Continue to LessonlessonFrom an early age, Close had to face several forms of adversity including:Severe dyslexiaUnpopularity in schoolA neuromuscular condition that prevented him from playing sportsThe death of his father at age 11Despite adversity, Close found comfort in art.

LessonAt age 14, Close went to a Jackson Pollock exhibition, where he was inspired by the artists unique style of painting.It was at this moment that Close decided to become an artist.

Jackson Pollock Full Fathom Five (1947)LessonClose graduated from the University of Washington in 1962, and moved on to Yale to acquire his Master of Fine Arts.Although he was inspired by Abstract Expressionism, he developed his own photorealistic style while at Yale.He reproduced polaroid pictures on a large scale. He used a technique he named knitting.

Chuck Close's Gridding Technique

LessonClose is confined to the use of a wheelchair due to the rupture of his spinal artery in 1988.Although considered a quadriplegic, he regained some use of his limbs through physical therapy.Close tapes paint brushes to his hands and uses rotating canvases to approach his large works.

LessonDespite numerous disabilities and hardships, Chuck Close is a renowned and respected artist that maintains a positive attitude. In 2000, he was named a recipient of the National Medal of Arts. In the embedded video below, watch Closes inspirational letter to his younger self.Letter to Myself
