IntroductionPhenomenex is proud to introduce Lux™, our new line of
polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases.
We know chiral separations can be challenging. With many
different product offerings in the industry, it may be difficult to
find the appropriate column to fit your needs.
Lux™ columns are engineered to provide a straightforward
approach to enantiomeric recognition and separation through
HPLC and SFC.
Lux™ columns are offered with two chiral stationary phases
(CSPs), both of which use coated derivatized cellulose as the
chiral selector. With new phases continuously in development,
you can rest assured that Lux™ columns will meet your chiral
separation demands of today as well as provide the latest in
chiral separation technologies for years to come.

Cellulose Backbones
Over the past two decades, derivatized cellulose has
established itself as one of the most universal platforms
for separating racemic mixtures. It offers a variety of chiral
recognition mechanisms, including:
steric effects (attractive and repulsive)•
hydrogen bonding•
π - π interactions•
dipole interactions•
ionic interactions•
Broad Solvent System Compatibility
Derivatized cellulose is often compatible with a wide range of
solvent systems:
Normal Phase•
Polar Organic•
SFC (Supercritical Fluid Chromatography)•
Reversed Phase•

Enantioselective Polysaccharide Derivatives
Lux™ columns utilize polysaccharide derivatives that yield
broad-ranged enantiomeric selectivity.
Benefits include:
Unique halogenated substitution with • Lux™ Cellulose-2
Improved resolution with many separations using • Lux™ Cellulose-1 compared to *CHIRALCEL® OD-H®.
Specialized Coating Process
Lux™ media undergoes a specialized coating process onto
high quality silica. Significant benefits from this process
include:
High loading capacity•
Stable, reproducible phases•
Stability in a variety of solvents, including SFC conditions• †
Scalable Particle Sizes
Lux™ columns come in 3 μm and 5 μm particle sizes to
accommodate all your resolution and throughput needs.
pH Stability
Lux™ columns are pH stable from 2 – 8, providing options for
reversed phase chiral method development.
Complete Package Solution
No need to hassle with different columns or part numbers
if your chiral methods take you down different routes of
development. Lux™ columns are compatible with different
solvent strategies:
Normal Phase•
Polar Organic•
SFC (Supercritical Fluid Chromatography)•
Reversed Phase•
Inside Lux™ Chiral Stationary PhasesAlthough there may be various polysaccharide-based columns
on the market, it is important to note the following

Phenyl rings contribute to π- π interactions.
Chlorine atoms have strong electronegativity, contributing to dipole interactions.
Cellulose backbones form linear chains, creating various grooves and cavities which provide steric and inclusion interactions.
Lux™ Cellulose-2 uses the chiral selector cellulose tris(3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate)
Electronegative atoms, such as oxygen, nitrogen, and chlorine are responsible for hydrogen bonding.

Lux™ Cellulose-2Advanced chiral selector provides a unique range of enantioselectivity
Lux™ Cellulose-2 incorporates an advanced halogenated
derivative, leading to unique enantioselectivity compared to
previously commercialized cellulose phases.
The chiral selector is a cellulose
tris(3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate)
It has been established that the introduction of either electron-
donating or electron-withdrawing groups, such as chlorine,
tends to improve the optical resolution abilities of chiral
stationary phases (CSPs) with phenylcarbamate derivatives.
In addition, substitution at the meta or para position on the
phenyl moiety is considered more beneficial than at the ortho
position to establish higher chiral recognition.1
The unique derivatization of Lux™ Cellulose-2 makes it an
ideal CSP to add to all chiral screening protocols and provides
excellent complementary selectivity to Lux™ Cellulose-1 in
many applications.
Studies show that for a set of 14 racemates of varying
properties, the 3-chloro-4-methylphenylcarbamate derivative
of cellulose was one of two derivatives, separating all 14
compounds with reasonable selectivity, with some better than
dimethylphenylcarbamate derivatives of cellulose.1

Lux™ Cellulose-1The new choice for dimethylphenylcarbamate separations
Lux™ Cellulose-1 features a classical cellulose derivative used
industry-wide for many enantiomeric separations.
The derivative is cellulose
tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate)
This particular chiral selector has well established abilities
in resolving a wide range of racemates. Lux™ Cellulose-1
provides enhanced resolution for a variety of applications
compared to similar CSPs.
This derivative of cellulose has a well established history
of broad enantioselectivity. The substitution of the electron
donating methyl groups at the 3 and 5 position enhance
the activity of the phenyl group. This leads to enhanced
enantioselectivity for aromatic and conjugated compounds.
In addition, Lux™ Cellulose-1 undergoes a specialized
manufacturing and coating process, which, as shown in this
brochure, provides greater resolution for many applications
compared to *CHIRALCEL® OD-H® .

Extending Lifetime
Phenomenex recommends the use of SecurityGuard™ guard
cartridges to extend the lifetime of your column, especially with
samples extracted from complex matrixes. Ideally, samples must
be completely dissolved in the mobile phase or filtered through a
syringe filter of approximately 0.45 µm porosity.
