INTRODUCING AIR OPTIX PLUS HYDRAGLYDE...

1
With changing times, come changing needs. My patients today lead active, busy lives, which often involve long work days, intense concentration on digital device screens, regular exercise, and other activities that can be stressful on the contact lens–wearing eye. Not surprisingly, my patients’ demand for contact lenses that can keep pace with their dynamic world, without compromising on simplicity of use or comfort, has increased exponentially. When dealing with such taxing lifestyles, exceptional deposit protection and lasting lens surface moisture become critical elements in meeting these patients’ vision needs. To address these issues, Alcon has merged two of its breakthrough technologies in AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses, now available. AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses feature the same proprietary SmartShield ® Technology found in all AIR OPTIX ® contact lenses. SmartShield ® Technology helps prevent silicone from reaching the surface of AIR OPTIX ® contact lenses, 1 which helps the lens surface retain moisture 2-5 and resist irritating deposits 6,7 for consistent comfort throughout the wearing period. 8,9 * What distinguishes AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses is the inclusion of HydraGlyde ® Moisture Matrix in its manu- facturing process. HydraGlyde ® Moisture Matrix—the proprietary moisture technology already featured in Alcon’s advanced lens care solutions—is a block copolymer. One side of the HydraGlyde ® molecule adsorbs onto the AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde contact lens; the other side attracts additional moisture, resulting in an envelope of lasting lens surface wettability. 4,5 In a study of lens wetting substantivity, in which a lower contact angle represents higher lens surface wettability, AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde ® provided better lens surface wetting after 16 hours of simulated wear than AIR OPTIX ® AQUA. 5 (Figure 1) To maximize the HydraGlyde ® advantage throughout the wearing period, I recommend pairing AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses with Alcon’s premium peroxide lens care solution, CLEAR CARE ® PLUS Cleaning & Disinfecting Solution. For patients who prefer a multipurpose solution, OPTI- FREE ® Puremoist ® Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution is also available (and also includes HydraGlyde ® Moisture Matrix). These solutions have been shown to add extra hours of comfortable wear when used with silicone hydrogel contact lenses. 10,11 With nightly use of these solutions, AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde contact lens patients can maximize the outstanding moisture benefits of HydraGlyde ® Moisture Matrix all month long. 12-16 AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses are the first and only lenses featuring this unique combination of deposit protection 6,7 and lens surface moisture retention. 4,5 For current wearers of AIR OPTIX ® AQUA, there is no refit needed when switching to AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde ® . 17 Importantly, they are also available in an improved parameter range over AIR OPTIX ® AQUA (+8.00D to -12.00D), so more patients can now experience the benefits of the AIR OPTIX ® brand. AIR OPTIX ® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses are my new preferred choice for many patients, helping them to see, look and feel their best. References 1. Rex J, Perry SS, Lemp J. To address these issues, Alcon has merged two of its breakthrough technologies in AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses, now available.

AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses feature the same proprietary SmartShield® Technology found in all AIR OPTIX® contact lenses. SmartShield® Technology helps prevent silicone from reaching the surface of AIR OPTIX® contact lenses,1 which helps the lens surface retain moisture2-5 and resist irritating deposits6,7 for consistent comfort throughout the wearing period.8,9* What distinguishes AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses is the inclusion of

HydraGlyde® Moisture Matrix in its manu-factur ing process. HydraGlyde® Moisture Matrix—the proprietary

moisture technology a lready featured in Alcon’s advanced lens care solutions—is a block copolymer. One side of the HydraGlyde® molecule adsorbs onto the AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde contact lens; the other side attracts additional moisture, resulting in an

envelope of lasting lens surface wettability.4,5 In a study of lens wetting substantivity, in which a lower contact angle represents higher lens surface wettability, AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde® provided better lens surface wetting after 16 hours of simulated wear than AIR OPTIX® AQUA.5 (Figure 1)

To maximize the HydraGlyde® advantage throughout the wearing period, I recommend pairing AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses with Alcon’s premium peroxide lens care solution, CLEAR CARE® PLUS Cleaning & Disinfecting Solution. For patients who prefer a multipurpose solution, OPTI-FREE® Puremoist® Multi-Purpose Disinfecting Solution is also available (and also includes HydraGlyde® Moisture Matrix). These solutions have been shown to add extra hours of comfortable wear when used with silicone hydrogel contact lenses.10,11 With nightly use of these solutions, AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde contact lens patients can maximize the outstanding moisture benefits of HydraGlyde® Moisture Matrix all month long.12-16

AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses are the first and only lenses featuring this unique combination of deposit protection6,7 and lens surface moisture retention.4,5 For current wearers of AIR OPTIX® AQUA, there is no refit needed when switching to AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde®.17 Importantly, they are also available in an improved parameter range over AIR OPTIX® AQUA (+8.00D to -12.00D), so more patients can now experience the benefits of the AIR OPTIX® brand. AIR OPTIX® plus HydraGlyde contact lenses are my new preferred choice for many patients, helping them to see, look and feel their best.
