Modcon Systems - Model FGD3 is a Certified Intrinsically Safe Gas Transmitter / Display for use in industrial gas moni-toring applications. It can be configured to detect a variety of flammable and toxic gases as well as CO2 and Oxygen.

W h a t I s A n I n t r i n s i c a l l y S a f e G a s D e t e c t o r ?

An Intrinsically Safe Gas Detector is one which is intended for use in a potentially explosive atmos-phere where, due to the nature of the environment or the industrial process taking place, there is the risk of an in-cendive spark from electrical apparatus causing an explosion.

These gas detectors are designed so that the energy produced in the event of an electrical fault is insufficient to cause an incendive spark.

An Electrical Safety Barrier Device must be used to connect power and signals between the gas detector and the 'Safe Area' (i.e. the area outside the potentially explosive atmosphere where mains powered equipment exists). This is nec-essary in order to preserve the safety integrity of the installation by limiting the power entering the potentially explo-sive atmosphere to a safe level - refer to the Accessories section for details of suitable barriers.

Examples are the water, pharmaceuticals and chemicals industries.

Description

The FGD 3 Oxygen or Toxic gas detectors use Pellistor, electrochemical or non-dispersive Infrared (NDIR) sensor technology to detect for gases in the atmosphere in potentially explosive atmospheres in Zones 0, 1 and 2. The detec-tors use the industry standard 4-20mA current loop both to power the detector and to convey the gas levels detected to a control unit. This means that under zero gas conditions 4mA is drawn from the supply, and under full scale gas conditions 20mA is drawn from the supply. The current varies linearly for gas levels between zero and full scale. The detector head uses a two-wire connection.

FGD3 model Bayblend® enclosure is the trade name for product line of amorphous, thermoplastic polymer blends

based on polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer (ABS) as well as the rubber-modified

polycarbonate (PC) and styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) blends. The blend technology employed supplies

products with an attractive combination of mechanical, thermal and rheological properties. Particular mention

should be made of Bayblend®`s high heat resistance (between that of ABS and PC), its high impact and notched im-

pact strength, and its high stiffness and dimensional stability.

The Bayblend® product range comprises:

- Nonreinforced standard grades (T grades)

- Nonreinforced flame-retardant grades (FR grades)

- Mineral-filled grades

- Glass fiber-reinforced T grades

- Special-purpose grades for specific applications

A marine version of the FGD3 is also available. This version is housed in a cast aluminium enclosure to provide higher RFI immunity where high power portable radios are used in the close confines of a vessel. The enclosure is plated and painted in order to withstand the harsh salt spray environment of the marine industry. The digital display is fitted with a sliding stainless steel front cover which remains over the display window when not being viewed thereby maintaining the RFI shielding properties of the enclosure during normal operation. An optional weather guard is available for installations exposed to the atmosphere or contaminants and is also suitable for use in other areas where hosing down takes place. The weather guard reduces the possibility of water or other contaminants entering into the gas sensor thereby improving the overall reliability of the gas detector in harsh environments. The weather guard is attached with tamperproof screws to ensure that it is not inadvertently removed.

The MCU1 is a single channel, wall mounting, monitoring and control unit for use in a safe area where there is no risk of the presence of potentially explosive gases. It can be used in either of the following ways:-

For applications where the gas detector head (or other sensor type) is sited in a potentially explosive atmosphere, a safety barrier must be fitted in order to limit the maximum voltage and current under a fault condition (e.g. short cir-cuit) such that an incendive spark cannot be created. Where suitable*, the internal safety barrier shown above may be fitted within the control unit. This can either be fitted at the time of manufacture (where requested) or at a later time if the system is extended by the installation of additional detectors.

* Note that some installations may necessitate the use of external barriers sited at the safe area/hazardous area inter-face - see the accessories page.
