Hello, and welcome to Romilly Quarter on Porthkerry Road.

The Chapel and the School House here at Romilly Quarter are beautiful landmark buildings so there’s been huge interest from the local community seeing their conversion into 11 new homes. It’s a magical process to see empty and disused buildings come to life again as they are restored and become homes.

We hope you enjoy finding out about the development and getting an idea of the finished homes. They are all different, all have individual layouts and have kept different parts of the Chapel’s history with them and we can only really give you a glimpse in this guide. Our company was set up by Alex and Kezia Fawcett specifically to develop brownfield sites (not turning green fields brown!). We have a design-led approach and aim to create modern and individual homes ready for you to make your own.

We manage the whole design and building process, starting with an historic building which has fallen out of use, but which we can see has the potential to become characterful homes. We undertake all of our own building work through a mixture of our own team and trusted sub-contractors.

We are proud to be award winners on our previous conversions – a mark of the quality and technical expertise we strive to achieve.

We think historic conversions make fabulous homes: all of the charm and character of a period property with the comfort and energy efficiency of a newly built house, together with layouts that suit modern lifestyles. We are passionate about creating wonderful homes from wonderful buildings.

Converted homes are also environmentally friendly, since they reuse the structure of the existing building and tend to be in central locations. Our homes meet all of the latest building standards for new homes, meaning that they offer excellent levels of insulation, energy efficiency and performance. We incorporate good environmental design as standard and always exceed minimum standards set by Building Regulations.

Romilly Quarter is a bespoke development of 11 town houses, each one unique. Whether you have a young family, grown-up family, work from home, enjoy entertaining or enjoy gardening, there really is something for everyone!

We’ve carefully converted both the Grade II Listed Victorian Methodist Church and the original Sunday School Hall next door - respecting the striking architecture and enhancing the superb features, which have really stood the test of time. Refurbished stained glass, original floorboards and restored stonework all add to the individuality of the homes.

ROMILLY QUARTERThe Romilly Road area where Romilly Quarter is situated is steeped in history, dating back to 1412 when the Romilly family bought large estates in the area. The construction of Barry docks was a time of rapid expansion in Barry, and the Sunday School House was built in 1889 and was used as the church while the main chapel itself was built. 10 years later the impressive Neo gothic Chapel opened.

The Chapel and School House are believed to have been built by the respected civil engineer Thomas A Walker. A man of immense engineering achievement, he also contributed to the development of industry by building the Barry Docks and Railway and The Severn Tunnel.

BARRYThe largest town in the picturesque Vale of Glamorgan, Barry is famous for its splendid beaches and stunning cliff scenery. Located close to many of the historic sites in South Wales, the town is set between sea and country and enjoys panoramic views of the bay.

Just 7 miles south west of Cardiff, the excellent transport links make Barry a favourite place of residence for people who commute to work in Cardiff.

ALL IN THE DETAILPart of the charm of buying a home within an historic building is the history and “story” of the building itself. Each of the houses we have created has their own unique features that retain it’s link with the past, from the exposed ceiling panelling to the classic ceramic tiles and original wooden doors. The magnificent stained glass windows create beautiful coloured light inside the homes, whilst new clear glazed sections allow views out and a connection with the outdoors.

One of the most interesting discoveries during the conversion were the stunning, Art Nouveau style original gas lamps. These have been reimagined for the way we live today - fully refurbished and installed in North Transept and South Transept.

All this detailing has been combined with modern building standards and a contemporary interior to create your “modern home with history”!

BUILT TO STAND THE TESTS OF TIMEAt Brownfield Green we pride ourselves in creating homes that will be as good for generations to come as they are today. We use traditional building methods and high quality materials to set us apart from the competition.

- By using original materials (such as genuine Bath Stone in solid, hand carved pieces, and Welsh slate roof tiles) we can support traditional industries while also updating the building sympathetically.

- We build the new party walls from 2 skins of solid concrete blocks, insulated between, and then wet plastered either side. This gives each house a lot of insulated thermal mass to keep the building warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The chunky walls have the benefit of far out-performing a standard party wall acoustically too.

- We insulate all of the existing external walls, which helps to achieve excellent energy performance. We also insulate all walls, floors and roofs to modern standards. Our developments usually achieve an Energy Performance of B or C, equivalent to a modern new build house.

- We reuse the original floorboards – 100 years old, sanded, varnished and good for another 100 years!

- We create a better base – 300mm deep-engineered joists create a stiffer floor, which is less prone to bounce and sag over time.
