INTHROP 1 – C 37
On My Way HOME
At exactly 4:08 pm of July5, 2011, I rode a “TAS TRANS” bus together with Keith and
Jeliene. We picked that bus, because the driver told us that there are 10 seats left. I noticed that
his facial expression was neither sad nor happy, his face was blank. I was a bit surprised for
seeing that the bus was already full and there were a lot of people inside, some were sleeping,
some were just relaxing their head, leaning in the chair and just looking upward, some were
talking with their seatmate (maybe a friend or a relative), it seems that they were talking about
some serious stuff but some of them are laughing while talking. But the students at the back
captured my attention because they were many; around 5 to 7 students, they were wearing
nursing uniforms and they were having conversations; their voices were loud and they were all
laughing. After that the three of us sat down on the chairs, we were seated in the 4 th seat from
the back. I was the one who sat by the window, next to me was Keith and at the third seat was
Jielene. When I sat down I grabbed my black (Faber Castle) pen and papers for me to write
down my observations. I looked outside and I saw people holding their umbrellas because it
started to rain harder. I saw different colors of umbrellas; pink, blue, and yellow were the
common ones. When I moved my legs to the left it hit something that quickly grabbed my
attention; it was a semi filled drinking water bottle (Summit) and beside it was a wrapper of Sky
Flakes. I also saw some tickets and used tissues on the floor and it was kind of dirty. After that, I
fixed myself and I sat down properly. The color of our seat was blue with some green dots. I
touched the seat cover and it was like a velvet cloth and it was very smooth and soft. I noticed
that there was a green sticker with numbers “9310” on its headboard. I think it is the bus
number. I heard a familiar song and it was coming from the television. It was a music video of
“Go Away by 2NE1”. Suddenly, a lot of people started to appear and because there were no

vacant seats they were just standing. Some of them were wet and there were some were
putting their umbrellas inside their bags. While they were coming in, the conductor shouted
“pasok! pasok!, atras! atras!” . I noticed that, when the people were coming in, their lips were
“super closed” and they have serious facial expressions. I saw a student from St. Scho and she
was kind of familiar, and I finally remembered that she was my schoolmate in high school and
her name is Lotty. She saw me and smiled at me; I smiled back and waved at her. She was
holding her wet (pink) umbrella and she was having a hard time putting it back to normal and
she just decided to put it in the headboard. I noticed that the bus had 1 headboard and it’s only
located on the left side of the bus. The students at the back were really noisy and talking about
stuffs to the point that I can’t understand anything. I can only hear their voices saying “RRRRR”
and “HAHAHA!” it’s like they were so noisy, and they were talking about nonsense and just
laughed. I asked my friends if they can understand what they were talking about and they said
that they can’t understand it too. We also laughed at ourselves because we thought that it was
weird that we can’t figure out what they were saying. I looked at them and checked out what
from school are they. From what I’ve seen, it looks like that they were from UP, because their ID
laces have “UP” printed on it. Some passengers went down, but there were still people coming
in, even though the bus was kind of full and the conductor keeps saying “pasok! pasok!, atras!
atras!”. I was looking at people and tried to stare at them, because I wanted to see their
reactions. There was this guy, a DLSU student and he was wearing glasses, and when I looked
at him he looked at me and instantly looked away and it seems that he became uncomfortable
or maybe he thought that it was kind of weird for me to look at him. Next was, there was this
woman, she looks like she is engaged in a business because she was wearing a pink long
sleeves and black slacks (corporate attire), when I starred at her she didn’t even looked at me.
We’ve reached Baclaran and when we passed by the church, I made the sign of the cross and
the woman who was wearing a corporate attire also made the same action. Then I realized that
the rain had stopped and the people were not using their umbrellas anymore.

I noticed that there was a sticker sign in the roof of the bus that says “Barya lang po sa
umaga - SOGO 175”. When a man from the back, walks forward, the people standing seems
like they’re having a contest, on who will sit on the vacant chair. Ther e was a couple standing
up and the guy’s head bumped the aircon, and he laughed at himself. His girlfriend followed
him and they went down already. Then, 2 women sat on their place. A guy wearing a blue shirt
was wearing red earphones and there was also a girl in front of us wearing the same thing but it
was color pink. The guy wearing a blue shirt and the guy wearing an orange one were talking
about school. It looks like they are friends or classmates. Then I heard the guy wearing blue,
said “ako 11 columns” and the other guy replied “ako 12 columns” I laughed at them
secretly. I saw someone wearing a bonnet, but not quite sure if she is a girl or a boy; lesbian
probably, because she has short hair and was wearing a gray t-shirt and checkered shorts.
When we reached coastal road my friend Jielene, went down the bus and we said “bye
Jeliene, ingat!” and then she waved and smiled on us. When we reached the u-turn slot, all of
the people moved to the right then to the left. The people standing tightened their grip on the
bar and some of them used both their hands to hold on. It was like a roller coaster ride; a
bumpy one indeed.
On the other hand, the people sitting, including me and my friends, hold on to the handle in
front of us. There was this guy, wearing maong pants and a light violet t-shirt; he was sleeping,
he first leaned on the chair then shifted to his bag.Suddenly, I saw a flash of violet light in my
side and a loud sound from the thunder. I noticed that most of the passengers inside the bus
were wearing a watch or a bracelet. Some of the people who were listening to music were
having serious faces. It looks like they have a lot of problems. Even those who were texting,
looks very serious, but there was this girl, who was smiling while she was texting, when I looked
outside, I saw a guy and it seems that he is very tired, because he has a very serious
expressions on his face and it looks like he’s trying his best to not fall asleep. It quite looked
funny, but I understand him, because I am also very tired.

MANALO 4
There was a girl in front of us, a girl sitting on our side, and a guy on our back, who were
sleeping and while we were moving, their heads were following the same direction the bus
does. It was very funny, because it looks like their heads were dancing. The most hilarious one
is that there was this very gorgeous girl wearing make-up, and she was sitting on the seat at my
back. Her mouth was wide open, while she was sleeping; her head leaning on the window, and
her hair was very messy. We finally reached Las Pinas and we are now in Southland. It was
traffic, and I think “ Maynilad” is the one causing it. They were putting new water pipes on the
road and instead having two lanes, they only have one lane for the vehicles to pass, which was
causing the heavy traffic. It was starting to get dark, that’s why the light of the bus was turned
on. There were students, who entered, and a guy wearing headphones said “kind of awkward”,
I think he is gay, because his voice was kind or weird. Due to the traffic outside, I saw an old
man walking with his bicycle, instead of riding it.
Finally, the bus moved, it is now 5pm. I heard the driver saying “sakay na! bahala kayo
uulan na!” . So the people came in and sat down. The driver was saying the truth. Moments
later, it started to rain. A lot of people were looking outside, especially those who were sitting by
the window. Suddenly, I heard a sound of a goat “me….me…” and I think it’s a cellphone
ringtone.
The smell of the bus just like “kulob na aircon” . A ticket inspector came and checked our
tickets. He was wearing a green polo with “TAS Trans” logo. He looked kind of old, maybe
around 40 to 45 years old. Only a few people were left inside the bus, maybe about 8 to 10
people including me and Keith. I noticed that the floor was very dirty. There were a lot of
trashes, especially the bus tickets. All of the passengers were already fixing their things like the
woman wearing a green blouse; she was putting her cellphone inside her purse.
Finally, at exactly 5:24 pm, we’ve reached our destination (PILAR). Me and keith went down,
it smelled very stinky and polluted. Many jeeps, busses, cars, and tricycles were passing by
there were also people who were selling fish and there were a lot of garbage around. As we

walked by the street, I saw an old lady coming out of a parlor, she seems very happy and it
looks like she had a new hair cut because she keeps touching her hair. We also passed by a
bakery, their bread looks so yummy especially those delicious looking cupcakes. Then we went
to the tricycle station, there were no people in the line. Keith said “ikaw na muna” so I
accepted her offer and said “ok sge bye...” I went inside its number was ATODA 378 and the
driver asked “san?” I replied “sa camella po”. I looked outside and said goodbye to Keith. The
tricycle was wide, its chair was made of leader and it was very comfy. The driver was wearing a
white t-shirt, orange vest, brown pants and slippers. I noticed that in his break handle, there was
a pink rosary hanging from it. There was also a sticker of Mama Mary on his mirror. The color
of his motorcycle was red. All of the tricycles in Pilar is color green and the tricycle’s green paint
was already fading. When we’ve reached tha Camella gate, I said to him “kaliwa po”. We
turned left and the “tanod” smiled at me then I smiled back. They were wearing their black
uniform with a yellow “CAMELLA” word in it. They know me, because the head of the security in
our neighborhood is our neighbor and our family friend. At last, we’ve reached our house, so I
said “sa tabi na lang po”. He stopped and I payed him 23 pesos. I said thank you and he
replied thank you as well. I opened our green gate and I opened our screen and finally, my
observation is now over.

My Insights:
I discovered that when you enter the bus, most of the people look at you and you can
notice that some of them have very serious facial expressions. I also observed that when you
look/stare at someone it’s either they will look back at you or they will look away and be
uncomfortable. It also seems that there are times that you can’t understand what other people
are saying and you can hear a lot of weird sounds from them. I think that during the afternoon, a
lot of people sleeps in the bus, and because they are very tired their mouths are usually open
while sleeping and there are also other people who sleep on the shoulders of people they don’t
even know. Sometimes, they don’t even care, what other people would say. Usually, there are a
lot of bus tickets left inside the bus. During my tricycle ride; I noticed that they always put either
a rosary or a picture of Christ / Mama Mary inside their tricycle. It shows that they always pray
that God will guide them while driving.
I learned that each one of us should be careful with our actions, especially when we are
in public places or public vehicles. You don’t know what other people think about you. Always
do your best to not hurt someone even when you’re only making fun of them. You should just
respect and understand them.
