Ch 3, Sec. 9 Tense
Review of present tense:
English has three ways to indicate the present tense:
simple present – She sings.
present progressive – She is singing.
present emphatic – She does sing.

Ch 3, Sec. 9 Tense
In Latin the present tense is formed by finding the stem of a verb and adding personal endings:
2nd p.p. - re = stem
arāre – re = arā

Ch 3, Sec. 10 Future Tense
English often uses a helping verb to indicate tense:
Present – She is singing.
Imperfect – She was singing.
Future – She will sing.
Latin has no helping verbs.
Latin uses a tense marker between the stem and the personal endings you have already learned.
Formula – Stem + tense marker + personal endings = a new tense (future, imperfect)

Ch 3, Sec. 10 Future Tense
The future tense marker is –bi-
Two exceptions – ‘i’ drops before ‘ō’ is 1st. s. and becomes a ‘u’ in 3rd pl. Thus amō, amāre in the future tense:
1s amābō 1pl amābimus
2s amābis 2pl amābitis
3s amābit 3pl amābunt

Block 8/5 Ch 3, Sec. 11 Imperfect Tense
The imperfect tense marker is ‘-ba-’.
N.B. – the first person singular uses the ‘-m’ ending, not the ‘-ō’ ending.
Formula is still --- stem + tense marker + ending = imperfect tense
![Page 21: Intro to Latin Bellwork - Weebly](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022013001/61cba85f9e230b3abd667432/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Block 8/5 Ch 3, Sec. 11 Imperfect Tense
N.B. long marks are added to tense marker for 2nd person s. and pl. plus 1st person pl.
![Page 22: Intro to Latin Bellwork - Weebly](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022013001/61cba85f9e230b3abd667432/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Block 8/5 Ch 3, Sec. 11 Imperfect Tense
Perfectus in Latin means ‘finished’ or ‘complete’.
So the perfect tense is for completed actions.
E.g. simple past - I plowed
The imperfect tense is for not completed or continuing action in the past, the past progressive in English.
E.g. I was plowing, I used to plow, I kept on plowing
