams again

live lessons what is your school’s policy regarding safeguarding and live lessons?

Managers are part of teamSessions are recorded.

how do you allow students to pair up and work?

Yes - create a channelCould not speak to each other

@Jane, do you also teach synchronously in real-time?

Yes

Class notebook again

Can you review student work on OneNote whilst they are still working on it? Can you see what they do appear live as you are marking a page?

Yes

Do you find it sometimes takes quite a while for their work to sync, which makes marking it during the remote lesson more tricky? I'm having a few issues with my one note syncing at the moment (even having left it for quite some time to catch up!)

Yes - can be

Teams again

I'd also like to know how to get them to pair off in a Teams Meeting - in Zoom there is the Breakout Rooms function - is there an equivalent in Teams Meetings?

Ye s- channel (but not sure they can speak - check)

I meant on Teams Meeetings (ie live classes) not in OneNote

like Susan asked: is there equivalent of zoom break out room?

Channels

Class notebook again

Q: If I edit a page from Content Library after I share it with students, do they see the changes?

No - advice: only hand out when final

Can I pick ( with permission ) content from a colleague's notebook and share with my students

Yes

Why do you set the word document that you have embedded into the one note page as a background?

1:37 Repeated example from earlier. To allow them to writ eon top.

Problem if inserted, as they may move the page boundary and their writng could be out ofline.

@jane, do you have a master notebook per year and then distribute to your teams?

1:38 Yes

Then teachers do not have to do things individually

Language tools - Immersive reader

Q: How do you change the language please?

Select vocab first / review / language / set proofing language

Demo of problem if read in a US accent …

Picture dictionary in Immersive

Comes up naturally according to which language has been selected.

Dictate - Pupils will insert a YouTube video let it run with disctate - then they get transcript

Final comment from a participant …

My initial question was...why would you go with Microsoft instead of Google? Now I can see why!...So much to learn. Exciting times indeed!
