The Inca Trail is a demanding but rewarding trek that combines ancient ruins, mountain scenery, lush cloud forest and rich subtropical jungle. For many people, it is the highlight of Peru, if not South America.
the trekThe 45 km (28 mile) trek is usually covered in four days, arriving at Machu Picchu on the morning of day four. The trek is rated moderate and any reasonably fit person should be able to complete the route. However, hiking uphill (and downhill!) can be challenging, so the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy it. While your group leader may not accompany you on the trek, you will be joined by a local guide and supported by a team of porters leaving you with only a small daypack to carry. Given the weather and altitude, hiking conditions are ideal during the drier months of May to September. October to April is cooler with more rainfall and is also less crowded. The classic Inca Trail is closed in February for regeneration; at that time an alternative trekking route will be hiked.
the nitty grittyA permit is required to hike the classic Inca Trail and there are only 500 available per day. Permits are issued on first-come, first-served basis, so it’s very important to book well in advance (four to five months before departure). When booking an Intrepid trip that includes the Inca Trail, you are required to supply the number and full details of the passport you intend to travel on. We endeavour to purchase your permit within four days of receiving all necessary information and relevant payment.
VERY IMPORTANT: Since permits are non changeable and non refundable, please consult with Intrepid before changing your passport details post booking (change of name, passport number, etc.) as this may result in your permit being invalidated.
If we can’t secure Inca Trail permits you can:
a. Change to another one of our fantastic trips or choose a different departure date, without incurring any Intrepid penaltiesb. Hike an alternative Inca Trek; which includes a day trip to Machu Picchuc. Stay two nights in Cuzco and then travel to Aguas Calientes by train and spend the day exploring Machu Picchu before returning to Cuzco
Not the hiking type? You can opt out of trekking the Inca Trail on any Intrepid trip. Simply let us know at time of booking and the above option ‘c’ will be arranged for you at no extra cost. Late booking fees apply if this change is requested after the Inca Trail permit is confirmed.
responsible trekkingIntrepid Travel is passionate about sustainable and responsible travel and this is particularly important on the Inca Trail. We are committed to paying a fair wage and supplying the proper equipment and resources to our porters and guides. We are also involved in promoting practices that contribute to the long-term sustainability of the environment, culture and local communities.

about the local lifestyle. Browse colourful markets for traditional
handicrafts and pick up a few words of the Quechua language

out to further uncover the secrets of the mysterious ruins. Have a
camera ready to capture magical moments along the way. This is
an unforgettable experience to be savoured! Day 8 Cuzco Depart
Cuzco at your leisure. In need of a top lunch spot before heading

ITINERARY... Day 1 Cuzco Get acquainted with the intriguing
blend of Inca and Spanish culture and discover some of Cuzco’s
lesser-known sights on a guided walking tour. Take the opportunity
to taste unique mate de coca (coca tea). Day 2 Sacred Valley/
Ollantaytambo Travel through the lush Sacred Valley and visit
a local community. Learn about their traditional lifestyle, browse

Look out for the maize crops alongside the river and covering the
terraces that stretch high up the valley walls. Spend the night in
Ollantaytambo - a magnificent example of Inca urban planning.
Days 3-6 Inca Trail/Machu Picchu/Cuzco Trek a trail that once
linked the Inca Empire. The ancient paths wind around mountains,
across high, rocky plateaus, through dense cloud forest and past
crumbling temple ruins. Climb over challenging mountain peaks -
including the 4,198 m-high Warmiwanusca (Dead Woman’s Pass)
- and camp out in the evenings. On the final morning, climb the
steps to Intipunku, the Sun Gate, and see mystical Machu Picchu
appearing through the mist. Rest for a moment to take it all in
before descending to the famous site to spend the day uncovering
the mystery of these amazing Inca ruins. Day 7 Cuzco Still seeking
adventure? An optional trip from Cuzco to the Urubamba River
provides white-water rafting or mountain-biking thrills. For those
with weary legs, have lunch at the Aldea Yanapay Cafe, part of a
self-sustainable organisation that provides the underprivileged
kids of Cuzco with health and education facilities.
ITINERARY... Day 1 lima Get acquainted with the charm, culture
and sophistication of this historic city on a guided orientation walk.
Day 2 Cuzco Visit the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited
city, home to the Incas for two centuries before the Spanish built
their capital here. Get a feel for local life, learn to love coca tea and
discover how history continues to live on here. Day 3 Sacred
Valley/Ollantaytambo The fertile Sacred Valley is a great place
to see charming villages, brightly dressed locals and lots of llamas.
Spend the night in the ancient town of Ollantaytambo, built in the
late 15th century. Days 4-7 Inca Trail/Machu Picchu Hike the
iconic Inca Trail and be awestruck when you watch the historic
ruins of Machu Picchu emerge from the mist. Wander around the
ruins or find a quiet spot to soak it all up. Day 8 Cuzco Recover

journey with a Pisco sour, the famed Peruvian drink made with a
clear local brandy mixed with egg white and lemon. Days 9-10
Amazon Jungle Travel up river in a motorised canoe to an
eco-friendly jungle lodge. Fall asleep to the chorus of nocturnal
creatures and wake to exotic birdcalls, then take a walk through the
jungle with a local guide. Learn about the Amazon’s exotic wildlife
and indigenous inhabitants, as well as the medicinal properties and
practical uses of native jungle plants. Days 11-12 lima Browse
local handicrafts in the Mercado de Indios, indulge in succulent
