 THE  CONFLICT  CLOUD

WIN  –WIN  Conflict  Resolution  That  Works

This structured, graphic tool enables people to effectively analyse personal and interpersonal conflicts whether they are in a textbook, on the playground, within a school management team, in the home, in business or in the wider community.

The Conflict Cloud assists in taking meaningful action or making a decision in a fair, concise and non-provocative way. The process is simple enough to be used by children and profound enough to be used by CEOs, professors and school administrators.

The Problem

Are  people’s  NEEDS  being  compromised  in  these  ways  of  dealing  with  conflicts  and  decisions?    •Give  In

•Tug  of  War

•Impose

•Compromise

•Avoidance

•Denial

Why  change  the  way  we  handle  conflicts?  What  do  you  think  of  when  you  hear  the  word  conflict?

Win - Win Solutions using the Cloud Technique

• Win-win solutions enable both

sides to satisfy their significant

NEEDS

• The problem is that in order to

satisfy the NEEDS each side

insists on getting conflicting

WANTS

• Thinking win-win requires us to

shift the focus from getting what

we WANT to satisfying what we

NEED

One side getting what they WANT can jeapardise the others’ side from satisfying their NEED. Not a win-win solution! So what is the solution?

The Solution

A  method  that  enables  us  to  effectively:

• Analyse  conflicts  and  decisions  from  all  perspectives

• Remove  finger  pointing  from  the  analysis  • Make  a  decision  and  resolve  conflicts  without

compromising  important  NEEDS

A  method  of  dealing  with  conflicts  and  decisions:

• Where  both  sides  satisfy  their  NEEDS  more  than  expected

• That  improves  the  relationship

The Solution

A method that is: • Simple… Is the method easy enough to be

used by people of all ages and abilities?

• Concrete… Is the method specific and not too abstract? Does it allow people to relate the analysis to real life experience?

• Graphically structured… Is the method sufficiently structured and visual?

• Logically sequenced… Does the order of the steps make sense?

• Practical… Does the method enable its underlying theory to yield practical outcomes?

• Assessable… Does the method provide a strategy for evaluation?

Behaviour Applications: • Counselling • Peer mediation • Classroom management • Life management skills • Parent and Teacher conferences • Conflict resolution among staff, in the

home, the workplace, in the community and internally for individuals

Applied to behaviour, the Cloud enables students and all people to think for themselves.

It can be used to analyse both, internal conflicts in order to enable more responsible and satisfying decisions and choices, and external conflicts to resolve disputes peacefully.

Benefits of using the Cloud in behaviour situations: ▪ Enables understanding of problems from all

points of view ▪ Enables more responsible decisions and

choices that accommodate the NEEDS of others ▪ Creates ownership of responsible solutions

and commitment to their implementation ▪ Develops emotional understanding and

empathy ▪ Improves clarity of language and focuses

communication ▪ Turns the problem away from 'you against me'

to 'you and me against the problem' ▪ Develops initiative to responsibly solve own

problems ▪ Substantially improves relationships

No halfway compromises, no blame, no fights, no avoidance, no denial.

Satisfy your needs, create win-win solutions, build relationships, and increase harmony and personal wellbeing

Curriculum Applications: ▪ Analysis of narrative and informational text (oral or written) ▪ Development of communication skills (oral and written)

Applied to curriculum, the Cloud enables students to relate content to their everyday lives and to actively engage in more focused and meaningful classroom discussions, regardless of their level of academic skill.

The Cloud provides a scaffold to assist students in analysing conflicts, actions and decisions in narrative and informational text in a way that deepens their understanding and enhances their ability to communicate what they have learned.

Benefits of using the Cloud in content applications: ▪ Enables students to clearly and succinctly retell and remember key points of text ▪ Enhances ability to draw inferences from text ▪ Focuses thinking beyond a literal interpretation ▪ Enables students to understand deeper and broader perspectives of all sides of a problem or situation. ▪ Relates curriculum to students' daily lives ▪ Enables students to apply new knowledge to authentic situations ▪ Evokes classroom discussion that is more focused and meaningful ▪ Enables students to identify essential, yet less obvious details in text by surfacing assumptions underlying main ideas ▪ Enhances ability to improve existing solutions and create new ones

Less dependency on memorising to pass exams, less misunderstandings, less miscommunication and confusion with schoolwork.

Increases focus and clarity, improves recall, expands and deepens thinking, transfers meaning to real life situations, elevates appreciation for all sides of the problem, improves solution building.
