Performance NotesThis lively, rhythmic gathering song is based on Psalms 42 and 150. The invitation to “go tothe altar of God” indicates that our worship is communal in nature, and that liturgy is thework of all those gathered: presider, ministers, choir, musicians, and congregation.
Whether guitar or keyboard is employed, the key to making this piece alive is the rhythmic, driving nature of the accompaniment. The momentum continues; there is no variation oftempo. To make the verses more interesting and set them off from the refrain, simplify theaccompaniment, building it again toward the end of the verse.
The congregation’s melody line in the refrain is decorated with soprano descant and a bassharmony. These can be used individually or both together as heard on the recording. Theverses are arranged for either SA or SATB.
