Outline

This project is designed to show the abilities of elementary and junior high

school students in terms of talking to foreigners about their town.

Included in this project are examples of what the ALTs believe the students can

achieve. This is broken down by each grade level. These will be used as

guidelines for the students to give them examples of what they can aim for.

This is separated by each school area. Also included are examples of lesson

plans, worksheets, and actual students work.

There are ample opportunities in the English textbooks to give the students the

opportunity to be able to communicate with foreigners in their daily life.

There is also a fortnightly workshop called “Can I help you?” which gives the

students real life opportunities outside of school to practice their English with

foreigners. ALTs volunteer their time to improve the students’ confidence and

vocabulary to enable them to interact with foreigners on a daily basis.

9 Minashi used to be the premier shrine of Hida. Ikibina Matsuri and the spring Miya Festival are held there. It is a high-rank shrine. It hosts the famous cedar tree called ‘Oosugi’. Many people come to Minashi during the new year to pray.

It’s held every year on May 1st and 2nd. Nine girls from the Hida area are selected as living dolls. They look like the prince and princess dolls. We go to watch the festival every year.

Examples of lesson plans. These are lesson plans used by the ALTs in both elementary and junior high

school, followed by actual students work.

Lesson Plan:

Approximate time: Two (possibly three, depending on class skill) 50 minute lessons

Preparation: In days leading up to this lesson, students should have practiced sentences

describing their town (New Horizon 2nd Grade, page 64 is a great example, though

preferably without the “I love my town” part).

Students will have gotten a worksheet (see attached), and had two of the three spaces filled

out: the subject, and the Japanese section.

Lesson:

Students will spend the entire class period “translating” their Japanese into the provided

English blank.

Depending on class skill and speed, one more class period might be needed to complete the

English section.

The JTE and ALT will walk among the students, helping out when necessary.

When students are finished, they will bring up their paper to the JTE or ALT.

Upon getting the okay, students will practice reading aloud what they wrote.

Conclusion:

JTE and/or ALT will choose students to stand up and speak their parts to the class.

-Greeting.

-1 Show example.

JTE does the example using all the speaking points correctly, followed by the ALT doing the example

but without following the speaking points.

After the demonstration ask the students what one they think is better and why they think so, then

discuss the following points.

Speaking points: 1. Use map 2. No script 3. Clear voice 4. Speed

2- have the students go into their groups and practice their scripts using all the points that were

discussed and walk around checking each student is using them correctly.

After the students have shared their poster have the students evaluate each other on their use of

the speaking points.

3: example 2.

Have the JTE read the script again but this time have the ALT give them feedback on what they need

to improve on, tell the students to go around and tell the teachers or other students about their

favourite place and have the person they are telling give them some feedback.

4: students do the task that was shown with example 2.

5: students share advice from teachers or whoever they talked to with the class about their favourite

place.

6: students do final speaking: Just like before have the students in their groups present their poster

about their favourite place to everyone in their group and have them evaluate them on the speaking

points.

Hello, my name is ( ). I’m going to tell you about my favourite place

in Takayama. This is Sanyodo book store in Ishiura Cho. It’s near Super Sato.

I think that it is useful place, because I can find many things in the store.

For example, there are many books, CDs and stationary.

I like this book store.

7: comments from JTE and ALT.

Choose a couple of students who you thought worked really well today and tell them why you

thought they worked well.

Note:

The lesson prior to this lesson should be the students making their poster.

Students are to make their own script about their favourite place in Kamitakara using for example

-I live in

.-It’s famous for

-It’s near

-There are

Etc.

Have the students draw their posters and write out their scripts, try to have them memorize the

script but if it’s too difficult its ok to have them put some notes on the back of their poster.

Competition

For grades 7-9, a competition will be held for students to describe their town

at the end of the year. Prizes will be given for each grade. Students will be

given hints with words that they have learnt as well as images of Takayama

with example sentences.

Also, if agreed with the JTE, a role play could be implemented at the end of the

year for the students to show what they have learnt, using examples from the

textbook.

Conclusion

The ALTs believe that the students can successfully speak to foreigners by the

time they graduate junior high school. Projects such as, ‘can I help you?’ are

really encouraging for students that wish to have extracurricular study.

This project shows that with the use of the textbook and out of the box ideas,

students can put their English to good use which hopefully gives them the

confidence and platform for further study. Making lessons fun and imaginative

really allow the students to express themselves, enjoy using English and most

importantly use it practically.
