Robert Edward Lee’s childhood• He was raised in the
area where George Washington was still a living memory.
• His father died at Cumberland Island, Georgia, March 25, 1818.
• He was educated in Alexandria, Virginia, schools, were he was at the top of his class.

Early Adulthood– he obtained
appointment to West Point in 1825.
– While at West Point he was training with Ulysses S. Grant.
– He graduated second in his class and is the only person who didn’t receive a single demerit

a second a brevet 2nd Lieutenant of Engineers
• On June 30, 1831, he married Mary Ann Randolph Custis. They had seven children.
• He was put in charge of his first battalion during the Mexican war

• He was highly recognized during this American Mexican was and was promoted to Colonel due to his
gallantry and distinguished conduct in performing vital
scouting missions. • In 1852, he became Superintendent of the Military
Academy. In 1855, Secretary of War Jefferson Davis, transferred Lee from staff to the line and was
commissioned Lieutenant Colonel 2nd Cavalry.
• He was transferred to West Texas were he served from 1857-1861

• In February of 1861, General Winfield Scott recalled Lee from Texas when the lower South seceded from the
Union.
• Politically, Robert E. Lee was a Whig. Ironically, he was attached strongly to the Union and to the
Constitution.

• On June 1, 1862 Robert Edward Lee assumed command of the Army of Northern Virginia in the
Confederate capital of Richmond.
• The Union forces could not predict him.
• Lee March all around the South and won battles,
shocking the union.
• Not until February 1865 was he named Commander in Chief of all Confederate forces

then take over Washington D.C.

• With the three-day battle with fathers against sons, and brothers against brothers, this was a blood bath.
• It was a very hard fight.
• The south lost the battle and soon afterwards lost the war.

Appomattox Courthouse.

Post Civil War
• On June 13, 1865 he was pardon by President Lincoln.
• On August 4th, 1865 he was elected president of Washington College, now known as Washington Lee
University.
• In February of 1867 General Lee declined to be the candidate of the governorship of Virginia.
• In the spring of 1870 he was experiencing health problems and went to Georgia to recoup from the
health problems.
• On October 12, 1870 he died in Lexington Virginia.
