oth er. I have cared for you. Bear each oth er’s bur dens.
REFRAIN:
Love one an oth er as I have loved you. Care for each
Performance NotesThe text for Love One Another is taken mainly from John’s account of the Last Supper. It recalls Jesus’ words of challenge and encouragement in an atmosphere of communal intimacy. “If you bear each other’s burdens and bind each other’s wounds, you will find that in just such times, my presence to you will overflow.” (“…and so, you will know my return.”)
The word love is much abused in our culture. It has taken on usages so varied as to be nearly contradictory to each other. This song attempts to give meaning to it by referring to the images spoken by Jesus in the last discourse.
Because of the time it takes to develop, this song works best at communion time or during the washing of feet on Holy Thursday. Though there are seven verses, no more than three or four would be used at any one service. Pick and choose the verses which best fit the occasion, whether it be a theme of social justice, community service, Eucharistic ministry, a marriage encounter, or a wedding. Verses 3, 5, and 6 are appropriate for weddings; verses 2, 7, and 6 help develop the theme of social justice; verses 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7 are suitable for the Holy Thursday liturgy. Ordinary Time verses are 1, 2, 4, 6 or 1, 2, 6.
