Transcript of Intro to kingdoms
Grade 9 ScienceKingdoms of Life
Classification of Living Things
Living things can be sorted into
these 5 kingdoms…but it’s not the only
way!
Kingdom Moneran (Bacteria)
Kingdom Protista
Kingdom Fungi
Kingdom Plantae
Kingdom Animalia
Kingdom Moneran - Bacteria microscopic, single-celled
organisms do not have a nucleus but do have
a ring of DNA (prokaryotic) do have a cell wall Some can photosynthesize
(autotrophic) Most are heterotrophic
Bacteria Some bacteria are useful – Lactobacillus
bulgaricus used to make yogurt Some bacteria are pathogens and cause
disease, like Pneumococcus that causes pneumonia
Kingdom Protista single-celled organisms with a nucleus
(eukaryotic) All live in water Includes a huge variety of organisms
from giant kelp to amoeba All have the same cell structure Some can photosynthesize, others
can’t
Kingdom Protista Chlorella Plasmodium Kelp Algae
Kingdom Fungi Eukaryotic cells Cannot photosynthesize Heterotrophic Have cell walls Some single celled like yeast Most multicellular (molds,
mushrooms)
Kingdom Fungi
Kingdom Plantae Multicellular – made up of lots of
cells Make their own food by
photosynthesis (autotrophic) Have cell walls Lots of examples: flowering
plants / non-flowering plants
Kingdom Plantae Mosses Ferns Flowering plants Non-flowering
plants
Kingdom Animalia Multicellular – made up of may
specialised cells heterotrophic Can be further classified into
vertebrates and non-vertebrates then into classes such as amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, insects
Animals you may not have seen…
Aye-aye lemur Star-nosed mole Blob fish Alligator snapping
turtle 3-toed Sloth Preying mantis Nudibranch Some type of
jellyfish!
Limitations Much more
DNA evidence now
Three Domain System is more recent
Another way of organizing…
Lichens•formed by a fungus and cyanobacteria living symbiotically
* first to enter an uninhabited area, slowly break down rock-*they are indicator species: they are very sensitive to environmental change, don't tolerate chemical pollution, eg. sulphur dioxide
Don’t fit into ANY Kingdom!
What about Viruses? Are they living or not?? No one can decide!!
